Just finished wiring up the wifes's new bike and wondering what to expect out of the stock 2.3 gal tank. Is 100 miles do-able? Anyone have any experience to share?
Is it a 230L or a 230F? On my '08 230L I get around 90 miles before hitting reserve, with about 20-30 miles on reserve. Depending on the type of riding of course, in soft sand I have gotten as low as 65 miles before hitting reserve, all pavement riding its over 100 usually...
Bring a MSR bottle just in case, that little bottle will get the 230 like 30 extra miles

For Tacoma wrenching/mods check out TTORA
If you want to save some coin, and not go to a shop. I've done the H2O pump and timing belt on my truck, its not bad just takes time. I'm in Winchester if you are interested and willing to drive, I would do the belt and pump for you. Might as well do new accessory belts and radiator hoses as well as the t-stat and a coolant change since it all has to come apart anyways.
The e-brake sounds like something is mis-adjusted, either the e-brake itself or the rear brake shoes are done or mis-adjusted.
I need to get my crank pulley holder tool back from a friend I loaned it to if you are interested. You could help or I could do all the work...
Info on your LC? shoot me a pm and I'll give you my cell

Here's my setup, approximately 10,100 lumens total:
LED's: two 30 series spots(1500 lumens each) and a 60 series flood(3600 lumens) from advmonster.com

Running their dimmer module also, it has a nice feature, a high beam bypass. So when I'm on low beam, they are dimmed, but when I hit the high beam they go full bright. With this feature I run the LEDS on the road as DRLs
Also converted the stock headlight to 5000k 35w hi/lo HID(3500 lumens)
pics were taken before the HID conversion
stock low beam-no LED's:
stock hibeam, full bright LED's:

happened to a buddy of mine on his first ride on his new 650r. we were going up alessandro, other guy was coming down, he was on the outside of a blind corner and bam buddy ended up upside down in the manzanita. luckily nobody hurt.
I have a feeling the reason this happens is the guys that cant ride very well go up hixon then down alessandro and they think they own the trail

I feel the need to get cold! Anybody up for Bee Canyon, try and make it up to Idyllwild? Gonna be leaving from Winchester around 3:45

Ok guys sorry for the delay but I finally got the actual tracks off my phone and uploaded to Dual sport maps. Ive named the tracks in a more descriptive manner also. I'll be deleting the proposed tracks off the site as they are not accurate...

Definitely be at the temecula one!
Interesting meeting, seems that all the alternative RMPs they came up with would close AT LEAST HALF of the OHV routes currently open. Bad for anyone with a green/red sticker. They did talk about leaving open or opening more routes to street legal vehicles only, which would be good for us with plates. They also mentioned that a lot of the closures would be to routes that are surrounded by private property.
They want comments!!! In writing! Deadline is the 22nd or 23rd.
This is only concerning BLM land in LA, Riverside and San Diego Counties (not the desert BLM lands)

Awesome! Ive been drawing it in google earth, then converting the kmz to gpx, then uploading it to the site. This will save like 3 or 4 steps...

It was a blast! Loads of miles though especially the last day. That also means you can't sightsee much. I can't fathom riding 1000 in a day(24 hours) like the guys that ironman the B1K...
edit:cant figure out how to attach the gpx files so I'll make my tracks public on dualsportsmaps.com, I'll update the projected track that's on there to the actual track we took later
darn I guess we took too many pictures so they have to go here:
these are from my buddys camera

