  1. Goofy Footer, No, I have not seen that mine but would like to. I'm riding a KTM 790 Adventure R. It makes me look like I know how to ride.
  2. Goofy Footer, Thanks for passing the link about my trailer builder too J5ive. I still have that trailer. I haven’t been on this site for quite a while, just doing other things. Thanks to your passing on the link I came here to see what was going on and discovered the Noobs Rally was March 22-26. I have been planning to ride that weekend in Death Valley with some friends for months ito celebrate my 70th birthday.(March 27). I’m going to sign up for the rally and maybe I will see you and J5ive there. John

    Riding Arizona

A friend and I are hauling 25 bicycles to the White Mountain Apache Indian reservation in Whiteriver, Az for a 4th of July give away. Lucky for us, the trailer has room for 2 DRZ's as well. We are staying for 5th and 6th to ride the local mountains. Does anyone know where there would be good riding in the area of Show Low, Eagar, Hannagan Meadows, etc? If there are tracks available I would appreciate knowing where to find them. Thanks, John
  5. The front rim on my DRZ has three nice size dents expertly pressed in by various rocks in the local area AND it's warped side-to-side by about .080". I want to try lacing on a new rim. My question is what rim is the best bang for the buck (pun intended)? Do I need to replace the spokes (none appear to be damaged or corroded and the nipples turn reasonably freely. Is there some magic to lacing rims that I should know about? If I should fail to make it work, where is the best place to have them fix up my screw up (think north, I'm in LA)? Thanks, John
  6. Leaving now for DV now. The group camp will be available @ 2 pm Thursday. See you there!
  7. All, I reserved a 2 person tent cabin for a riding buddy on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights but he isn't able to make it. If anyone is interested, let me know otherwise I need to cancel the reservation first thing Tuesday morning. $105 for the three nights. John 626-533-1352
  8. Flexfab, Thanks for grabbing a site, I'll buy you dinner. Since the speed limit is 55 we aren't going to be screaming down the highway. I assume that they still enjoy writing tickets out there. I would pick Friday for the Titus run only because I would expect more traffic on Saturday and Thursday I want to be back in the 3-4pm range to get setup at the group site. I would do a tour at Scotty's if it fit our schedule. You're welcome to take my DRZ. I want to see how well I do with the KLR on the sandy roads down Titus otherwise I would have only brought the DRZ. I'll have tools with me if you want to do a sprocket change. Kato & HotRod82, Sorry you aren't able to make it. John 626-533-1352
  9. Flexfab, You know the area well so if you don't mind the "tour guide" mode I'll leave it up to you. Most of the mines I've read about are on the southeast side and doing those when camping in Stovepipe Wells or Tecopa would be a better plan. And I agree, headlamp, extra flashlight, and extra battery. I want to do Panamint to Beatty (for gas) to Titus to Scottys Castle to Ubehebe crater and back to Panamint. 64 miles to Beatty and 140 for the rest of it and it's all slab except for Titus. I'm thinking of bringing the KLR for that ride. Google Maps says that it will take 5:45 which probably means 8-9 hours with stops for gas, food, dirt naps, and pictures. I'm going to come through Trona and will arrive around midnight Wednesday night. I have no idea where I'm going to park and sleep since we don't get the group campsite until somewhere around 2pm on Thursday. Just FYI for everyone. It appears that someone has rented the group site for Sunday which means we will have to vacate the site by 11am Sunday morning. John
  10. Bump! Still plenty of room at the group camp for tents.

Schwinn, Thank you for the offer but I drove it down to Dan yesterday. He will pass it on to the EMT's. Life is good! John

    Escondido Handoff

Does anyone live in/near Escondito? I have a backboard and medical supplies for the Desert Dash that need to make their way to Randy. I'm going to be at the California Adventure Riders meeting this afternoon in Escondido and since I live in Arcadia, it would be an opportune time to hand it off to someone who could either take it with them to the Dash or pass it on to Randy. Thanks, John 626-533-1352

Goofy, There are one or two collars in the O2 bag so they should be good. Danrider, OMG I'm going senile, I just looked at the invitation and it's on March 1, not today. I have to go to Costa Mesa anyway so lets do it. Because of the plan change I can meet you anywhere or bring it by your house. I would choose to do this later in the day if that works for you.

    Escondido Handoff

Excellent, I'll be there by 12. Are you attending the meeting or just stopping by to pick up the equipment? ADV Bum, Thanks for the offer but it looks like we've got it handled. Enjoy the DD. Hopefully they won't have to use this stuff on anybody. John

Yes, small bottle, regulator, a variety of masks, and bag. And a backboard if he needs it. I'll be at On the Border, 298 E Via Rancho Pkwy, Escondido, CA from 12 - 2 today. I can bring it by after the meeting.
  16. Absolutely! I'll know my schedule better in a few weeks. I may arrive late on the 4th just to get in a solid day of riding on the 5th. I haven't made any ride plans yet but mines are on my mind. With good lights this time.
  17. I don't think they're concerned with the motorcycles as long as we're good guests.
  18. I actually have the group site on the 5th as well. I'm planning on arriving around noon on the 5th and doing a little riding. Everyone is welcome to camp in the group site, they will allow as many tents as you can fit but only 10 cars on the outside perimeter. Extra cars are $5 per night. The showers and restrooms are relatively nice. The group site does have power for charging your electronics. There is no landline or cell phone service at Panamint. If you haven't been, It's better than you've heard.
  19. Tim, The group site at Panamint is not available on Friday the 13th so I submitted a request for the nights of the 5th thru 7th, leaving on the 8th. Figured I better grab something before some other group gets it. Plenty of time to get a refund if you pick a different weekend. John
  20. Wow, according to the Panamint website there is NOTHING available. No rooms, no campsites for March 26 - 28th
  21. My wife and I are in Kentucky at the HWY 127 "Worlds Longest Yard Sale". It is a mix of everything. I thought it might be a little backwoods but I saw this cutting edge motorcycle I really liked but my wife said I can't bring it back on the plane so I passed it up. Well I missed out on that buy of the century. Hmmmmmm, If I can't get a motorcycle maybe I can get something smaller like a scooter. I found this treasure. Once again, It won't fit in the overhead storage so I passed. We're only on day 2 with 2 more to go. What a hoot!
  22. I loaned my daughter my SPOT Connect to go to Machu Picchu, Peru. I got their check-in from the airport in Washington DC and it never sent another message no matter what they tried. While in Peru someone stole the SPOT along with her iPhone so I need a replacement. Needless to say, SPOT is not at the top of my list. I'm looking at the inReach Explorer that uses the Iridium system which supposedly has 100% coverage of the planet (I assume this includes Peru). The yearly service contract would be $300 (gag) but you can send and receive messages which is a plus along with the standard tracking, etc, etc, etc. Anyone have one of these or experience with one? A better alternative? I've looked at the PLB's but I really want to have the tracking and messaging feature. It keeps my wife from worrying too much. http://www.inreachdelorme.com/product-info/inreach-explorer.php?promotion=ps0214&gclid=Cj0KEQjwxZieBRDegZuj9rzLt_ABEiQASqRd-rPAlYDpdTMSm4HcKSFQvgVRdKgBDTnb9WW0vBUTFx8aAnDE8P8HAQ
