love the picture in the sandy beach setting.........as a long time aviation specialist.......running those engines in that environment.....just would not be such a good idea..........for the machine itself and for the folks getting sand blasted.... looks good on paper. like Padu said they are mini jet engines.......noise will be the immediate detriment. Positives are that yes indeed it is viable and would be a super sick device, we have seen the powered wing suit set ups wih those same type of mini jet engines. Probably would be best suited with some sort of ducted fan/prop propulsion set up , like so many drones are now including all the mil spec type stuff.
  3. FYI for you sandies of course paddles will do you, but you may also consider a less stressful on the drivetrain, smoother running and more diverse terrain sand tire. I have always been partial to the originator of the genre the Pirelli Scorpion MX Soft Sand tire. They revolutionized this type on the deep sand tracks of Europe Michelin Starcross 5 sand tyre: The Michelin Starcross 5 sand tyre is one our favourites! It has specially designed tread with massive scoops, which make hauling through the sand a breeze, plus the tread itself is self-cleaning to release any build-up. One of the key differences in the Michelin sand tyre is the fact the tread is thicker than others on the market, making it more durable while also serving incredibly well in the mud. Dunlop Geomax MX12 sand tyre: The Dunlop Geomax MX12 sand tyre is without a doubt one of the most popular options for motocross riders. The tyre provides exceptional cornering acceleration grip, enhanced handling in ruts and increased bump control. It uses an innovative tread pattern that features V-Block technology for the maximum in traction, plus it utilises Dunlop's unique Progressive Cornering Block Technology (PCBT). Bridgestone Battlecross X12 sand tyre: Designed specifically for muddy and sandy conditions, the Bridgestone Battlecross X12 is optimised for greater stability when braking and cornering, yet is designed with exceptional block rigidity for excellent traction when the soil is deep. Pirelli Scorpion MX Soft sand tyre: The Pirelli Scorpion MX Soft is the original 'scoop' sand tyre, revolutionising dirt bike sand tyres across the market. The Scorpion MX Soft has been designed with the input of MXGP riders, and it boasts reinforced edge blocks and centre paddle for an improved drive, edge traction and increased longevity in soft conditions. Mitas Terra Force MX sand tyre: Considered a hybrid 'sand tyre', the Mitas Terra Force MX uses a semi-paddle construction and wide row spacing ensure maximum clearing and traction in stickiest mud or deepest sand.

Hand grips ready to install. waiting for throttle tube. * on the garage shelf stuff, new Rear Shinko 216MX that I wasn't going to use on the other bikes , slightly used front Michelin Enduro Medium and all sorts of scrap mousses whole and pieces to stuff

Nico's stories: Azzalin's Cagiva at the Dakar - MotoFestival - Moto.it In Italian for non speakers...just watch the views are super cool. And yes those machines are all in the Roberto Azzalin collection. Roberto's Son Fabrizio has been manager of many world enduro championship CH Racing Team Husky wins and now has some wins as the Sherco world enduro team boss. KTM dropped him when they bought the Husky brand from the Varese Italians.

KTM = Zero dealer support ( KTM/Husqvarna/Gas Gas) I disagree with this, any dealer (GP Moto Forza etc.) or independent service center will gladly service or troubleshoot your bike ($$$).......but, you may have 30 bikes in front of that line... I just think the mindset is that most owners feel they are capable of the standard maintenance jobs. Notice I've used the term "feel", because I've seen the level of what many feel is proper mechanical work .......from electrical systems to mechanical systems on subject machines from all manufacturers. (the not so good list is very long). I digressed from the thread. The desert X is cool and is the DNA tree spawn of the "Elefant" Dakar and other rally bikes of the late 80s and 90s. I know a couple of guys that rode/raced those beasts, they would most likely smile at how refined (and light) the Desert-X is in comparison. CAGIVA ELEFANT IN THE ROOM! - Australian Motorcycle News (amcn.com.au) In the racer photo I fortunately know both Davide (2nd from left) and Danny (4th from left)...Robertaccio's name drop for the day. If Padu is up for it..maybe we can set a Danny photo sesh.....I wonder if he still has his Rally kit. That would be a super cool story. My crazy mind is working.....on a scheme.

Update photos, moving along well now. replacement chassis painted and installed engine (after bigtime clean up). Front end is installed , seat in work. had to install the fender just to make me feel good (still need fender bushings-on the way). Decided to leave the boots on , but have the OEM type open plastic fork guards as well. PS the boots are OEM catalog Marzocchi fork boots. Lubed most of linkage , will finish when I pull the wheels for tire installation. Offers anyone????(hahahaha). National City Motorcycles is my go to place for parts and logistics .

