    Jay, save the chain for last. Of course because you need to put the new rear sprocket on and you might as well change the tire while the wheel is off. Your chain is a O-Ring chain and I ordered to the specs on links, you may need to come be the shop and use the press tool on the master link to get the clip on. Kelly

    When I had my DRZ I had it on the tender all the time. The big o speedo-clock on that thing would drain the battery fast. I have a tender I rotate between the Harley and the RV all the time, them pesky little power parasites from the clocks and stuff give them a slow drain. I have the pig tails on them all so switching the tender is easy.

    For you folks that have been ripping up the new Pala track but have never been in a real race. Check out the modern support class at CALVMX. The track is really tone down for the vintage bikes but the modern bikes are having a blast. Its a good way to get you feet wet and see what its like to be on the line with twenty other bikes waiting for the gate to drop. Nice big table tops, big berm corners. You don't need to be a club member to race either, but if you like it support the club its only $35 a year and they have there own private practice track opened 7 days a week. Check it out.

    Yesterdays race at Perris Raceway had almost 200 entry's. Personal note: my daughter beat the boys in the 100cc vintage novice class.

    Last summer in Yellowstone my wife left me and the boys to go for a walk with the dogs and when she came back she found us up on the roof of the trailer with lounge chairs watching all that summer lightning. Awsome show. She was not happy. :angry:

    Hey Ken hi, thats a really cool bike I got to ride in that event. That is really a actual 1 of 2 Hodaka prototype bikes that Hodaka was thinking about selling. It's called the Bullfrog and is owned by Ed Chestnut who work for Hodaka and he still competes on that bike in vintage trials. Building Hodaka trials bike have become very popular in the last few years to compete in the vintage trials events. I'm currently working on one of my own. Check it out. Its a 125 cc with frame mods like de raking the front steering, a boxed swenco swing arm that was the hot ticket in the 70s, Bultaco forks, Honda hubs mounted to Akront rims from the 70s, custom hand made tank, pipe and air box, and a special weighted clutch and flywheel.

    I bought a TW for my wife and it was great for her, the low seat height and push button start. The wide tires I feel didn't make a big difference in the sand, it would walk all over just like one of our bigger DS bikes and trying to get that faster is better in the sand was a hard one for her. I still think its still a fun little bike and for her also. Kelly

    Yesterday I met a great guy Ken "aka" Trophyhunter at his house. I looked over his bikes and we traded a few stories while the kids played. He showed me his cool little find of a TTR90 that needs some top end work, this will be a get little bike for his little girl. Last season my little guy who will be 5 in July rode his first motorized machine, a borrowed little Kawasaki 50 quad. Well it was my lucky day, on the way home from Ken's house I stopped by a garage sale a couple blocks from my house. In the garage was a little Suzuki 50 Quad and a Polini Racer, I ask what he was going to do with the Quad? His answer was " I will let you have it all for $600 plus all the gear for two kids" and if I didn't take it it would go on Craigslist for $1000

    I found that when I had my DRZ the front end was all over. It took a lot more body English in turns and sand as well as tight stuff. So stay loose. I also experienced some big changes with proper sag adjustment, I was really amazed at how much 1 inch made a difference in steering. Look ahead also and be loose. And Ride as much as you can.

    My ride started on Friday, my plan was to go a couple hundred miles to the El Mirage Dry Lake near Adelanto. The event is hosted by the Southern California Timing Association for vehicles trying to set land speed records.

    The lake bed is over 6 miles across, as I took my 800lb beast on the cracked surface I couldn't help but to take it up to around 60 mph and that was enough thrill.

    After finding my friends and getting camp set up it was time to get the bike tech. Now this is no easy thing because they check and double check by two different tech inspectors.

    Now the leathers didn't pass because they had non leather panels in the arm and leg area.

    Lucky for us we were able to borrow a set from someone for the event. Here is a contrast of power.

    And a look at some of the other type of bikes, from street class to stream liners. I never had a chance to make it over to the car area and with plenty to look at over there. Here is a good photo of how big of an event this was.

