SD to Big Bear Fri, May 24

ARG!!!! I wana gooo but can't. The turn is at the end of Cary road in Anza, it's cake if you don't miss the 20mph sign while looking for a trail. Hope you have a great time!
  2. I'm new to the shock service world and am looking for some advice. I bought my bike two years ago and have put 14,000 miles on it. The original owner had the shocks done by precision concepts back in the early 2000s and never touched them afterwards. I'm putting new head tube bearings in so the shock tubes are out, the iron is hot and i'm looking to freshen these things up. Do they need more than just an oil change, is this something a mechanically inclined person should attempt or is there lots of specialised tooling needed? If someone has any recomendations on some local shock rebuilders I might be interested. Thanks in advance! :good:/>

Ocean to Desert -- The Hard Way

Yea! Sounds like the "sea to sea" ride I've been working on. The best route i've got is along the border. That's by far the shortest distance from the ocean to dirt I know of. Coyote Canyon is not a through route anymore!!!! I was so disappointed when I read about that, missed it by a matter of years. My bike is "In the shop" waiting on parts right now but it sounds like we will be meeting soon enough. I'm thinking out to the desert your way (northern route) and back to the ocean via south route... we took the southern route out to the desert on this ride... Mo dert iz mo beda

    Front shock rebuild

Thank you for the advice and time. I am tackling the shocks myself and have had good luck so far. I have everything disassembled and cleaned. What I found was some slightly worn bushings and extremely dirty oil. (metallic shimmer in sunlight) I think I found the source to be the aluminum bore on the "fork slider" at what would be the most used stroke portion of the bore. There is an egg shaped worn area that I dial bore gauged to be .0075" larger than the rest of the bore. I have ordered up all new bushings to try and tighten up the tolerances as much as possible without having to do any machine work. Also the valve orifice (the one that the rebound needle seats against) on the top of the cartridge shaft (threads into the very tip of the rod) was loose which explains why my rebound setting was different every time I went to check it! Also I found the main spring shims (made out of pvc) were cut by mr. hackdaddy himself! these things weren't even parallel from one end to another! I was very surprised to so something like that form a high end shop like Precision concepts with a $900 job. Maybe my buddy that sold me the bike forgot he let his elementary school kid set the spring shim height? Good news is the steel for tubes are straight as an arrow ( .002" end to end)!

    Front shock rebuild

Nice! Thanks for the advice guys! Suspenders- Thank you for all the info! I like all the tips! Are you aware of any prone-to-wear points on the xr4 shocks that I should pay close attention to? I'm not opposed to upgrading to some inverted forks if the rebuild parts prices on my originals starts adding up quick, any advice on that?
  13. Whats the name of the road? So everyone can be careful. And what curve was it? See this rides write-up
  14. Sorry we had to bail on the trip... So It happened, my first motorcycle wreck. The kind that gets you to the zen state, everything is in slow motion, you somehow have time to think. wow, this isn't good i'm completely out of control am I going to be ok?, but wait... I got this!, no I don't!, I got this! no I don't, I got this! waaahooo .................................................. What the? , kato sure took his helmet off fast, this doesn't make sense..... Ooooooo, i've been laying here long enough for him to take his helmet off. Crap I must have hit my head! Ok, lets see hear right arm move check left arm move check right leg move check left leg move check, wait a sec why am I wet, O crap am I blee, no its water! hahahahahahaha I exploded my water pack. :crazy:/> It's at the very north end of Cary road in Anza. If you're breaking the cardinal rule of don't take your eyes off the road and you miss the 20mph left warning sign and you're going 40 you're in for a hell of a surprise! It is a cresting off camber diminishing radius turn. :axehead:/> In other words if you don't slow down on early entry you are left with that weightless feeling of coming over a crest and you suddenly realise the road is going hard left and you have no traction! I had a lowside in the bag and then wham! There is a little lip on the edge of the road that if you're in a really nice back-it-in stance will hook your rear tire and send you and your bike airborne. So "I still got this" i'm looking at a crossed-up nose wheelie and wham, second rear wheel hook-to-highside-ejection waaahooooo!!!!!!!! BIG thanks to Kato for keeping a close eye on me afterwards! I'm doing great, just a little sore. We both rode home! These bikes are amazing! https://maps.google.com/maps?q=cary+road+anza&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x80dba09aebfef805:0xe44f1e7b082c9686,Cary+Rd,+Anza,+CA+92539&gl=us&ei=sw-IUcaOF8n0iQLX4oGIAQ&ved=0CDMQ8gEwAA Crash path.bmp

I was on black canyon road about a month ago and the gate was closed. Does anybody know if it's been opened at both ends? I'm hoping to drop down Pamo road from Ramona and link with black canyon. Any info is greatly appreciated, we have a long trek to big bear and I really want to incorporate sy tt but really don't want to go all the way down pamo rd to find a closed gate. Thanks!
