  1. Palomar Divide, Santa Ysabel Truck Trail and just about all the rest of the North County USFS roads will most likely be closed due to fire danger. Call the Palomar Ranger District office before heading out (760) 788-0250.
  2. I've seen these trails, first hand and many years ago when I was more 'supple'... No need for broken bones on this ride. Just get yourself one of these new fangled protective suits... H.H...Rock on... :aggressive:

    April 9-15

Palomar Divide would be fine with dual sport tires, maybe a little slippery on true street tires. PM me if you can ride during the week. I also have a KLR and live in Oceanside too. I remember riding all the trails in the hills between Escondido, San Marcos and Oceanside back in the late 80's. I'd be happy to show you around... The ‘Killen Trial’ is quite nice and goes out of Fallbrook to Hwy 74 where you can then take the ‘Main Divide’ trail all the way up to Corona if you want to make a longer day of it…

    Weekday riders?

I'm retired so I'm available for weekday rides and guiding services... PM me after you get your dual sport.
  5. Craig, I hope you found the perfect wave today and I hope you do repost your ride. It was not your fault your ride thread got highjacked. My comments were only an attempt to help you out. There were more than a few people interested in your ride. All you needed to do was put up a recognizable starting place and time and then just say what you said in your last post. “I have no GPS and no map and no set route of trails. I’m familiar with the area and I’m just going for it to find my way to the top of Thomas Mountain.”. That statement would have given us a chance to get the flavor of your ride…
  6. H.H. you need to take control of this thread. Repost the ride date, start time and place. "Meeting in Temecula” just ain’t enough info. Even your previous description of the meeting place "I think we could all meet at the last super market parking lot on 79" is too vague for some of us. Use a street address, GPS co-ordinates or a known 'store name' in the parking lot. Is the parking lot meeting place on the north side or south side of 79?Also, have you pre-ridden the entire route or is some of this adlib and trail breaking? Everybody has a different idea of what adventure riding is about. Some don’t mind endless U-turns, locked gates and trails that peter out into super knarly beep beep sweat your b-lls off climbs and descents. Others may expect to actually be able to have what amounts to a guided tour within a known range of terrain difficulty. The more detailed and accurate your route and terrain descriptions are, the more likely you are to end up with a happy group of riders at the end of the day…Good Luck…
  7. KTMrad Thanks for the guidelines. I think they are very helpful suggestions. I’d like to add one more. In the past there has been a lot of un-intentional thread hijacking. If someone posts an offer to ride on a specific day and route, we should avoid the temptation to respond with “I can’t go on that day but I could go on this date” or “Lets add such and such trail or area to the ride”. After these sorts of responses are posted the ride area, difficulty rating, start time, meeting place and all the other important ride parameters get muddied up with all the off topic posts. So, Please KEEP ON THREAD. You can always PM the original poster with your supplemental ideas. Or, you can offer up your own ride in another thread and just post a link to your ride in other ride threads when appropriate. Thanks, stevehof
  8. OK Mike, Manly, Studly, Macho, anything you want. After all, you did give it a try... and you are way too big to piss off...

    weekday?

Greg, usually comments on a ride are put in the write-ups and photos forum... There's already a good post and thread of comments on your ride...
  10. Egads, H.H., don't feel bad, it is what it is...Not the best day for Mike as far as crashing is concerned. The ride today was led by Greg and the ride route was fine. Mike was just going for it I guess and got crossed up on some loose stuff. Sh-t happens... Your riding skills are better than most and a trail that is knarly for you is just too much for some of us...
  11. Nice ride, Thanks Greg!! - For H.H. - We KLR guys aren't all that fond of tarmac but you DO HAVE TO GET THERE.... BTW, only Mike was foolish enough to follow H.H. down the “super narlo bleep bleep trails”. That was a shortcut to the actual ride start… Mike paid for it as you can see…more than once... He’s a good sport for sure!!! H.H. keep it up and you'll force us all to become better riders or die trying...

    weekday?

FYI, the dirt road from Palomar divide TT down to Oak Grove is gated top and bottom. You can access the north entrance of Palomar Divide TT from Agaunga (at the Rancho California RV Park) or at the 'half way' Truck Trail from Sunshine Summit and the south entrance to Palomar Divide TT at about a mile north of Puerta La Cruz. Glad to hear there won't be any killer knarly single tracks...

    weekday?

I'm down for this ride if it remains as it was originally designed. Nate Harrison and other 'fire roads' Me and my 400lb KLR are not interested in the 'supper narlo bleep bleep techno' trails at all... So, xr650l bum could you clarify the ride route or ride intensity and that the meeting place is the Mobile station on the corner of 15 and 76 at 9:00am Wednesday... THANKS, Steve

    Old railroad trestle

That's interesting since Carrizo Creek and the Gorge area south of S2 all the way to Hwy 8 are all contained within the Anza Borrego Desert State Park boundaries. The tracks themselves do show as 'non-park' but the area right up to them should still be state park open to public access, at least by foot travel. There may well be a locked gate up there now but that was not the case 15 years ago and the park boundaries in that area have not been changed recently. Carrizo Creek on the north side of S2 runs into the bombing range and is for sure gated...

    Old railroad trestle

You can get right up to the trestle from the bottom by going up Carrizo gorge. It's not trespassing until you step on the tracks... I don't think you could ride all the way up. It's been years since I made that trip and I remember parking the 4WD and taking a bit of a hike to get up to the trestle...You might be able to get a bit further up the wash on a lightweight dual sport bike...
