  1. I second that ... a great group and a great ride!

After a morning warm-up we split the group, most continuing on to the most difficult section. We met a group of quaders who kept saying we were on the most difficult trail in the area. Of course, they also kept saying, "this is the last really gnarly hill-climb". NOT!

I love that technical challenging stuff anyway, so it was all good. We had an uphill section and a water crossing that each took about a half hour to get through. Lots of bull-dogging and pushing going on. Left at 10 am and back around 5, so a 7 hour outing. Including the fire roads we only did a total of 50 miles for the day. So there was some slooow going ...

Considering the terrain, I too was impressed with those riding new machines ... nice job!

Thanks to Doug for the trail snacks, and to Rob for the beer upon return, and to Ken for that life-saving sandwich ... and more beers ;)

  2. John's Dakar website is race2dakar.com

I started off with a nice amount donated to his race effort in the name of San Diego Adventure Riders. ...

... donation saying you're with SDAR, and I believe our name and the individuals who donate directly, will be listed as sponsors

Randy, I know how much you donated for the group. Will John be willing to list SDAR here?:

    http://www.race2dakar.com/SPONSORS.html

Hopefully he can name the link "San Diego Adventure Riders", not the url of "dualsport-sd.com"

  3. should have the Endurance computer delivered/installed by this weekend
I have an Endurance you may have if you wish. It came off my buddy's bike after he decided he absolutely hated it. Have no experience with it myself, but even TrailTech does not push that model. My buddy and I both mounted the Lynx (Here on my 525) and love them.

Trailtech has since updated the Lynx, increasing the display size by eliminating "Enduro Mode" which no one used unless competing in Enduro racing. It has a feature that was an absolute MUST for me: You can reset to trip odo by 1/10ths for dual sport rides with roll-charts, i.e., Desert Dash, No Wimps, etc. If you fly past your turn & must double-back, your odo reading is now wrong. If you can't correct this until the next odo re-set, you're then doing math in your head. For me this equals not paying enough attention to the trail, equals crashing, equals getting lost again. Being able to correct the odo at any time is important. I also like the Lynx hooking directly to the battery, Endurance does not. They also offer a cool Magnesium case for it ...

  4. I'm impressed that you're a self motivated life-time female rider. The new Husky purchase shows a dedication to something you love to do. You're right about riding alone so glad you've found us. You will find absolutely no shortage of riders & rides to enjoy, so welcome to SDAR!

  5. I now have a Kodak easy share camera. It was hard for my wife to get good air photos because of the picture delay

There is no picture delay on the Kodak Easy Share ... you just have to know how to do it and you'll get the best pictures ever!

First, set the camera on multiple exposure. It is probably the same button as the self timer, so you might have to push it twice.

Then, have her point the focus frames at an object or the ground that is apx the same distance away as you will be when jumping. Push the button half way down to lock in that distance. At that point the focus is determined as well as the exposure setting (the stuff that takes so long). Keep holding the button to not lose those settings.

Now when you go flying by she can push the button fully and keep holding it down. The screen will go black but by "guessing" she can pan with the camera attempting to follow your movement. You will get instantaneous multiple exposure to highlight your every flaw

  6. I understand that some local shops may support our sport & are therefore listed in the new forum Prefered Merchants. I also know that beyond our standard level of appreciation for this, there will be certain misgivings about certain shops for various reasons that may be discussed here in this forum. We also encounter good experiences at some shops that should be shared as well.

Overall I have very good experience with Motoworld of El Cajon. I have not used their shop but will certainly try them now that they handle KTM. Their accessory dept. run by Geoff King is exceptional. I also just ordered 3 KTM parts that they OFFERED to let me pay for when picking them up rather than ahead of time. GREAT service!

I have not been to All American KTM in a couple years since being lied to, and several of my friends & I experiencing serious shop violations. Perhaps they're better now?

My favorite place for rubber replacement is Kenny at Santee Motorcycle Supply. I also like supporting a small local merchant.

Rocket Motorcycles is arrogant beyond belief and insulting at every opportunity. They have also recently lost the only reason to go there, i.e., the 2 best KTM mechanics in town.

Kon-Tiki is now run by the son ... yes, Alex from Rocket (great mechanic) has now taken over Pop's business, bringing KTM & Triumph wrenching skills with him. Just did the first service on my new Tiger ... top notch!

