Looking for mid-size adv ride partner/group

@jjjulien Welcome! I believe @moto_rph is near your neck of the woods but he is on the mend. @shutterrev likes to get out and ride, he has a 690 if I recall. Next Weds is the First Aid Training and could be a good opportunity to meet some folks and maybe take away a tidbit from the class.

    Sleeping bag or blanket?

To extend the life AND temperature range of your existing bag, consider a sleeping bag liner. There are a variety of options from $25 to $110. A liner can restore your old bag's temperature rating and/or extend it's service life. A more heavy duty liner can substitute as a very light sleeping bag / blanket for warm summer trips. This is a higher end one but it has the most reviews on the REI website, many of them are very positive. https://www.rei.com/product/797114/sea-to-summit-thermolite-reactor-extreme-sleeping-bag-liner

the @Mr.JAJA selfie is great! Good to see you out there and enjoying it. @shutterrev excellent sunset pic with the @tntmo CT Monster 125 @padu you're smiling in ever picture - awesome energy @DSM8 great pic of Green River, Utah. I may need to bribe you with burritos for info on that area for an upcoming trip. Looks similar to what @Bagstr and @PbdBlue rode from La Sal, Utah staying at the 3 Steps Hideaway: @Zubb that looks like a big low tide in San Quintin. We'll see how many swigs of "medicine" it takes before we pry Secret Spot info out of you! @moto_rph excellent contribution! how are you healing up? @Pokey151 is that the water near Bee Canyon? @350thumper I'm sure you have some great desert sunset pics to share! @paulmbowers that's a classic pic of the dustman @Covered in Dust. Maybe you and @DSM8 know, aren't permits are now required for White Rim Trail? (unsure if they were in the past)
  8. Besides tires, our feet are the next most common part to touch the ground while riding. From stop lights to trail photo opportunities to the impromptu foot dab in a corner, our feet and ankles can carry the weight and momentum of us on our bikes. Broken ankles, tibulas and fibias are all too common. I’ve seen a rider break his foot right in front of me - it can happen fast. PPE won’t prevent ALL injuries but quality high protection boots can and will help. On the market today, Motocross boots have the highest protection. “Adventure” boots are marketed for a more casual coffee shop look and marginal walkability gains but they compromise top level protection. I think the advertised “ease of break-in” isn’t worth breaking your foot in them! I largely agree with most of this video below. I would still take the moto / SG12 style above the one he recommends. Also the Obenauf’s products he mentions are top notch, check out their oil and heavy duty preserve. I personally use both: Obenauf's Leather Conditioner - Leather Oil https://a.co/d/bV09AV2 Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP Leather Preservative https://a.co/d/ahT8hxe

14/44 is same as 15/47 Since you have the 44 rear installed, it’s easier to swap the front sprocket to experiment. For summer riding / faster & smoother fire roads 15/44 is great. Come winter if you are trucking to the desert maybe 14/44 would be a fun trial.
  14. Yes! And it was a Yamaha YZ250 that made it history this year: It was the first 2 stroke in 17 years to qualify for a 450 Supercross Main Event and it happened twice! https://dirtbikemagazine.com/inside-jared-leshers-sx-built-yz250-two-stroke/ @tntmo didn’t you see this guy at Houston? @Wintyfresh do you still have your YZ250?

Adventure Bike Truth: Marketing vs Reality

Let’s talk safety and practicality for the Typical “ADV” bike purchaser today. (you know, the ones that marketing teams salivate over) Gravel Touring bikes weigh a lot. The average rider will expel more energy riding rough terrain and their endurance will become drained. A tired rider is an unsafe rider. Gravel Touring bikes weigh a lot. If a bike is too heavy to pick up solo you shouldn’t be riding it in any dirt situation. One crash quickly accelerates into others and causes exponential problems. If you need to ride with others to help pick up your bike, you are compromised. Gravel Touring bikes weigh a lot. Simply put, when they fall, they fall harder. This puts more strain on the body during a foot dab or crash and results in more injuries to the rider. Gravel Touring bikes weigh a lot. They are harder on clutches and drivetrains. Riders get stranded all over with totally burnt up clutches and cracked cast wheels. Gravel Touring bikes weigh a lot. They have oversized motors meant for the interstate. Big motors = big speed = big wrecks. Sorry folks but you can’t put lipstick on a pig. Oh wait!

You can use a sharpie and mark on tooth then rotate the wheels / chain and count the teeth. This works well enough on the front. On the rear the # of teeth is often stamped on the sprocket. Gearing can really change power delivery: bottom end grunt vs more fwy speed.

A @DSM8 tech day would be great! @Caleb_Linden if you’re on a budget and bottoming out your suspension, fork springs and adding 15ml of fork oil are cheap mods you can do in a weekend. We could help you set your sag and increase rear preload. If you load the bike with camping gear extra preload or a rear spring can help if you’re bottoming / sagging out the rear.

Adventure Bike Truth: Marketing vs Reality

I am no Eli Tomac nor Toby Price - neither is anybody here. That said it’s a fact more motocross and enduro bikes are actually ridden in their appropriate environment than big bikes are compared to the markering hype. For the average consumer buying today’s big bikes they have been tricked into overestimating their own capabilities by compelling advertising.