Buddy of mine and I did a over 1000 mile, 4 1/2 day trip from Temecula to Laughlin and back, most of our route was dirt...
Here's the ride report(I'll update with more/new pics once I get them from my buddy):
Left my work in Sage a little late, around 1PM Wednesday the 9th. Hit a few twistys on the way to dirt on the backside of Anza.
Stopped for a pee break
and it was COLD!! snow on the ground in the shade
Headed down the Cooper Cienega Truck Trail and yep, its freshly bladed. Little did we know, the scrapers have been BUSY! All over the state and in AZ also. Freshly bladed dirt roads, a nice surprise as we can haul major butt...
No issues or pictures all the way through to Warner Springs. Gassed up in WS then up to Julian. From Julian we hit Mason Valley Truck trail down Oriflamme Canyon to our fist camp. Most of Oriflamme was done in the dark
Moon was almost full and Jupiter was hanging around really bright
We were treated to a low level flight show by a few Apaches, freekin awesome how low those guys fly. Almost silent until they are right on top of you, glad I'm not an afgan! All this happened at night so no pics...
Woke up after a FREEZING night to the beauty of the canyon
Broke camp and headed to the days challenge, Pinyon Mountain Road! No issues until the squeeze, I had miss-packed my load and it was too far forward so I couldn't lean back. Rather than eating crap I opted to bulldog it down.
Looking back on the squeeze
Up the ledges no issues
Heart Attack Hill I opted to bulldog again. Up Fairchild Hill with a tremendous wheelie from the mighty 230L!
Buddy noticed his rack bolt was coming loose so we stopped to tighten it. Also noticed his peg bolt was loose and one of his rack bolts was completely gone, along with his left rear turn signal also noticed one of his header pipe bolts was gone(turned out the stud broke so no quick fix)
nice place to stop in the shade
Replacement bolt fell out promptly. So crap, his subframe is stripped, enter a slightly bigger bolt to save the day!
Couple quick stops to check that bolt and we are in Fish Creek
Crazy rock formation looked like bricks
Somewhere along the way I hear, "Your stuff is falling off" come through the comms... Ok no big deal I slow down then just as I stop, everything falls off. That could have been bad! Little did I know I would be fighting with a shifting load for the remainder of the trip.
Out to Split Mtn Road and up the Choo Choo road to the open area then cut across to the Blu Inn.
Along the way saw this guy
No gas at Blu Inn so cheeseburgers it is! Up poleline road to Salton City. Gas up at the Indian Casino then up and around the Salton Sea. Picked up some "Carne Asasa" in Mecca for dinner. I use the term "Carne Asada" very loosely, as I think it may have been dog, it was the toughest most horrible carne I have ever eaten.
On through Box Canyon then up to Chiriaco Summit for gas.
Down Red Canyon Jeep Trail to our camp along the Bradshaw Trail in Amy's Wash
More Bradshaw Trail, Bombing Ranges galore
Big bomb
Stopped at one of the Kiosks for some self timer action
Bradshaw Trail was also freshly bladed which made quick work of the mileage, side trip to the Palo Verde Opal Mine but we didnt go up to the mine or do any digging, fun road in though!
End of the Bradshaw Trail puts you at a cotton field
More gas then on through Palo Verde to the Colorado River, cool bridge but that sign doesn't instill much confidence
Once across we hit more dirt up to Eherinburg(Sp?) for more gas then on to the hopefull way through the mountains to Bouse AZ. Ended up my track was no good, went through the Colorado River Indian Reservation and they had fenced off the road. Crap! Now what? Well we can go back to Eherinburg then take the freeway to Quartsite then up the 95 to where we were supposed to come through the mountains. The freeway doesn't sound like fun. Only other option is slab it up to Parker. So thats what we do, 30 ish miles of slab then we are back on dirt for the most part all the way to Bouse.
We stay at a friends place in Bouse, bs around their fire pit, drink too many Coors Lights and call it a night. Next morning they make us a greatly needed pancake and snausage breakfast!
While packing the bikes I notice an oil puddle under my trusty steed
Turns out the shifter seal pushed itself out of place. Pushed it back in and all is well!
Time to explore, nice guided tour of the Bouse hills, old mining equipment
pit mine
Then it was on to Swansea, big cacti along the way
also a sweet natural arch
the deepest shaft we found there at Swansea, we estimated it at 600 feet
From Swansea it was north to the Bill Williams River which we needed to cross. First crossing was deep, but not too deep, around 2.5 feet. The second one however was deeper, around 3 ft. I made it through but boy does that deep water slow/stop your momentum. My buddy Jesse was not so lucky, he misjudged the water and ended up stalling right in the deep part, didnt fall over so his bike was ok, he was just soaked after pushing his beast of a 650 out of the water. Stopped so he could dry off a bit which would cost us some time. No issues leaving the Bill Williams valley but before we made it to the freeway the track ended up at a fenceline with a gate, but the gate was wired shut with barb wire. Normal etiquette is to leave gates how you find them, but we can't get this one open. We cant go back the way we came. Weirdly or luckily the fence was down in a few spots so thru one of them we go. Back to the grind the trail here is whooped out and not much fun, we are also losing daylight fast! Finally make it to the Flying J for more gas and since the daylight was just about gone we decided to skip the rest of the dirt track to Needles and just hop on the freeway. Saturday night traffic is super light thankfully. We get to Needles and decide that since we are both still wet, its a bad idea to camp in a place we might not be able to find firewood(not to mention there was a strong chance of rain projected for the area for that night) so we motel it.
Next day gas up and hit the Movaje Road, one group of bikes passed us as we were in a rough section and they found a smooth parallel road. They didn't have a load either, we kept up with them to the top of the grade where we stopped to take off our jackets. No real issues thru the Mojave, avoided the 12 miles of whoops, stopped to sign in at the mailbox and found an excellent surprise inside. Somewhere along the way my little green chair fell off may it rest in pieces. If someone sees it please pick it up, we do not know where or when it fell off or it would not have been left. We tread lightly!
On to the lava tubes! Our only real planned sightseeing stop
Left the lava tubes then on to Baker to gas up, hit gravel powerline roads north of the freeway that were supper slippy. More gas at Razor road. Somehow I manage to fall over in the parking lot. whoops!
From Razor Road we go through the OHV area back to the Mojave Road. Its really whooped out here so the going is slow. Buddy catches a bush with his boot and twists his knee a bit, hes hurt a bit but ok to keep going. Finally make it to Afton Canyon and the water crossings are small. Then we get to the softest, most evil never ending death sand I have ever had the displeasure of riding through. After many many near swap outs, it happens, I swap it out and go over the bars. At least the landing is soft. I hit my thigh on the bars as I go over, no big deal its just a bruise. More damn sand, miles and miles of damn sand. Did I mention how bad this sand was? Makes Fish Creek look like pavement
FINALLY!!! We get the hell out of that sand and head into Barstow for more gas.
Here is where we really screw up, my track has us skirting Big Bear and through Joshua Tree. Well we listened to my back up gps and ended up going all the way to Ludlow and through Amboy before coming into J-tree. The daffy bastard gps now wants us to go through Palm Desert and into Anza to get home. Screw that! Its freezing in J-tree and we are beat, dead tired. Been riding since 7AM and its 930PM. We are in survival mode at this point. Finally get thru J-tree and hit the 10 to go up to Beaumont then down Lambs Canyon through Hemet and finally down 79 back to Temecula, get home around 11:15 PM
I'll post up the projected GE track and the actual gpx track here shortly(unless I shouldn't?)
