What kind of vest are you wearing with all the pockets on it?
  6. Went up there on Saturday. Rained me the whole time except for the first stint between San Diego and Hwy 73 (toll road). At least I got some COCO's Japanese Curry on the way home. Yummy!!! Overall I wasn't too impressed with the show as a whole. Nothing there that you could get for cheaper than anywhere else. I bought two SHM10 mounts to make some Earmuff comm systems for the Miata when I'm going top down but that's cause they happened to be there. The manufacture displays were all great and the Ducati booth had the most scantily clad ladies haha. J&P Cycles weren't too bad either. The new V-Strom 1000. Not sure what I think about it. Kinda ugly IMO. Starting of the new Indian motorcycle and the required revving of the engine lol The Batman "bikes" Giant Slotbike track Suzuki Rotary The new Harley "Waterhead" The 42,000 dollar water quad Probably my favorite custom bike there Turbochopper

I'm down for another dirt ride soon. I'm really itching to get out on a dirt ride and camp somewhere. It's been a while since I did that.

Yet one more thing I miss about Texas. If you have your CHL there you didn't even get a phone in background check. You filled out the 4473 and walked out the door. When I got orders out here I had to leave pretty much all my guns back in Texas. I only brought my GLOCK 17 with 10 round magazines, all the rest were Illegal in Cali Even my 5 shot Bolt Action Mosin Nagant is illegal here since it has a bayonet :/
  9. For anyone who wants to join us on Sunday we will be riding around the SD area looking/scouting for sutiable spots to start a Motorcycle Gymkhana event(s) here in the local area. Over on ADV Rider there's a group of riders in Huntsville Alabama who have been doing this for a while. This is basically autocross for motorcycles if anyone knows what autocross is. If anyone has any suggestions for spots to look at or knows of any areas we could use please let us know. I don't have a solid time or place other than "Mid County" on Sunday. As soon as I get that info I'll post it up here. http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=788591 http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=788591&page=93

    Ultralight Aircraft

Recently joined the San Diego Ultralight Association. Been aggressively browsing for used ultralights all over. I know folks on bike forums usually have varied interests so I figured I'd see if anyone on here flies ultralights. 1) Does anyone have any advice for someone coming from GA aircraft. I.E. Cessna 150/152s. 2) Does anyone know of any ultralights for sale in the local area? Thanks, Josh

Yes Rotax 503. All of the Rotax "aviation" 2-stroke engines are basically repurposed snow mobile engines detuned some and given a much lower redline. The 503 on my bird makes max power at around 6500 RPM but in it's Snowmobile application it revs to something like 9,000 RPM.

Negative no license requried for Part 103 "vehicles" I.E. Ultralights. It is STRONGLY suggested you get at least some basic pilot training but if you want and had a large open area like a desert dry lake bed or an airport that will let you fly off of it with no training (not likely) then you could start flying with no training at all. There are restrictions you have to follow. Such as no flying over "congested" ares such as cities, no flying in controled airspace, no operating into towered airports without prior conact and permission from the field, no flying at night after sunrise/sunset (legal sunrise sunset) unless you have a strobe then you can operate 30 mins before and after sunrise/sunset. That evening flight went 20 minutes after legal sunset but I was able to be out after sunset since I was running strobes. You also have limits on aircraft weight and fuel capacity. Here's the full language of Part 103 of the FARs Overall though there's no cheaper way to get off the ground and flying. And it gets you out of the shadow of "Big brother" a little bit in regards to licenseing and what not. You just won't be able to fly into some areas due to the congestion. But lucky for us the vast majority of airspace in the US is uncontrolled so we can pretty much fly anywhere. Just not as fast lol.

Picked up the Hy-Tec Hurricane over the weekend. Here's some vids and pics. Video compilation of the first day I had it doing familization flights on a dry lake bed (El Mirage). After first few landings About 1500 feet AGL looking down on the landing area. You can barely make out the truck and another ultralight on the lake bed. On the truck ready to come back to San Diego After getting the wings back on and putting it in it's new hangar The day after getting the wings on a buddy of mine and I went up and he got some arieal video of me. It was a flight with a member of the SDUA to get familiar with the area around the field. Saw a few dual sports on some dirt roads around otay lakes road. https://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?v=10202116162291692&set=vb.1416956060&type=3&theater https://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?v=10202116190852406&set=vb.1416956060&type=3&theater Then a little video from last night doing a late evening sunset flight.

    Ultralight Aircraft

I just joined the SDUA late last week. I'm going up to take a look at a HY-TEK Hurricane 103 this weekend around the El Mirage dry lake. If it's a nice as the pictures show I'll probably wind up with it. Getting pretty excited. The drug smuggling deal is a pretty big deal. ULs are hard to pick up on radar from my understanding. The Feds came down and gave a presentation to the SDUA as to what to look for.
  16. Got to get a few runs in a piece. Had to modify the "track" a little bit to fit this parking lot. Didn't spend long here then went out for a ride up to Pala. I give you the two newest of newbs to Motorcycle Gymkhana haha
  17. I remember you posting about that. Was going to go up for it but decided to do the Gym thing instead. See ya around
  18. Gas Station @ 17011 W Bernardo Dr, San Diego, CA 92127 0930 meetup. So about 3 hours from the time I'm posting this.
  19. I'm trying to google this place and it's saying it's smack dab in the middle of San Diego. But from the description it sounds like it's pretty far north. The campground on google pulls one up in Mexico. I'm confused.
  20. I autocrossed for years in a Supercharged 91 Miata. I should be getting that car back from my brother later this year or early next year. Loved it. Still no set time for Sunday at this time.
  21. Guess I will NOT be taking my DL650 here haha
  22. Newb here. Currently on a 04 DL650. My dirt experience is pretty limited. There isn't a whole lot of public access land in Texas to play on so that mainly leaves us with gravel Farm Roads and County Roads. I would guess that my total combined off road experience on dirt oriented bikes to be a year or less. Hope to get out and meet some of ya'll. I'm also a member over on ADVRIDER under the username of Jeepinbanditrider. Been riding since I was 16 back in 2001. Been though a list of bikes over that time. Suzuki GS1000E (still have it) Suzuki Bandit 1200S KLR650 BMW R1150R FJR1300 DR350SE FZ6 BMW F800ST Suzuki DL650 "WeeStrom" (still have it) I'm currently stationed on MCAS Miramar and have been in the Marine Corps for 10 years in June. I have been a Flight Equipment Technician for about 5 years and for 5 years prior to that I was a Gas Turbine Engine Mechanic for CH-53 helicopters. Prior bases include MCAS New River and NAS Fort Worth JRB.

    Newb on MCAS Miramar

Found Boulder Creek road. But Deer Creek gets hits in many different spots. I've been on light and heavy dirt oriented bikes. I loved my DR350SE off road but just couldn't adjust to the lower highway speeds. I didn't like wringing it's neck all the time to keep up with traffic. My KLR was good but heavy. The DL650 so far has met all of my expectations. Most of it's limitations are rider based. I've found airing down a bit helps a lot in the softer stuff.

    What do you say ?

Come down to San Diego and I'll balance them for you for free. I spoon my own tires on as well as balance them.

Thanks for the welcomes. I'll definatly be joining on some local rides. I've been hitting as many dirt roads as I can but it seems that all of them I see on Mapsource wind up being deadends into locked gates and "private property". Flying Across Eastern Oregon somewhere. Here's a dirt shot from Utah just east of Provo where I stopped to camp for the night a few days ago. I setup camp and went and hit the forest service roads and found a nice piece of two track.
