  1. Take a look at this article...it sounds WAY to cool to be true. I want one!!! It's a few years away, but it could add a whole new dimension to "off road" or "dual sport" riding... It might be a pain to get through the ad's - but it's a fun read https://robbreport.com/motors/aviation/jetpack-aviation-air-motorcycle-certified-two-years-1234790824/

    Jetsons meet flying motorcycle

@padu & @robertaccio you're looking at the technical, logical side of it, which I believe you are totally correct. It'll be unattainable for most of us with the cost of the unit and the maintenance. I just brought it up for FUN factor, I think it would be cool and add a whole new type of Adventure Touring. It'd make you feel like a Eagle flying around.

    Teardrop Trailer

@DSM8 ah-ha...thanks for the enlightenment...drop down from the side. My mind went to a toy hauler with a bed that drops down from the ceiling, above where the toy is stored. I like the one in the link MUCH more. That's more of what's rattling around in my head.

    Teardrop Trailer

From the link, it looks like you're searching Utility Trailers, but from your description, it sounds like a Toy Hauler, especially with the drop down bed (it's a space saver). If I buy new - I'm thinking...utility trailer, 6 or 7' wide, 7' tall and 12' long. V nose for sure, going back and forth on the tandem axel. If I buy used...I'll have to see what's out there. Ramp door vs Barn door. As far as the rear door, with your space at home, it doesn't matter for you. I was looking at a ramp door, easier to load/unload. But at home, I have limited space to park it, I think barn doors will work better for me. I'll just need to bring a ramp with me. If I park it at a storage yard, then ramp door. If I keep it at my house, I might use the trailer to store a bike or two - the barn door will allow me to get a bike in and out without having to move the trailer.

    Teardrop Trailer

@DSM8 I'm looking getting a trailer also. However, I was thinking Utility trailer. I recently took a small utility trailer 5x8 on a 2 week trip. Found things I liked and didn't like with it. I'm going to use that trip as guide for the one I get. I want to haul a bike (maybe 2) and be able to sleep in it (if need be). If you move forward with building one, I'd be interested in learning how you go about it and what you're going to put in it.

    Merry Christmas

I want to wish everyone at San Diego Adventure Riders a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!! I hope 2023 is your best year yet. Especially the one's I've been lucky enough to personally meet. I'm thankful that I've been able to meet so many great people in the short time I've been on the site. I've found everyone very welcoming and supportive. Many giving their time, whether at a Tech Days, putting together a Noob camping trip or different people taking me on rides at a pace/level that I didn't stress the whole ride, people willing to share their bike so you can try out different kinds/styles. Everyones willing to share their knowledge and experience with you. Have a good one all - Merry Christmas
  7. @Goofy Footer you hit the nail on the head...I was thinking that exact thought - get out of the house and be with like minded people and hopefully learn a few things. We need to talk about this - give me a call sometime soon. I have a story about Panamint Springs Resort...from many years back, I think it's funny, my wife...not so much. I had a blast - but paid the price the next morning...
  8. I'd like to attend...however, it might have to be next year. I think I might still be on the mend come March. I'll know more very soon.