Another good local shop is San Diego Sport Cycles. They're the closest shop to my house and have good experiences there. They also buy a big block of well placed Suprecross tickets every year, so that's handy.

Although I don't have too much 1st hand experience with GP or SD BMW, I've hear some very nice reports about both.

I don't have a lot of new experience with House of Motorcycles since it changed hands. The experience I've had hasn't been good. They also cut off the Red Hot Riders for discounts in favor of a younger sport group. I guess they had more $.

Quincy in Lemon Grove is know for good bike discounts. They are also known for a shop that few would trust. I've had some work done there on my FJR, but wouldn't want to entrust my KTMs.

Fun Bike ... well, I think it's been said quit enough ...

I'm no too sure if this forum is meant to be a catch-all for comments like this, but some may wish to start individual threads focussing on each local shop, including the good & bad experiences. But for now, it is what it is :o:(

  7. Gonna show it off at RHR tomorrow night?

Super heavy schedule today ... we'll hope to see you there

Those Triumphs are very nice machines, congrats.

I agree. Outside of needing a Wilbers shock & perhaps some fork word to suite our 2up madness, the bike is amazing. Since I'm an old man who likes to ride comfortably upright, with pillion, scraping pegs & keep up with my sport group ... this Tiger is purr-fect. Very happy!

We'd like to do an extended "USA" trip in '08 ... this could be the beast for it ...

  8. Funny how quickly things can change. A couple years ago I would visit the site to see if anything was new, and nothing was. Quite often the most recent post would be days or weeks old.

Radly boy & Cameron have kept up the pace, pushing a melting snow ball toward the drop. Now there are so many active members keeping things going that the site has become a real useful meeting place.

Randy has mentioned to me several times how much he appreciates the support you all give the site.

  9. John on his Elefant from the Lucky Explorer Ride in the High Sierra, 2006.

What are the chances that just 2 days prior to receiving John's Dakar announcement I would post that photo with other LER pics in Best Shots (2nd post) ...

Last night during our weekly meeting, we round-tabled ways to raise $ as a group. Many good ideas were forthcoming, and some downright generous offers. One guy said he would give $500, but that coulda been the beer talking :) We'll let him just pitch in like the rest of us ...

Here's the idea I like the best:

Design a T shirt with the Dakar logo / John on it / etc. Go see John since he only lives in Mission Viejo, & have John sign the shirts. I think it would be cool to do this a day or two before he leaves as a send-off. The high-dollar shirt contributions would have already been collected and given to John.

I'd pitch in 50 bucks for a shirt like that, knowing I'm over paying, but it's an opportunity to contribute as well.

  10. What are all your favorite bikes and why? I'd also like to hear input on riding apparel as I'll need some cooler gear or I'll die of heat. This would be for both offroad and for road.

    /Fred

    Welcome aboard, Fred!

It's great you have the big bike. There's a few of us here, our president included, who run some of the big stuff. If you buy a dual-sport, keep the GS or replace it with another beast. There's just something about the big bikes that's hard to explain unless you ride one. I was just invited to Baja by some friends who all ride KTM 525s, yet I can't stop thinking about bringing the KTM 950. Funny, since I also have a 525 :D

  11. So I just wait until the person comes right up to me, have a quick chat, and then move on.

Since I find that being in a hurry to get off can lead to mistakes (both by me, and the follower) and I'm just going to be sitting still longer at the next split anwyay....

Well how about you just give me the HP2 and we'll call it even? Seriously, I think it could make your life more gratifying ... so think about it

You can wait for a rider to catch up and chat, but he'll likely wait a while after you leave so he's not eating your dust. Doing this at every turn can add a lot of time to a ride. It also can be quite hot and uncomfortable sitting still rather than keeping cool by constantly moving. Quite often the approaching rider can make eye contact WAY before he gets to you. Exchanging waives keeps the ride time less, solves the dust eating problem, and regulates body temperature better.

  12. Brett and I rode a Nasty trail called the John Bull trail in Big Bear. Brett is Crazy when it comes to Gnarly trails

    Toona

    God that's funny!

You know, before you posted I was looking at those photos, but decided they didn't compare to "Radical-Rad".

That was a great trip! I remember mustering up the courage for that vertical drop. We regretted not taking pictures of the REALLY TOUGH STUFF , but it's indelibly imprinted in my mind. I wanna go back, dude ...
