Tourist Visa?
Andrewdavis34 replied to StevoDaDevo's topic in Baja Info, Upcoming Rides, Ride Reports, Photos, etc.
I was down near Loreto, then over to the Pacific side camping with my family for almost two weeks in early Jan of this year. We did not bother getting Visas this trip. In fact the office was closed when we rolled by at 9:00 am in the morning southbound. They were open on the way north and did not ask for them . They share a spot on Mex 1 with the agricultural office which sprays the bottom of your car. Both officials were very polite and just chatted with my wife. Fortunately she speaks fluent Spanish. I have made 4-5 trip south of Guerro Negro in the last 3 years and never been asked for a visa. I think this is a low priority for the Mexican government at this time. They are trying to make travel as painless as possible. If for whatever reason you were to get stopped and required to get your visa. You can buy them there. -
BONITA to TECATE for lunch!
Andrewdavis34 replied to JohnnyAirtime's topic in 1 to 3 Day Ride Write-Ups, Stories and Photos
Looks like fun. I am still trying to piece the section from where you came out on HWY 94 through Tecate Peak into town. So far not having much luck staying in the dirt. Most of the hills off the main rodes that the BP uses are just to steep on the southern slopes My friend and I got kicked off the the border fence section that you took home last time we rode out there a few weeks ago. I was just in Tecate a week or so and found a nice short cut into the line. It is west of where you entered. If interested PM me and I will provide waypoint. Andrew -

South of San Felipe March 1-3
Andrewdavis34 posted a topic in Baja Info, Upcoming Rides, Ride Reports, Photos, etc.
Had a great trip down south of San Felipe last weekend (March 1-3)with my dad. Plans were to head south to Gonzaga. Due to wind on the way down things got a little challenging from the wind and my dad needed to slow down a bit. Ended up going taking Mex 3 across from Ensenada to Mex 5 then south to San Felipe. No gas in Oso Negros/Heros de Indepencia. Via de Trinidad has gas, as do points south. Ended up camping south of San Felipe on the beach. North Bound trip was again very windy and with my dad being getting hit with a full blow cold did not make for a fun return trip. We decided that it would be best to stay in Mexico and take the toll road west to avoid the mountains here in San Diego as well as avoid the high speed interstate driving. This was a good choice. I would highly recommend taking the toll road if entering at Tecate/Otay if San Felipe is your destination. It is very scenic drive. This is of course if staying on pavement. My dad is 78 now and is fine with sticking to the roads. Here a few pictures: -

Ride Suggestions for Larger Bikes at McCain Valley/Lark
Andrewdavis34 posted a topic in Informal Local Rides & Who's Going Riding!
Hi all, I am considering heading out to McCain Valley/Lark Canyon this weekend on Saturday as plan B if the ride I am planning in the Lagunas doesn't work out. I have never been out to McCain Valley/Lark canyon and was wondering if there is any riding out there suitable for larger DS bikes? All the ride reports that I have seen have been done on smaller bikes. Thanks, Andrew -

Thanks to everyone that has replied to my inquiry. I really appreciate the advise. I will be riding out to McCain valley via Hwy 94. Plan is to meet at the Junction of Hwy94/Otay Lakes Road at 0945 +/- 10 minutes. I will be riding a somewhat dirt oriented 2009 Red KLR650. Will be riding with several others riding KLR's. Andrew -

Pryo, Mike is having a tech day at the shop next weekend o n 15 oct. He had a mig welder there at the last tech day. The upgraded foot pegs mounts would be pretty easy. I think I might have some flat stock here at the house. I will be at the tech day next weekend. If worse comes to worse I have the equipment needed to do this job including a mig welder.