    DR650 Lost and Found Video

@Goofy Footer - your right...freedom at it's finest. Plus, LOVE the opening soundtrack - ya got to love Steppenwolf!!!
  10. Loved it...just Run what you Brung...no times, just win or lose - hard to get more pure then that
  11. Welcome. I'm new to ADV/Dual Sport also. Hope to see ya out there.
  12. @Goofy Footer not a fair comparison...didn't try them under the same conditions. The DRZ was a blast to ride, felt very comfortable - it may sound funny, but I could feel it between my legs when standing. But, the KTM was way skinner, I didn't feel it. For the good riders it may not matter - because they just flick the bike towards where they want it to go. But, I want to grip the bike. I can say, the KTM was lighter and had a better rear brake feel. The XR650L that I rode was a 1996 and it felt comfortable but it was street riding. So it's not fair to compare them based on that. However, I did ride with @350thumper once and his XR650L was impressive with the ease the bike moved around in the sand and in fact on the whole ride. But that was me watching him ahead of me.
  13. @DSM8 - already have it covered. Already been in touch with him.
  14. @moto_rph Thanks for putting this on. I totally enjoyed it. The trail you picked was perfect, I didn't have to fight the trail, just ride the bikes and get a feel for them. I can't tell you and Dave, @ECDave how much I appreciate you two letting me try out your bikes. It gave me a different prospective on tires/weight/suspension. Another bonus for me - was the debriefing with you and Dave about what I liked and how the two bikes felt different from each other. That is going to be helpful in my search for a bike. So, I guess I should be mad at you two, because now I'm going to have to spend a ton of money on suspension - already talked with them and got a price. I have tires, just need to get them put on. Perry...What do you mean 2 credit cards - it was clearly 5 or 6! Man, I get NO Respect!!!
  15. @padu Thanks for posting the video, I enjoyed it...looks like a day well spent. I've gone to a couple of classes with Edger and looking to go again.
  16. @cmbthumper that's some shopping list, reads like a who's who... I guess I should hide my Tenere 700.🀣 Me, I'd like a 1958 HD Panhead or a 1976 HD Shovelhead. But, I'd love to throw a leg over @tntmo 1951 Vincent Black Shadow for a ride, I was able to sit on one, but didn't get to ride it.
  17. Point of View from a NEW rider in the ADV world...I like the idea of some sort of scale of difficulty. When I see a ride posted, I'm looking/hoping someone puts in Noob or Beginner friendly, then I know it's something that I might be interested in. The Rating system is not going to be perfect (especially at first). But as @robertaccio stated, as a consistent rating system moves down the line - it'll get more refined and accurate due to input from the people on the ride. I agree with @DSM8 on it starting out with 2 categories - if down the road it needs to be redefined, then so be it. ADV BIKE and Dual Sport (dirt bike lumps into Dual Sport) This way anything that is low scale on Dual Sport would be easier on dirt bike I like the way @Zubb breaks it down, this 1, 2 and 3 rating, would work for each category. For me, being a Noob, I know I'm good with ADV #1, on rating #2 I would ask questions to see if I could make it or not, and with a #3 rating - I'm waiting for the Ride Report to come out (hopefully with photo's or video) Noob = brand new to riding moto 1= comfortable with road riding, have a very basic understanding of trail riding techniques 2= confident in gravel, sand, embedded rock, water and hills. Proficient at peg (enduro) steering and tipping the bike under you. 3= oh sh*t! Can I just have Chris Birch ride my bike out for me? Having some mastery of the clutch, brakes, throttle to find and keep traction in unusually challenging conditions.
  18. I plan on being there. Dunkin Donuts on Sunday morning at "O" dark thirty - I mean 8:30 in the AM
  19. @Sneeker that never occurred to me about the forearm moving and exposing my arm...Great point. If/when I move up, I'm defiantly going to look for the thumb holes. In the meantime, looks like I'll take it to the seamstress (wife) and see if she can fix something up to prevent the movement.

    Is Buell back??

Wonder what the boys at KTM are doing - Laughing or have an eye raised with concern. Time will tell. I'd like to know how much input Eric Buell (if any) had in the design. I might be mistaken, but one iteration of a Buell come back was with the purchase of the name "Buell" and Eric Buell didn't have anything to do with the company. Is that the case here...
  21. This is from a Noob...so I don't know if I have the correct experience to comment on this subject, but here goes: I wanted protection as I am new to the sport of ADV - I purchased a Klim Carlsbad Jacket and Pants. I felt it has great protection (even tested it a couple of times). However as others have stated above, it got WAY too hot. But I wanted the protection and it was all I had, so on it went. The search was on - I saw all the stuff listed above Alpinestars, Leatt, Fox, etc. My head was spinning didn't have the experience to make a good choice, so I rolled the dice I purchased the Moose Racing XC1 Body Armor, my thought was try this $100 item and see how it works before spending $350-400, plus the armor rating in the Moose was higher then some of the others. Turns out, it's comfortable, they say as your body warms the armor molds to that area - seemed to work. As far a the protection working, unfortunately I tested it a couple of times and I didn't get hurt. But then again, I don't fly down the road/trail - I'm slow. Also, no side rib protection. It's kind of strange to put on because of the zipper is at an angle, but it feels fine once on. As far as the Stank factor - I have not worn it multiple day, however it is a mesh shirt. https://www.revzilla.com/dirt-bike/moose-racing-xc1-body-armor?sku_id=1151730 - it's on Close Out because of an updated version (didn't see the updated one at Revzilla) https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/riding-gear/moose-racing-xc1-guard-jersey-p - they say they vented the armor better to help with airflow - also went up by $10

    New Rider

Welcome. You find the people here very friendly.
  23. @350thumper - couldn't have stated it better...you hit the nail on the head. Best of all, they let a HD guy tag along.
  24. Had a great day today...good getting out and meeting a couple of new people. We must have looked like a eclectic group of bikes going down the road.
