  1. This sounds like a great idea. Like BS, I've ridden quite a few PRs locally. The LoCal 250 that BMW and the IBA put together was pretty cool. I hadn't heard about unmanned posts, but that's totally do-able. I'm away next weekend (holiday office parties), but can be there to help/ride/drink the weekend of the 16th.
  2. Nicely done--written and ridden. I've done most of that route on a quad, so I know what a bear that was. Great job.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY Johnnybags.

Just how old is said Mr. Bags? Inquiring minds--who might also have a b-day today--would like to know.

    Big Bike Camping

I was thinking of doing the very same thing over at Superstition. There are lots of trails to explore (I've been all over the place and I always find something new). This would also be within the 200-300 mile range and allow for excellent camping opportunities. Alas, I have a holiday function early on Sunday... superstition map mar07.pdf

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes, well said. My sentiments exactly. I shiver as I ride to work. I like the fresh air, but it's been cold lately. When I see the folks living in tents and boxes or under tarps...right outside of downtown San Diego...I realize that I have it dang good. Note: Those sentiments don't apply to the occupiers who are not deserving of turkey or cranberry.
  7. You might be a Wall Street Occupier if: · You moved to a tent in Zucotti Park because you always wanted a nicer place to live. · You quit your “job” to attend the protests, but your mother continues your allowance and now does the dishes herself. · You are confused that you can’t find the Wal-Mart on Wall Street. · You are enraged that the taxpayers had to bail out Wall Street even though you’ve never paid taxes or know anyone who has. · You hate capitalism but expect a capitalist to provide you a good paying job with great benefits. · You think Socialism has something to do with Facebook, and Capitalism has to do with Washington, DC. · You demand a job, forgetting that you were fired for not doing the one you had. · You despise the rich even though they pay your share of taxes. · You’re a little behind in your rent because your drug dealer insisted on cash. · You are very clear in your protest objectives . . . “Screw the USA”, “Save the ______ (fill in the blanks – whales, spotted owls, sturgeon . . .)”, “Self-realization is the first step toward self-actualization”, “Down with … uh, … everything!” · You think 99 weeks of unemployment is the least the government should give you for the 3 months you put in at McDonalds. · You drove a Toyota to the protest, you’re plugged in to a Sony Walkman, talk over a Samsung phone, and play a Yamaha keyboard in a punk band but you are incensed over jobs being outsourced to other countries. · You demand your rights, but can’t quite recall where they are enumerated. · You believe you have a right to every penny earned, but the rich do not, and you base your claim on equality. · You believe a man is greedy if he worked his way up to CEO on 16-hour days, runs a company employing thousands, and made $10 million last year, but is not greedy if he made $50 million last year for making two motion pictures or shooting a ball through a hoop. · You are convinced the “system” is holding you back from gaining wealth, status, and position. Dropping out of high school, dulling your mind with crack and MJ, a few arrests on your record, and stealing from your employer had nothing to do with it. · You left behind trash, feces, urine-soaked sod, discarded clothing and used condoms after your “Save the Environment” protest. · You know you’re not a Socialist because you stick pretty much to yourself at parties. · You want to improve the environment and you have the tattoos and piercings to prove it. · You don’t pay taxes, but somehow that’s more than your “fair share”. · You hate the rich but hope you win the lottery. · You haven't bathed in over a month but demand to be taken seriously · From the looks of it, "greening" the environment means starting with your teeth.

    Helmet Style preference

Yup, what she said. The AFX FX39 is a nice little helmet. I wore it for 3K+ miles to Moses Lake, WA and back not too long ago. It was comfortable, kept the dust out (with goggles) and provided a good field of view. I have two of them now. Don't know if I have a Shoei or Arai head. I've been told I have a "block" head...

I need a little help, have a moment?

Looks fantastic, Strega. I'm an editor at heart, I'm afraid; a true wordsmith. I'm also a fan of Seat Concepts (the R1150GS seat photos will be mine). Spyder is testing it out as we speak. I didn't go thru the entire site for grammar and punctuation, but saw this on on the BMW F650/800 2008-2011 page: This combined with our proprietary foam creates a seat ready to offer a enjoyable ride for the long or short ride ahead. Sorry; they hate me at work because of this kind of nitpicking. Kudos.

Isle of Man TT: Wicked video

Just passing this along to you high=speed riders (initials are BS). I'd like to tell you this is me on San Diego's Palomar Mountain or Orange County's Ortega Highway. Look out! The Isle of Man TT was for many years the most prestigious motor-cycle race in the world. The racing is held on public roads closed for racing by an Act of Tynwald (the parliament of the Isle of Man). It is the oldest motorcycle racing circuit still in use. The official lap record for the Snaefell Mountain Course is 17 Minutes and 12.30 seconds at an average speed of 131.578 mph. http://www.angelfire.com/ak2/intelligencerreport/insane_race.html
  11. Really good stuff. Thanks for posting a great write-up and nice photos.
  12. The antennas don't help much on those sand tops. Another of the many reasons I love Superstition.

