  1. So I lied. I promised to post pictures, i.e., plural. Here is the only picture from today's trip. The gates of the Cahuilla motocross track near Anza, inside a drizzly cloud, bundled for the 42F weather, and looking very Japanese (Turning Japanese [Official video] - The Vapors (HD/HQ) - YouTube). [Kids, don't judge people who came of age in the '80s. Just be jealous that you weren't there.] From Anza we made an attempt towards Red Mountain Lookout. On account of poor planning, poor execution, and even poorer GPS, we only rode around aimlessly on some sand roads for a little while. I won't say today was my best day in the saddle, but the worst day riding is still better than the best day working. Forecast says more rain tomorrow than today. Going to spend some time this evening to see if running to Pioneer Town tomorrow is doable. Even better.
  2. Well, they do call it adventure riding after all. Plan . . . no plan . . . will be an adventure either way. Sort of a deviation from the 7Ps of the Navy though : ) Just noticed you have a YT channel in your tag. Great content from what I've seen and pretty mug as well. You described yourself as an air marshal on a helo carrier. CWO4? LCDR?
  3. Thanks for the additional input. So, attending tntmo’s Otay Truck Trail ride looks like a no go. I’ll put this diplomatically because it’s OK to throw your best friend under the bus. While I would ride all night through the rain to attend if I were solo, my friend is currently cycling through a phase where he cannot think or talk about anything that is not the object of his present obsession. We’re leaving Sunday to ride for couple of days and that plan is still a pretty blank sheet of paper. My buddy is 100% focused on the SX event. As far as riding I now know what it means to ride out the divide. Local news says the snow line is around 2,500 feet. Does anyone have an opinion on whether Forest Route 4S05, Rouse Hill Truck Trail, and Red Mountain area are still ridable? Lots of snow on the mountains to the East of Riverside today. However this turns out I promise to post up some pics. On a positive note I bought a new dirt bike helmet and goggles at Chaparral today. Also looking forward to riding an F850 for the first time.

    ADV Tire Review

RallZ. Sorry for not including that. Darn tootin'. I don't have any experience with Shinko's on an ADV bike but I got three (short) seasons out of Shinko's on a 450 trail riding in AK. I thought I was doomed when I went to a local motorcycle shop to get another set of Dunlops and all they had in stock were these weird knock-off looking Shinko dirt bike tires. Would totally buy them again. The Shinko tire (don't recall the model) are to the MX31 what the 952s were to MX51s. Not quite as good traction but last way longer.

Otay Truck Trail / Pink Gate Ride - Noob Friendly

In a stroke of dumb luck I now notice that tntmo is the sherpa for the Otay Truck Trail trip. As I alluded to in another thread, I will work to get my buddy around to the idea of making a day trip out of this. Would love to meet you and whoever else attends.
  6. Shutterrev and tntmo, thank you so much for the info and feedback. That pin map is an absolute gold mine. The Otay ride is also a definite maybe if we can put together a couple of good detours on the way back North to make a day out of it. Doesn't look like that would be hard to do either. I'm meeting my riding buddy this evening to open a discussion about ride planning. Because we are both pretty low key, easy going guys (not anal retentive) decisions won't be made right away. I just want to see some new country and hopefully meet any local riders. My friend on the other hand has a quirk. He's generally against something until he feels that the plan is, at least in part, his idea, then he's all in. He's also the other half of the partnership so I often defer to his suggestions. I bought bourbon for the occasion and should have a better sense of what's afoot tomorrow. Bikes are booked.
  7. Two dummies from AK are coming down to your neck of the woods and carved out a couple days to ride. I'm as lost about the territory as a gringo negotiating the price of a silver necklace in a Tijuana marketplace. We'll be on ADV bikes and are mostly interested in just seeing some new country and being away from snow. Just want to stand on the pegs do some easy to intermediate gravel roads. Also, we're based out of LA so SD isn't precisely local. Ride ideas?

    ADV Tire Review

I realize that I am necro-posting a 2018 thread, but tires are important. After running many sets of TKC80s front and back, because nothing is better than knobbies offroad, I've found the best compliment for me is a K60 rear and a tractionator front tire. The K60 is easily at 10K+ tire and the tractionator far out lives the TKC80 as a front. To each their own.

    Greetings from Alaska.

Glad you enjoyed your trip. For six months out of the year Alaska is the most beautiful place on Earth. I will now, with knowledge aforehand and malice in my heart, break your admin rule against posting memes. Because this is how I must present a response to your comment about riding 3,900 miles in Alaska . . .

    Ducati Desert X Review

Love that other manufacturers such as Ducati and Aprilla are getting into the ADV game. Some competition is good, more competition is better. And the middle class AVD bike segment is currently awash with good ride options. In terms of dirt bikes I'm also hopeful that Triumph's 450F will be a worthy offering as well. To take nothing away from older bikes, we are currently in a renaissance of motorcycle offerings. Yes, some are very pricey, and not everyone has the disposable income to put down ~15K on a hobby. My last 450F was an '07 purchased off craigslist or $2,700 and I beat the "war pig" like rented mule. A friend known to me as "The Magnificently Beautiful Hobbit" owns an Elefant as well. Fantastic motorcycle. He also likes beer and 80's rock.

For sure. I've barely scratched the surface of the knowledge on here and already have several promising ideas.

    Greetings from Alaska.

Wasn't you then. This group definitely had a third guy driving a truck & trailer. Same trip though. Been to Dawson many times but the Dempster is still on the to-do list. Hopefully Canada will loosen their border restrictions soon. And blown fork seals on a Honda Twin is basically standard operating condition. I've done mine three times and the bike only has 28K. I spent six months on Coronado failing out of a Winter BUD/S class. Ended up on logistics ship stationed out of Goose Creek, SC. How about yourself? What can you do at one place for 25+ years and not move - medical field?

    Greetings from Alaska.

Don't under-sell your AK trip. Getting to Tuk and the rest is a full-blown gold star, blue ribbon memory. Hand salute for your service as well. Any chance this was in or around 2018 and your Honda buddy's fork seals blew out? Maybe stayed in Smithers, BC, on the way back? Had a support vehicle? Ps. Edited for poor splelling and grammerz.

    Greetings from Alaska.

Thanks for the suggestion. Thanks for your suggestion as well. I will definitely look into both. Appreciate the service of your family members. My only connection to San Diego is being stationed there in the 90s with the Navy. What bike did you ride to AK? Solo or group? Cassiar? Dawson? A lot of riders have Alaska as a bucket list destination. For Alaskan riders it's kinda reverse. Top of my list right now would probably be Utah BDR which is pretty accessible for anyone living in the States.
