  1. UPDATE: Received a positive response from Gary @ MotoVentures about this. PM sent to all those interested with details. Tentatively scheduling for Friday, April 18th or Friday, April 25th...
  2. No, Arnie, the DR650 is still unwell. Fortunately, valves were in spec, air filter is just fine, but, unfortunately, seems like it's going to need valve seals/guides (and a high-comp piston while I'm in there? ). It does run perfect nonetheless, but burns at bit of oil at startup for a good 5 or so minutes, resulting in a bit of white smoke air pollution... something that I need to decide whether my neighbors and I can tolerate everytime the DR gets rolled out of the man cave.
  3. Hey Ken, here's a description of the concrete buildings along Otay Truck Trail... apparently WWII relics... "At around 11.2 miles (Point I) you will see a concrete structure on the left hand side of the road as well as a small road spur. Take a break here and stroll down that spur to see some additional structures as well as some good viewpoints. The structures here are the remnants of US Navy artillery emplacements built during World War II to help defend Brown Field and San Diego from a potential Japanese naval attack. It is pretty cool to poke around here for a bit." from this website http://www.mountainbikebill.com/OtayMtnLoop.htm
  4. Okay, sounds like we have 5 firms + 2-3 maybes... I'll contact MotoVentures as soon as possible to check into a group price for us toward the end of April. I'll post information here + create a private message group... Wheelie time!

Noob friendly motocross track in San Diego?

Sunday, April 6 at Otay works for me! Count me in. I'll PM you, Winty... maybe we can truckpool?
  6. Hey All, I'm trying to get a hold of TrophyHunter regarding the DR650 problem discussed below... I wrote this in a PM to him but get a "Can't recieve more messages" error. Is there another way to contact members? Will someone relay the following the TrophyHunter and PM me back? Thanks all! TrophyHunter, Once upon a time you offered to help me if I had any issues with my DR650. Well, that time has come. My bike is a 2007 model with only 8,000 miles but it has started smoking white smoke at startup lately, which clears up entirely after it gets warm (maybe 4-5 minutes into a ride). It seems to have the same power and response. I've read it could be valve stem seals and/or even piston rings. I must admit that I've NEVER EVER adjusted/checked the valves and they have been HARD miles on the bike thus far... but all other maintenance (oil changes, etc) has been impecable. I don't know how to adjust the valves, the bikes always ran/sounded fine, so I just haven't done it. I know... bike abuse. Anyway, before I get too far into research what's wrong with the bike or purchase a hi-compression piston set and replacement valve stem seals the guys at ProCycle suggested I check/adjust the valves, which MIGHT take care of the smoking problem. Can you/will you help me check my valves? I have a brand new feeler gauge and the special DR650 valve adjustment tool, just don't know what to do. Yes, I can check YouTube, but I'll buy pizza and beer if you're willing to walk me through it one of these nights. I'll come to you, or I have all the tools and a work space at my place in Encinitas. Thoughts? Thanks in advance! mtnmanseth

DR650 Smoking on Startup - TrophyHunter?

Hey gang, Just wanted to send a quick THANK YOU to Ken (aka "The DR Doctor") for successfully helping me perform surgery on my DR on Sunday. We changed the oil, checked the valves (which were in spec), and removed/replaced the NSU screws. My bike still smokes on startup (3-4 minutes) so.... next step... pull the head and replace the valve seals/guides and high-compression piston. It ran perfect during our ride through the Otay Truck Trail after reassembly, so I need to decide whether to embark on a head-pulling mission. But, that's another story... Thanks, Ken, Tom, Tim, Dave, Aaron for all your help Sunday. High five!!!

Did you consider the 2013 or 2014 GasGas line? I L-O-V-E my 2005, and am very intrigued by an eventual upgrade... any specific concerns about the 2T GasGas products?

DR650 Smoking on Startup - TrophyHunter?

I have two Uni air filters that I swap in and out of the bike after rides/trips, both are in like new condition, frequently maintained (cleaned, dried, oiled). Never had an issue or concern with the air filters or fitting them to the bike. I did pull the carb to rejet and other mods at about 1,000 miles but reassembly went well and I'm V-E-R-Y "detail oriented" when it comes to working on my "scooters". I don't believe there's been an air leak to introduce dirt into the motor. Buuuuttttt...... you never know. Thanks for all the ideas guys! Pumped to drink, eat, and wrench with Ken and Goofy! This is the best forum ever made in the history of the interweb, thanks guys.

