  1. I wear my knee/shin guards inside of my Thor Quandrants. The pants can fit over the top of my knee, allowing me to lend my knee pads to somebody  if they need them. The Thors SUCK for hiking, however, so I may need some other boots for "adventures". I have a unhealed patella fracture, so knee pads are not really an option until I have it fixed.

  2. maybe in the spring- I've got the pad for it- small moto track out front, pool, jacuzzi and BBQ out back, foos, air hockey, darts, rock wall and pool table in the garage. And I work for a brewer so beer flows. feel free to prod me again after rainy season.

  3. we do day trips to Lark Canyon- it's less than an hour from Alpine. I have a pick-up and an enclosed trailer, and we generally go out Sunday afternoons after most of the adults have packed up. I have had a couple of close calls with the kids on some of the interior trails. I'll post here when I am going out (plan on a couple of weeks anyway) and make it a kids day. I don't have extra helmets, but enough small bikes and a quad to let anyone get a feel for riding on the dirt. My kids started at 4 and 6, so she should be ready to try.

  4. Nah- It's baby wait

We are having labor induced on the 19th, but babies have no manners, and don't care much for riding plans...

I'll let ya'll know when he's here... THEN it'll be baby watch for a few weeks.

anybody else have kids that ride? I have a 49cc quad, TTR50, XR70 and TTR125 along with 2 boys that ride really well. After the baby is a few months old, we'll start going out again as a family, so if anybody has kids that ride, or kids that WANT to ride, post here and we can work something out. Lark Canyon has some really fun trails, and a big open area for monitoring the little ones. Plus, it's mostly sand in the open area, so crashes don't hurt.

  5. Joliet-

That sounds bad... Is your jetting stock? You're right about the battery, it doesn't have much juice at all; shoot, turn the bike upside down for about 10 minutes, foul the plug, and try to start it for about 4 minutes and the damn thing leaves you stranded in a ditch.

Since my re-jet, the bike starts 100% better; I'm glad to help anybody on the forum with the re-jet... I'm on baby watch, so it has to be at my house in Alpine.

www.thumpertalk.com has a great jetting forum in the DRZ section. Burned has the DRZ jetting figured out to a T

  6. sandiegoland; you have the 3x3 mod and jetting change, right? When I did mine, it made a huge difference in starting... and this sounds counterintuitive, but since the mod, unless it's REALLY cold, I don't need the choke at all.

Before the mods, it was: choke all the way out, no throttle and fire it up... then it dies, then fire it up again with no throttle, and it sets at a high idle for about 10 seconds then starts revving higher, at which time I can close the choke.

  7. The pilot quoted $800 based on the GPS coordinates given... He said if it was more than an hour, he would "eat the cost" above $800... lucky for me he was a better pilot than navigator. He told me later that he misjudged where the bike was, and it took him almost 2 hours.

I got another quote from BlackHawk Helicopters out of Gillespie Field. He said his small chopper was down, or else, he could do it for $800 too... his next smallest bird was $975 an hour... and he " does this sort of thing ALL THE TIME"?! He was very eager to take the job if the other deal fell through... so if any of you are "adventurous" (my new word for stupid) enough to need a lift, call them.

Cherry Helicopters was the guy that did the work... he now has good karma.

Craig... I believe my quote was, " it was ALMOST worth it" $800 buys a lot of toys...

  8. Iwouldn't consider this a ride report, but it was fun.

Paaplex, Motobro and I met at the Chevron Station in Alpine, then headed up the Viejas Grade. Mildly dusty road for a few miles, with some awesome views of the casino and valley. In to Descanso, we took Oak Canyon or something paved Road down to another dirt road for a few miles... far more enjoyable way to ascend to the pines. Then Engineers Road down to the meeting place. After some S-1 and Banner Grade twisties, we went to Rodriguez, Chariot, Oriflamme Etc. Nice mix of rider skills, and speeds. Some dirt, some sand and some rrrrrrrocks as we approached Mason Valley Truck Trail or something. The group split up then, with Sandiegoland, Carguy and Paaplex proceeding on... The rest of us headed back another dirt trail. It was a little dusty, but as before. Motobro and ste63 clogging my air filter back up to the hi way. (ste63- I was pulling sand out of my gums)

No mechanicals to speak of (overheated rear brake on a bike at one point) and no injuries as far as I heard.

Great group of guys to ride with... after the baby is born, i'll be back out there. Put the new Dunlop 952's on last night. should hook up great!

  9. the unabiker guards are well thought of... I can't remember which brand I got. They were very easy to install... about a half an hour. The horn install was the only thing that slowed me down; in fact, I still can't get it to sound out consistently...and I had to turn it around so it wasn't right against the radiator. If you want to work on your bike, you're welcome to bring the stuff to my house, or, if you have the tools, I can run over and help at your place. I don't get inside the engine, but take care of everything else. I think I'll tackle my first valve adjustment (in about 20 years) this winter.

Don't let those things stop you from riding this weekend; I promised my wife no helicopters or sirens, so I'll be going pretty mellow. as far as the wings; do you mean the "cowel" type thing that attaches to the tank? I haven't seen a DRZ without them, but I wouldn't worry about the cooling. That's what the fan and idiot light are for... you're bike will tell you.

regarding case guards... They install with silicone; no real attachment to speak of. went on in 5 minutes, ready to ride the next day
