Cabala's in El Cajon - good idea - maybe a Bass Pro Shop! I did a stint at camp Chem-weenie from 2000 to 2005 in the Maintenance dept. Rode my three-wheeled bike around on third-shift and fixed stuff. Good luck with the election

    crazy russian guy

Lane splitting opposing traffic I get scared when guys pass my car like that. Even more scared when they pass my bike. Talk about approach speeds

    Can my bike handle it?

You must have sailed home with that gearing. Did you do it in one day? Glad to hear that you made it safe. The question is "would you do it again??"
  4. Just riding by and saw all the cool bikes - Figured the Viffer could handle most the dirt roads out of Ramona. Thanks for letting me tag along part of the way. I cut off at Black Canyon toward Lake Sutherland to continue my trek to Julian.

    Can my bike handle it?

The Idea is good if everything goes well - it sounds like a great adventure and I am sure the SXC would dutifully go along with your plan. The concern is your lack of freeway experience and also the low gearing of the bike. The normal speed on Hwy 1 is more than 50mph. Riding any bike on the freeway takes some getting used to. To begin with you may select a smaller trip or more freeway friendly bike. If you do chose to do this consider good mirrors, and tall gearing. Allow two days travel or more. Also have a backup plan to bailout if you are not having a good time. Maybe leave a few hours ahead or your van buddy? I have rode my SXC up to 160 miles on freeway in a day on MT21 tires. It was fine in areas where traffic was slow. However when traffic speeds picked up it was more unnerving. Cruising at 70 to 75 was fine for the bike(tall gearing) but cars were flying by like bullets. Yes my but was sore after 160 miles. I can offer a bailout point at San Onofre depending on what day you come down - but that would still mean riding thru LA

    Next Maintenance Gathering September 26th

Thanks Roger and Ted for taking time out from the Maintenance day to recover my nephews bike - Anyone want to buy a GSXR 1000 with 21,000 miles and a scraped up fairing?
  7. Here is a new thread based on an ADVrider thread that I sometimes follow http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=447282 I have tried before to start threads but they usually fail here. Look for my sightings thread! Some threads have done ok - doggie thread, Kawi picture thread, but many threads get hijacked. Feel free to Hijack here And no BS thread does not mean the Bike Slut thread - sorry Bob! Feel free to let this thread die!

Maybe if I dust off the KTM someone can show me how to change the fork seals? anyway I will let you know soon as my wife will tell me what is happining Sunday. Ken - if I go I will PM or call you to find out what to bring. I will bring one good item to donate == Are you going to do a raffle?
  9. Burnt out on it......I could see that after a few years, it's a long way up there. but, the positive is.....whoever helps, gets to know and ride the area really well and often ! I think that it is best to focus on our own backyard - anything past Big Bear is tough. Maybe a hybrid - offer help and co-host it.

SDAR BS Thread (AKA Hijack on!)

I am not that sensitive - I like it when my posts get hijacked. That means someone actually read them. My comment was how many threads get Hijacked and go way off topic. Thought of this thread when I was hijacking the garage sale thread.

SDAR BS Thread (AKA Hijack on!)

Sorry Slut - Just busy throwing up after reading this thread. I will edit the rules out of the first post - That way you guys won't worry about breaking them. Today I rode the Honda to work, but someday I need to get the KTM out again (KTM = keep throwing money)

    Motorhome advice

I do - I live life as if the following people were following me all the time: a LEO, park Ranger, CHP, IRS Agent, Homeland Security Officer (or BP agent), My Boss at work, My boss at home (wife), My boss when related to the kids (ex-wife), my 15 year-old daughter (she will snitch me out), the city's code enforcement officer, Fellow adv riders / sdar folks, the community service officer, the RSVP cop in the white car, etc... Anyway just keep in mind price points - RVs are easy to buy and hard to sell. How much can you lose on a 2k RV like mine? If you are into payments, that can work - Like I did on my 27'-C. Or you could be flush with cash and buy a diesel pusher. Maybe renting one would be a good option to try it out. Don't be afraid to offer way under the asking price on the rig you are looking at - the worst they could say is no. Buy towing insurance no matter what rig you get

    Motorhome advice

I have had a few: Shells, Cabovers, trailers, Class-Cs,& class-As. My favorite was my 27' 91 Class C, 460. I had it in 2000 (9 years old) with 30k miles. It had split twins in the back for the kids. Mom and dad stayed in the overhead bunk. It pulled a 98 Jeep just fine and was perfect for beach trips, Yosemite and other state parks (I told them it was 25'! to get it in). With young kids traveling there was no comparison to my cabovers or trailers that proceeded it. Yes the wife could feed the kids, and me, use the restroom, and put the kids to bed all while traveling. It was the best size, I like the sleeping capabilities of a class c, but I always worried about the weight capacity of the 16" tires. Never had trouble with good tires. Anyway stay away from most rear bath units - having a little longer coach with the center bath and rear bedroom works well for sharing the coach with kids or guest. But don't bother with a 31' Class C (too big for a c-coach) V-10s have mixed reviews - some seem to last forever, others don't. Basement model class cs are great - but rare. Look into the coach construction - metal- frame vs wood, chassis type E350, E450, Jhon Deere, Workhorse, etc. Coachman is on the low end of Fleetwood from what I remember but the Fleetwood coaches became better thru the years. Tioga's are higher end - or Holiday ramblers. Stay away from older non-fuel injected engines - unless the coach is super cheap (and thats what you want). Try to buy a coach that has never been used for towing and was taken care of. Hacked up motorhomes are a pain - wait all motorhomes can be a pain. I bought my C for 25k used and sold it for 18k 3 years later - it was worth it. Better then the 39' Class A diesel pusher that I had for 2 years and sold for way less than I paid. Currently I have a 1978 33' Class A Vogue - it is a wilderbeast. I would prefer a 27-28' fuel injected Class C. And BTW the only coachs that I sold for what I paid were Cheap cabovers, & travel trailers. I never wanted a toybox since I never had luck sleeping where I hauled my off-road vehicles. My campershells and enclosed trailer always smelled like gas when I got to the campsite. And I have used both as campers.

  21. I once owned a house behind a basketball court at a park in Lemon Grove. All the F-n guys had cool names like "Snake". Maybe I should go back to being Paul since no-one (not even fake-name) wanted my username of Paul. Yes Pyro is Pyro - not just Troy, Carguy is Carguy - and John, BS is a big Slut! Xr650bum a bum, gunner is a chief, BBg can't BBQ, Papa is in, Joliet is Joliet aka Ken, Schwinn is the sammmiwich king, Mimi is Mimi - I mean DD, Crawdaddy is (starts with a C), DSfox is a fox, and Hedley is the creator of our site... etc... 2 names can be a problem when we meet at a ride or post, but that is part of the beauty of the community. The more that we participate the more we come to know our fellow riders. Just remember one name or another. Fake or otherwise. Establish rules before you ride together. Where are your ICE contacts, Who is riding sweep, at each turn we will wait for the last rider, If we need to break our group apart due to speed and skill levels we will discuss it - not just ditch a couple of Newbees. Anyway just leave the "real name" out of the post. Call me KIP, or Bond or Ferris, or Snake if that is what I wish to post as. As I have switched from a rotating 12 hour shift there my be more opportunities to join group rides and aquaint myself with more of the active users out there. Not as may usernames as ADVrider!