    AMA List of Touring Essentials

Too much? Not enough? The following bike inventory and pack list was developed based on extensive two-up motorcycle travel in very remote and undeveloped areas. If you are planning to travel to Baja California, Mexico; undeveloped countries in Africa or remote areas of the Himalayas, then you should consider taking a good portion of the spare parts, repair supplies and tools listed here. If you are traveling in Europe or other developed areas in which your bike is sold and serviced, you won't need to take anything beyond the stock tool kit. If you are not riding off-road and adjusting your tire pressures, then you may not need the tubes, air pump or in-line air gauge. In short, adjust what you take along to suit the conditions of your ride. It is important to note that you should carefully consider what to take along if you are on a group trip to an undeveloped area. It is sometimes the case that you are essentially on your own if you need repairs or parts, as some tour organizers have a pathological aversion to carrying common spare parts and repair supplies. Without a written guarantee of availability, don't count on your tour organizer to have anything that you would need in the way of typical repair parts and supplies. Regarding tools, if you are planning a trip to undeveloped areas, it is best if you go over your bike and test every bolt, nut and connector to ensure that you have the required tool on the bike. I have been to places where I had more tools on the bike than the local professional motorcycle mechanics had in their shops. For instance, don't count on local availability of things like snap ring pliers or specialized O-rings or gaskets. For items other than spare parts and tools, we usually take everything off the bike that hasn't been used when we return home from a trip. I know this is hard to believe with a list that adds up to over 1,400 items, but we do whittle it down every time we come home. And please keep in mind that we only take the full inventory when we are traveling unsupported through developing countries. Also remember that the people who ridicule you for carrying so much stuff are the first to come to you for medicine, first aid supplies, parts and repair materials when they don't have any of their own. Take along as little as possible, but pack what you would want to have if you were broken down alone in the African bush or the Australian outback. AMA List of Touring Essentials

I saw this, Randy. I thought, "Well, that looks like an OK list. But, I'd change/delete/add a few items." I have a couple of really good long-distance DS gear lists on Excel spreadsheets. I'll try to upload those. And so begins a thread of essential touring equipment!
  16. Great to see your progress, and even better that you're having a good time. Add a few miles to the Saddle Sore 1000 as there are often minor discrepancies between the odometer and GPS. 1040 is usually good. Be safe, have fun, give us the details when you return!

    Very, very nice!
  18. Yes, with both the ride AND the blonde... Go get 'em, killer.
  19. Looks like our boy made it in great time; I never doubted it. Why have an adventure bike if you don't want to ride it in the dark, on the ice, in the snow, to a blonde girl with a foreign accent's house? I mean, COME ON, folks! Are we selling Southwest Airline flights or promoting (semi) responsible dual sporting? You know dat's right! That's what it's all about. Can I get an amen? Let us know how it went, GF.
  20. I dunno, those tags on your new riding gear may cause some unwanted wind resistance. C'mon. ride this bad boy all the way through. 1080 will be a nice little accomplishment; even better that you're on a skinny little ADV bike. Skip the motel reservations and ride until you're tired, then stop. But i don't think you will stop before Denver. I predict you'll ride all the way through--and enjoy yourself to boot. Yes, the windscreen looks fine. Higher would be best, I gotta say. But what you have looks fine. Go get 'em!
  21. Like others who insure their bikes with GEICO, I received this notice today. Interesting concept--storing my bike for "the winter" and saving on my insurance costs. Still, they do realize I'm in Sunny SoCal, right? I mean, c'mon, you east coast gecko, we ride 365 around here! Here's the message: Research has shown that the winter blues are caused by long hours of darkness, frigid temperatures, and fewer motorcycle rides. Break free from cold-weather weariness by putting some green back in your pocket enroll in GEICO's Winter Season Storage Plan today! If your bike hibernates between October 1st and April 1st, you can take advantage of this great savings opportunity. To find out more, and even enroll, simply log in to your policy at geico.com. It's that easy! You'll save a bundle and have peace of mind knowing that your ride is safe during those gray winter months. PS: You may request to remove your bike from storage prior to 04/01/2012. Simply log in to your policy and select "Contact Us" under the Resource Center to send an email letting us know the date you will be putting your bike back on the road.
  22. Yup. And a comfy seat (a sheep skin cover will be fine). And some good road tunes (music makes the ride sooooo much easier).
  23. C'mon, man, that is a PERFECT Iron Butt ride (the SaddleSore 1000). I'd say it's a piece of cake, having done several of these rides, but I wasn't on a 650, either! Still, I managed 973 miles in a day on my BMW 1150 recently. And that was on much worse roads than the I-15 you'll mostly be on. Do it! http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/getdocument.cfm?DocID=1