DR650 Smoking on Startup - TrophyHunter?

Hmmm thanks Robert and tntmo... so, replacing the valve seals/guides is a B-I-G job, right? Head off and all? I guess I'll cross that bridge when I ride to it. Parts aren't too bad, less than $300 for a new piston/rings + seals/guides... just surprised if it needs such repairs after 8,000 miles. Ahh well, we'll start with the valves and a rough internal inspection and see what we see. Hopefully won't back back on here pleading with someone to help me pull the head! Cheers guys

Awesome!! I'll come to you and bring any other tools we'll need... I'll just trailer the bike to your place so it's cold, no worries. I haven't done the NSU screws yet, nope. Sounds like a good plan! Please contact me at sjarsky@msn.com

    Tire Change in North County?

Just want to say thanks to ADV Bum for helping me install my new tires last night! Was it fun? Nope. Easy? Nay. Fingers sore today? A little. Good practice? Definitely! I learned what additional tools I'll need to carry and feel pretty competent changing brand new stiff-as-hell D606s in the cold. Next time, though, I'm having a shop do it Thanks again to Bum and all others for the advice and guidance! Cheers

    Tire Change in North County?

I'm also in Encinitas and have a kauritmoto tool I'm willing to lend for the job. [Edit: Whoops, just noticed you've got a 17mm axle so it won't be all that useful to you.] That kauritmoto tool looks cool... for those curious, check this out: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=891116 Thanks Wintyfresh, good to know that at least a couple of you live in Encinitas!

    Tire Change in North County?

I just bought a Bead Buddy II off Amazon for $12 including shipping. Maybe you're right, I really should get better at it. Especially because there are apparently ZERO motorcycle shops between Del Mar and Encinitas, California. Odd. Thanks for the offer to help, bikeslut, if you were closer I would buy the beer and pizza. Thanks again.

    Truck transmission shop?

Gentlemen and Ladies: I'm brand new to the area and need some advice... I have a 2006 Ford F150 4X4 that developed transmission slippage last night. I live in Encinitas, work on Carmel Mountain road. I have NO CLUE who to bring it to... can anyone suggest a reputable transmission repair shop in San Diego, please? Thank you in advance for any help! Cheers

    Truck transmission shop?

Got my truck back today. Advanced Automatic Transmissions in Santee took it in, tore it apart, and found a split "forward drum" and some burnt/worn rings, gears, and bands. I opted to have them rebuild mine rather than get a Ford remanufactured, despite the warranty being 3x longer. They already had it in the air and Ian (the owner) did a fine job of explaining how my own rebuilt transmission (with some upgraded/HD guts including torque converter) would be better in the long run vs. a reman tranny. $2,630 all said and done. Truck drives GREAT, seems to shift even smoother. So far so good, hope this one lasts another 98k miles!! Thanks for the guidance, Randy. Needless to say, my plans to buy a KTM or Husaberg 450 is... delayed <_</>

    Truck transmission shop?

It rolled onto the tow truck just now with 98,366 miles on it.

    Truck transmission shop?

Randy, I bought my 2006 F150 after I sold my 98 F150 in May. My 98 had the 4.6L, 5-speed manual, with 235,000 miles on it. Didn't leak a drop, ran perfect. Changed the STOCK CLUTCH at 190k!! My mechanic was amazed. It was a Montana truck, loooooooooong highway miles, no stop and go traffic, I sold it because I didn't think it would last a week in SoCal driving conditions. Had to leave the 'ole boy in Montucky. The reason I bought another Ford truck was my experience with my 1998. This new truck so far... <_</> We'll see, may be a simple replacement part, right?

    Truck transmission shop?

First thing I did was check transmission fluid, which was replaced about 10k miles ago by previous owner. Fluid was clear red, smelled new, not burnt, and level was perfect. Truck has an EDGE programmer with transmission fluid temp display, which has always ranged 140-160 degrees F in past 6k miles that I've owned the truck. Not sure what's up... Tow truck is en route to get it to Ian at Advanced Automatic Transmissions. Randy, I did specify that I was sent by Colin. Ugh, this may be an expensive one... definitely cutting into my new KTM/Husaberg purchase budget Thanks fellas for your advice!

Great, thanks Randy, I completely agree that quality work is worth a little extra time/effort... I'll try to reach Ian or Joseph. Thanks again!