New used set for RH Radiator on the way as well as a set of SX coolant hoses (no thermostat). I have always removed T-stats from my racing enduro/dirt bikes, for me it's just another potential failure item. Less is more for offroad. New bars are Moose brand Nekken very nice! All controls will remain as they are, there is MS "easy" clutch. never a fan of anything other than OEM all else is OEM. Coolant will be my standard Evans Non-aqueous, bullet proof stuff. Gearbox oil will be RedLine 80w , this stuff is magic. Mix will be EU standard 2% (50:1) with what I have on hand, Motorex or Maxima. Plug will be B8EIX iridium. Jetset will be OEM or FMF spec . I am not changing the OEM pipe and silencer which would drop a huge weight off the back, yet anyway. Don't want to get too spendy here. So for potential buyers I will recommend at least a silencer the OEM one is a bazooka and super heavy.(it may happen as I go into final assembly there are good FMF Turbinecore choices on ebay)

    1997 KTM300EXC (overlap project)

silly me I never shot the before shots....... anyway I pressure washed , after making her a temp roller, and the teardown is flowing. My hold up is no frame paint for the new frame!!! I had to order what appears to be a good match-Krylon Metallic gray metal (something like that). BTW brake clean washes off Ohlins lable graphics... Ebay has Ohlins replica stickers.. So not going too deep, but, new plastics full enduro look with head and taillight set up, graphics, new seat, new bars, tires with mousses (full FIM set up), new used RH radiator, B8EIX iridium plug, new Twinair filter, and more OEM stuff gaskets for remove and inspect of covered insides. Maybe a new pipe (OEM one is badly dinged and twisted) . Worst discovery Ignition box is cracked do to lack of steer stop clearance.......simple but a known issue from the time period....owners not paying enough attention to detail. Hopefully the electronics are not compromised.

EBay and the mighty Taffmeisters in the UK for all sorts of stuff as well as full email tech dialogue . Lots of parts around. typically they did not change much for the entire decade . I have brought in the engine stand to my sponsor shop NCM.net and my chassis is getting closer for assembly. bits and bits. https://www.taffmeisters.co.uk/index.php?cPath=232

    Noob trailer question

the chocks I used were the cheapo steel tube type, I chose the wider type to fit an 18' rear width in case of rear wheel in position.

    Noob trailer question

just to add more food for thought. For years I had a home custom built cheap PRC foldable type 4x8 red trailer you get at harbor freight. I painted it to match my tow vehicle so it looked cool behind my van and made it into a fixed trailer with a 3/4 4x8 plywood top, which added alot of stiffness to the entire framework , added a nice trailer lighting kit with side lites etc, added strategically mounted moto wheel chocks , loop bolts for tie downs, built low side fence type walls and permanently attached them (stained nicely), added a frame onto the tongue section for a gas jug mount, added a set of larger diameter wheels to it as well . So the option exists with a little custom home build work to create a long-lasting inexpensive decent trailer from a (very) inexpensive folding or other simple trailer, and I finished it with a couple of cool sponsor stickers. Had some hours in it and no more than 400 bucks I would say for the trailer and all the add on custom bits. Normally it was a 2 bike facing forward in the chocks set up , but sometimes I would have 1 facing aft for carrying 3, I had and extra chock with holes already in the floor to do a quick mount for the rear facing machine. The 2 on the side I would simply strap them angled leaning out, easy peasy , 3 full sized dirt bikes, never an issue. License plate was on the back removable fence so it would never drag in the stock behind the tire position. ( no lite but never had an issue). Also as my fender mounts cracked I just removed the fenders again never an issue.

    Hand wringing over hand guards

Note for acerbis most have little cut outs to use a zip tie as a strengthening loop, hard to explain I will see if I can snap a shot of TE610 for what I am talking about. Just that zip tie loop holds the flag in place when hitting lite stuff.
  22. Met Danny at the 1994 baja 1000 at the Team Green pre-running pits south of Mexicali maybe even in or near San Filipe, I can't recall, exactly. I was with Team Green B team racer and friend Davide Trolli. Danny's pre-runner was a KX250 that was hammered from him and his big self, abusing the thing for course sighting. Rims were all dented and everything was just hard run. He and the A team went on to win that year's B1K Mexicali to Mexicali route. The guy just put out Mr. Nice guy vibes, he was a true gentleman racer and as we know fierce on a bike. As ISDE97 said he was also brilliantly fast in tight enduro stuff as well and always showed well in Tecate and other national enduros as well as ISDE comp. On a side note, my friend "Dave" told me that he and Danny had more than once discussed the serious danger of their open course racing profession and directly about certain sections of the Baja Mexico courses. From what i understood/recall now one of the sections they discussed the following year was the area near Ensenada where he lost his life. Davide retired from open course high speed rally type stuff soon after, he lost many of his friends and peers in this, the most dangerous of 2 wheeled sports (rally/High Speed open course racing). If you check the rally list of losses, he knew all those guys from mostly previous enduro comp years as well as the rally scene and was very close friends with Cavandoli who was killed in '94 in Tunisia. Brutal game. Raise a toast to DH and salute the many pilots that have been killed, especially in the high speed offroad world. The list is long and filled with world class level racers. And if you have not watched grainy 1990s viddys of Danny in the Dez...... he was quite a phenom, riding a KX500 like a KX125......very impressive.