Hi all, I just returned from Yosemite on 4/14 and was hoping to spend a few days riding there with my family. Unfortunately still way too much snow. In the Fish Camp area there is still 6-8 feet. I was really bummed as I had hoped to do some riding in the area. Hopefully things will change in a few months. Andrew -
Ride Otay on Thursday morning
Andrewdavis34 replied to SICVIC's topic in Informal Local Rides & Who's Going Riding!
If you want to go up the west side here are the direction. -Head east on 905 -Once past the 125 stay in the left hand lane and continue east. -The road will dead end at Alta Road with a stop sign go left. -You will see a power plant on your ride hand side heading toward the prison. -At northern boundry of power plant there will be a road go right. -At end of road there is a gate that is usually opened during the day that is used by the border patrol. -Once on dirt head north to the main road then make a right at main junction and head up the mountain. Once you reach the summit you will have two additional route that you can take back down. -#1 is the north road which will take you down to thousand trails down onto Otay Lakes Road. -#2 east road will take you down to Marrion Valley Road once at the bottom of the hill make a Left on Marrion Valley which will lead you HWY 94. All of these roads are about the same difficulty rating and have similar terrian. If you want additional information to extend the ride farther east of Marrion Valley road out toward Tectate let me know and I will provide some tracks for you. Have fun and be safe if you decide to ride it again let me know and I'll join us. I live about 15 minutes away in Chula Vista. Andrew -

Hi all, I am intested in maybe checking out Oriflamme Canyon on Monday 21 Feb. I have never done this route before. I figured out the way from the desert floor off S-2 which I could easily do. I am trying to figure out the best way to do it coming going down from the mountains. I understand there are numerous possiblilities from the mountains.(Banner, Mason Valley, Road off Sunrise Hwy) What is the best route if I decide to do in from the mountains to the desert? I am on KLR 650. Thanks, Andrew

Hi, I would be interested in checking out Oriflamme Canyon. Boulder Creek would work too. I rode that area several weeks ago from Delzula and the graded road is pretty smooth. Andrew -
Green Stickered bikes on Otay Mountain
Andrewdavis34 posted a topic in 1 to 3 Day Ride Write-Ups, Stories and Photos
Hi all, I have a friend that is interested in buying a Honda CRF250x. Is Otay Mountain and the surrounding area toward Campo/Tecate open to Green stickered bikes?.I have ridden up there many times on my TW200 which I recently sold( Currently in the market for a KLR650) and never paid too much attention as most of my friends have dual sports. Thanks, Andrew -
Need help wtih direction getting to Santa Veronia to Laguna Hanson
Andrewdavis34 posted a topic in Baja Info, Upcoming Rides, Ride Reports, Photos, etc.
Hi all, I am planning on taking a trip maybe down to Laguna Hanson this weekend. I have several friends that will be parking on their truck on the US side in Tecate and driving there non plated bikes to Santa Veronica. My question is does anybody know the distance from El Hongo to the Lake and back?. Both of my friends bikes have stock tanks and I am not sure they will have the range. Both will be riding Honda CRF250X's. Also what loop is more fun via El Hongo or La Rumorosa? Does anybody have a track log that they would be willing to share. Thanks, Andrew -
Non plated bikes in Baja
Andrewdavis34 posted a topic in Baja Info, Upcoming Rides, Ride Reports, Photos, etc.
Hi all, I have a friend that is considering buying a Honda CFR250x. I know these bikes cannot be plated here in California. I was wondering if they are legal to drive on the highway down in Baja. I would like to take him down to Gonzaga Bay via LH-San Feliope-Gonzaga then back to Mex 1-Tecate. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks! Andrew -
Green Stickered bikes on Otay Mountain
Andrewdavis34 replied to Andrewdavis34's topic in 1 to 3 Day Ride Write-Ups, Stories and Photos
Thanks to everyone that has posted regarding this inquiry. I have seen the OHV signs myself but have always been on the mountain with plated bikes. My friend is dead set on the Honda CRF250X. This leave few areas to ride in locally here in SD county. Looks like we will be going to Baja allot unless he can get the bike plated. Regards, Andrew