    So the goal of 100mph didn't get met, its a big learning curve and getting the little 100cc into the 70s with a head wind wasn't to bad. My friend Brain was at the event all weekend and shot this photo of the little 100 crossing the dry lake

    I had to get back on the road Saturday morning early because I had a bit over 500 miles to get to Marysville. My sister lives out on 20 acres in the cattle country. I was picking up a new camera from there Camera Store. I didn't take any photos on this leg, nothing but freeway and a heat wave in the high 90s. After a overnight visit I took off east to the 395 by way of South Lake Tahoe. The weather was great and plenty of bikes on the road.

    After talking to this group coming from the other direction I received a tip on a good burger joint in the upcoming town of Walker. Looks like a nice little place with plenty of bikes out front.

    Just right 1/4 pound and fry's. Talk with a few other bikers and on to Bishop for a overnight break. Just a bit over 300 miles and I'm ready for a break at Browns Camp. After setting up camp I bought a great roast beef sandwich and a few beers from the camp store and kicked back to enjoy.

    Monday I was out of town by 8:30am after a breakfast at Denny's and home at about 1pm. I feels good to get away, total ride wa a little over 1000 mile for the 4 days with no issues.

    That's a mighty teeny rear sprocket on that bike. No wonder it wouldn't get out of third. :ph34r: Are you allowed to make any kind of a fairing to run on the machine?

    They have many classes and rules. I think the class they run is for stock like set up, frame must be stock and no fairing. I think the sprocket will be fine, the issue they had last year was not a gearing problem I think.

    Next weekend I will be checking out the Land Speed runs at El Mirage Dry Lake. I have never been to one of these events so it should be very cool with the hope of going to Bonneville later this year. Info on the event is here.

    I will be there to support a team of Hodaka Club members trying to top 100mph and a 100cc bike. Last year they ran in the hi 70 mph but could not get the bike out of 3rd gear. The bike has been improved on so I hope the do it.

    My daughter and I went to Barona yesterday a had one of the best times at a race track. Not because she won because she didn't but the new format and new facility. From what I know is that the guy that use to run the MX track in El Cajon is now running Barona Oaks. Nice layout, camping, snack bar and no porta potties but real bathrooms.

    Now for Calvmx, if you ever thought about trying MX this would be the place. They now have a modern support class and you ride on a fun track that has no doubles and triples or long sections of 3 ft whoops but does have nice table top style jumps and big berm corners. So what I like about it is unless I do something really dumb I will make it to work on Monday.

    And the Women, you can ride anything vintage or modern and size. Now this was not so hot for my daughter Kaylie cause she likes to ride the vintage bike so she was middle of the pack yesterday. Here goal now is not just to grab her 03 YZ but to get better and try to beat some of them girls on her vintage 100cc.

    In the modern support class I saw two DS bikes with plates still on. The other cool thing about CALVMX is they now have there own practice track in Jamul with water, shade and RV storage if you are a club member for 35 bucks.

    They have Youth classes also 15 and under

    Right now I'm going though the process of giving the bike the best one over that I can do. Oil and filter change using paper filter and Amsoil. I would like to have the valves check and check on the upgraded cam sprocket and bolt. So here is a couple questions and I know asking stuff like this is touchy with everyone's own opinion. I need new tires so at the same time I will check wheel bearings and the chain adjustment bolts. I read over a past tire posting but it was from awhile back so maybe things have changed.

    I'm thinking DOT tires. Metzeler Six Days, sizes offered are kind of weird I think? 90/90-21 and 110/100-18 $71F$80R, Kenda Trak Master II 80/100-21 and 110/100-18 $47F$56R or Dunlop 606 90/90-21 and 130/90-18 $92F$99R.

    The bike has no speedo so I'm looking at the Trail Tech Vector $80

    I did order a seat from Guts.

    Forrest welcome, I used to ride almost everyday in that Black Mountain area when I was a kid. We live right on the canyon right above what is now Penasquitos preserve, we made a trail right down the side of the hill from our house to go riding. I was 13 and I'm still riding with the same friends I rode with then. That was a very cool time and place to grown up liking motorcycles in 1971.
