    DOT Rear Knobby

Motoz Xtreme Hybrid is DOT. I put a 120/100x18 on my XR and it just fits. However, they also make a 110/100x18. https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/742/65463/Motoz-Xtreme-Hybrid-Tire I guess the gummy version is softer if you don't care about street wear: https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/742/77217/Motoz-Xtreme-Hybrid-Gummy-BFM-Tire

  6. Could be fun... 50% off for motorcycles. $550 for chase vehicle that carries gear.
  7. Solo ride from Campo to Jewell Valley. Friendly agents waved me on along the border. There’s a gate at Lakeside Sportsman’s Club. Turned around and did an easy loop around lake Domingo. Then rode up to Hwy 94 back to Campo and checked out the Motor Transport Museum open house.

    Recommendations for Big Bike tires

FYI... 8-Ball likes to use Dyna beads to balance tires. If you don't want beads you might request good old fashioned wheel weights in advance!

The next step (what moto to get)

The XR is not "bad". On your budget, for back-country runs, it would be really good. It will start right up cold, especially if you have a pumper carb. It will handle the sand but, as you know, it is heavier than the modern bikes. Not a big deal. The issue is the kick starter on a carb'd bike after laying it down. Again, it doesn't bother me that much because I do not tip it over on every ride. Stalling it while climbing a hill will also make you wish you had a magic button. The XR is lighter than a DRZ because it does not have a large battery and starter. You will have to install a smaller battery on the XR to run a dualsport kit. IMO, it is not worth the mechanical effort, cost or weight gain to install an electric start on a XR400. Bottom line on your budget... If you don't mind the kick starter, get the XR. If you do, get the DRZ or the DR350 or the CRF250L

The next step (what moto to get)

If you lay it down regularly, you want an electric start (DRZ). I have an XR and kick starting can be a pain. I don't really lay it down that much though. You also want a pumper carb on the XR, not the stock carb.

Where to ride Sunday taking a noob

Or there's the outer loop of Corral Canyon. Very noob friendly: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/32.7169673,-116.500947/32.7226306,-116.558478/@32.7115162,-116.5540025,8310m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m14!4m13!1m10!3m4!1m2!1d-116.5612395!2d32.7293402!3s0x80d970ffa08ec8c5:0x49343b2c1876c843!3m4!1m2!1d-116.5963666!2d32.7044826!3s0x80d971cf7ede3d5d:0xe9fc52e0d0dddadb!1m0!3e0

Where to ride Sunday taking a noob

Start at Pine Valley cul-de-sac. You need an adventure pass to park there. Circle around Bear Valley Rd. Here's a map. Maybe others know the area better: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/32.8164115,-116.5328447/32.7539392,-116.5172293/@32.7780573,-116.5114425,9975m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m14!4m13!1m10!3m4!1m2!1d-116.512897!2d32.8023588!3s0x80d97a1fac079711:0xd0ae7ad833f1647c!3m4!1m2!1d-116.5225874!2d32.7422427!3s0x80d970cfd119263d:0x3587d79355593d18!1m0!3e0
  16. Nice time in the desert today. Sunny and 83 degrees. Bubbagums led the group on a quickly planned ride. Leader got a flat but it was quick change at the trestle and go. The other two riders are buddies I grew up with in UC. The wait for burgers at the Blu-In was 60 minutes but worth it. Here's the 5 minute gopro video:
  17. If the goal is to upload a google street view path directly along the straight lines of the international border, you would have to fill in the gaps by either hiking/climbing along those sections that are not ride-able. You could also fill in the no-road gaps using a drone with a 360 camera (but that wouldn't really look like street view). So, ride the border where you can and upload those sections first, then go back and fill in the gaps. It would be a hell of lot of work. Even if you never filled in the gaps, it would be cool to be able to view the sections that are ride-able. Also, that google street view "loaner" camera cluster is huge compared to the consumer 360 cameras hitting the market now. Good luck!

    ALTA Redshift Ebike

Looks like fun but only an hour of fast paced off-road ride time. https://www.dirtrider.com/2018-alta-redshift-ex-review#page-4 They make a supermoto that looks cool too. https://www.altamotors.co/redshiftsm/
  19. Could have been. We had two KTMS, one red Honda, and my white Honda XR.
  20. Once you get past the wall prototypes you can ride without an escort. Modified route below dips down to border fence/road right before Tecate giving you a little extra border line time. https://www.google.com/maps/dir/32.5822623,-116.9125759/32.5784438,-116.6287275/@32.5821897,-116.6749214,6903m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m29!4m28!1m25!3m4!1m2!1d-116.8674717!2d32.5626464!3s0x80d940f23029602d:0x6aa2f31d084651cf!3m4!1m2!1d-116.8479648!2d32.5583024!3s0x80d940f23029602d:0x6aa2f31d084651cf!3m4!1m2!1d-116.7557724!2d32.5727696!3s0x80d96b4dc95b9ff3:0x5b81e11eb829f660!3m4!1m2!1d-116.7107795!2d32.5732885!3s0x80d96b4dc95b9ff3:0x5b81e11eb829f660!3m4!1m2!1d-116.667073!2d32.5744918!3s0x80d9132d6ff0cd1f:0x31d688312e45a723!1m0!3e2
  21. It is not a straight shot from IB to Yuma. The existing fence (and associated dirt road) starts and stops. You can see this on Google Maps. Assuming you get a Border Patrol escort you can ride from IB to about a mile past the existing border wall prototypes at the foot of Otay Mtn. On this initial section from IB, you would have to be escorted through the double fence security zone and you would have to circumvent the San Ysidro and Otay international border crossings themselves. With an escort it would be a pretty straight route. The border fence/road ends at Otay Mtn and you would have to venture inland up and over Otay Mtn and ride to Barrett Junction and then eventually to Tecate where you could pick up the border fence/dirt road again. This is the route which takes you away from the border from Otay Mtn to Tecate: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/32.5822623,-116.9125759/32.5784438,-116.6287275/@32.5574518,-116.8633837,26144m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m9!4m8!1m5!3m4!1m2!1d-116.7529336!2d32.572164!3s0x80d96b4dc95b9ff3:0x5b81e11eb829f660!1m0!3e2 From Tecate you can ride at least all the way to Campo along the border fence. To log your route you can use a 360 camera mounted on your bike or helmet and upload to Google maps/street view as described here: https://www.google.com/streetview/publish/
