  1. Recovery vehicles are the “Best”. we do tours both with and without a chase truck. Small groups do not have the funds to pay for a chase vehicle. Truck/ gas / driver/ food- lodging. Think about it. What does that cost? small groups may opt to go without the truck based on $$. Having a truck solves a LOT of trouble. I’ve run many tours with both methods. Of course having a truck is best. And price reflects that. When we need a truck and don’t have one …. There are other options that come into play.
  2. No , wasn’t talking TVIP. Was mentioning tip. Like tip your waiter.
  3. Dang! I was thinking of driving wife and dog to borrego tomorrow anyway. If I can talk Barb into it (the dog has already said yes) I'll hit the tower at around 11 or 12 for tacos. Thanks for sharing!
  4. Watching this I was concerned about them not isolating the head neck and spine. Method of injury would indicate that he could easily have spinal damage. Then we find that he had a compression fracture to C7. No surprise really. The protocol we used in Patrol would have been to completely stabilize/immobilize the head/neck IN the helmet until more was known. NEVER EVER remove a victim's helmet unless you are certified in helmet removal. Yes It is a thing with a very specific process and it takes 2 people who know exactly what they are doing. This is not meant as a criticism of how they managed the scene, it is meant as a public service announcement to my fellow riders here.
  5. Comments overheard... "The lights are on but nobody's home" "The hamsters running the wheel but nothing else is happening" One thing they could have done to secure the scene is to park several bikes across the trail to force traffic away. In ski patrol we would cross a pair of skis into a big letter X above the victim to keep skiers/boarders from plowing into and through the crash scene.
  6. Speaking of first aid . . . . Start at about 10:40mins.
  7. I’ve never been hit up for a tip in Mexicali or TJ. Only Tecate.
  8. 1. Ride across the border (green arrow) 2. Turn left and park under the roof on your left side of the road (yellow circle) 3. Leave one person with the bikes and walk back to the red circle building and get your FMM. You’ll get pimped for a tip. Follow your conscience. Personally I don’t tip government officials. 4. first rider to get through goes back and relieves the rider guarding the bikes.

That'll learn ya to not stay in igloos! I actually did that a few times with the boy scouts. Never got wet though.

    Sleeping bag or blanket?

Funny thing is my wife gets panicked when she see's I've turned the thermostat up to 67. She will see it on her phone at work and turn it back down to 62*!!!! She is pretty peeved at Gas rates!
  11. It's time for a refresher for me. I took the survey. No link there to actually get signed up though. Hope they reply with registration info. $25 for certification and lunch .... sounds like a fun day when you add the ride up and back.

    Sleeping bag or blanket?

I switched to high loft (750-800) down quite awhile ago for several reasons. Warmth to weight ratio. pack size is the biggest reason, cost per use equation .... I use it a minimum of 25 nights/year, sometimes double that. So whatever the cost difference is doesn't matter. WAIT, I forgot. All my older synthetic bags lose loft so I end up eventually replacing them. But I have a 20*/600 fill down bag (marmot) that I bought 40 (yes) years ago and it's still in perfect condition except for a few stains on the shell. I think I paid about $350 for it and it almost got me divorced over the exorbitant price. The only reason I replaced it 3 years ago was my new bag was 850 fill. So it packed about 40% smaller which opens up a seemingly immense about of space in my kit. But what if it gets wet???????????????????? I've been camping all over the country, with about 60% of that in the Pacific North We(s)t, and have never once in 50 years had a bag get wet. It's my opinion that if your getting your bag wet, you're just flat out doing it wrong. I can help newbs with that if they have questions. The Marmot does pack small by todays standards. But I've got to considerable expense the last few years to replace almost my whole kit with the smallest and lightest gear available. This allows me to carry my camping gear & clothing in just one leg of the R80. That's probably TMI.
  13. I’m in Idaho then. Have fun (again).
  14. For what it’s worth, my passport card works fine for FMM at TJ, Tecate and Mexicali. I never go south through Otay. Only north.
  15. Not exactly. It was up the trail a ways late in a long day at high speed. I was racing the sun with a good 40-50 miles of trail ahead. If I get a chance in the next few days I’ll see if I can determine it.

    Sleeping bag or blanket?

Question is how and where and when do you camp!Yep. I have a 30* down. But I sleep cold. So a couple times at 10,000 feet it wasn’t enough even with my down jacket on. I found a 20* down that compresses as small as the 30. So I don’t think I’ll ever use the30 again. remember, I zip the bag open and use it as a blanket 90% of the time.
  17. I’ve used my passport card exclusively for several years. Never had a question about it when getting my FMM’s. No need to bring the passport book.

    Sleeping bag or blanket?

For the last 3 years I’ve been running a goose down 30* mummy. I use it in the desert and in the Colorado high country. I almost always zip it open and drape it over me as a blanket, with my (always cold) feet in the foot box. It’s a wonderful blanket with a huge temp range as I can easily kick a leg out or arm or more. Easy to roll over and get out to pee. When on rare occasion it gets too cold, I just zip it up and close the hood tight around my head and neck, like ‘normal’. packs down tiny in a compression sack. Works for temps down to freezing. And below if I put on some of my clothing. sell or donate most of your bags. Get out the visa and buy a quality $350 bag and a small compression sack. Done. or come over and look at a couple I have. I’d probably make you a sweet deal on one if you wanted.

    Radios to Sena hookup

Yeh that will be sweet. I don’t mind keying the mic as much as I hate trying to hear/understand what was said.

    Big bike capabilities

Everyone tends to have their own ideas about what makes a good bike. Our perceptions about what's the right machine for "us" are extremely individualized and almost always shaped by our enthusiasm for a brand, a slogan, a personality, style, etc. I loved this video. Yes, it shows a lot of fast, capable riding on the type of trails that I gravitate to. But Arie talks a bit about the capabilities of the bike and what it offers. He makes some great comments at around 24 mins in, and also at the closing ceremony. No glorification of the brand. No whining about weight or suspension or <insert complaint here>. Just 5 awesome days wailing on a great machine and enjoying the camaraderie on the trail and terrain. Good stuff. Enjoy.

    Big bike capabilities

I don’t know. But a friend of mine saw this bike get pulled down, started up and rode out like it was nothing.

    Big bike capabilities

I’m 100% with you on that. However the point being the bike is 100% capable of being ridden aggressively on ADV bike trails. It’s what you want it to be. It clearly impressed Adam. And he’s quite the skilled rider.
