    Honda XR650L

Welcome Cheff, I know you chose the right bike. About the oil cooler, the XR400 oil cooler works great with limited setup. The cost however is high, almost 200 clams if you go new. I have all the parts for a aftermarket(car style) cooler that I am going to install when I can afford the 6gal tank. I want to wait so I don't have to relocate the cooler when done. I will take pics and post when done. Mike, to unleash the pig; a couple of free mods &, smog block kit $21 K&N air filter $50 Dynojet carb kit $58 The power you unleash with only these mods, Priceless!!! New pipe $350, 250 more for header. I like stealth mode sometimes. Do the first mods and see how you like it before spending the farm on the bike. There's my 2 cents worth.
  3. Well it looks like Kaw'ee is off to the zoo. I will be on the Honda 8am for food then a ride.
  4. Ok it looks like Sunday 0800 for breakfast at the Casino then ride dirt to the ATA event at Mc Cain. I may end up 4 wheeling to the event, I am trying to drag a wounded rider out with us.
  5. I know some trails. This is my back yard, Wow ee's too. Maybe a visit is in order! Besides Phantom 1, There are some great loops from my place, lot's of dirt some flat track. Lots of meeting places with fuel and parking. We could meet at the Golden Acorn Casino and ride in from there at 0800?????

Purchased First DS - reccomended gear?

Welcome Levvy. The best thing to do is wear what you think you might need and ride with us. Checkout what some of us use. Be comfortable and be prepaired. I change gear for changing weather, dress in layers and such. You can buy all the latest hi-tech gear if you can afford it. Just protect yourself! See ya on the trail Oh yeh, I am on my second set of D-606's and really like them.

    XR650L Dave's Mods

You know the Dynojet kit cost more, I don't have to change anything else the bike runs perfect. Yes the milage is down, but the power is way up and I seem to pin the throttle more for fun. The dynojet kit comes with two main jets, one for air box mods and aftermarket filter and one for exhuast and air mods, a new spring and a adjustable needle. It was really easy and I don't have to mess with anything else. De-smogged, K&N, snorkel removed and slide drilled Dynojet kit #75-1148. It is like a new bike. If we do have to check the smog I can return everything except the drilled slide to factory specs. BTW 160 main for carb stuff & 165 for all. Third groove for c-clip. (153 main stock) 2 1/4-1/2 turns out. Since I ride 6000' to -50' at Octillo the carb is great. no more pinging on the grade. A different approach.
  13. It is finally cooling off in the desert. Time to explore new routes for the Desert Dash. Anyone want to explore this Saturday(10-14)?? Start at the 76 at Octillo exit I-8 at 8am. Lots of sand and the unknown. Pure fun!! We can make a day of it, with bail outs along the way for those who need to attend to other things. You can truck your rigs down if needed, I will ride. It is only 45 minutes from home. Or truck to my place (PM me if that is the case) I know some good stuff, but would like to find more. Any takers????????
  14. I tried to set a ride in the desert. 8am lets ride. Wait for 30 minutes and it looks like stevensyanora and I. Looking for something different we went towards Painted gorge. There are some great maintained roads back in there. You need to stay on established trails or you could find your self down here. There are some awesome sights and perfect weather. The mountains behind my tail light is where we came in. cool places to stop and break. Then we headed out for Octillo Wells. Went to the Blu inn and looked for rideorange group and must have missed them. Then went to the desert rose for food. We explored the desert some more and made our way back towards Octillo. With my new power and a pinned throttle I had to switch to reserve. We headed back to the 76 for fuel and I decieded to head home up the hill. I had a blast and found some areas I haven't been to for a long time. Great riding, wish you were there! Steve & I had a blast!
  15. The last pic was heading to Octillo Wells on Split Mountain Rd.
  16. Hey Rick, it looks like you may have found the bag, although it was found in a different area than you thought you had lost it. You can hook up with Steve for retrieval. My saddle bags as stated cooked on the exhuast and burned through. They were cheap and I should be able to fix them. They did have alot of storage. You can see from the pic Steve took they slid down to the heavy side. No bottom straps. I had spent too much time in the air to keep them stationary, but with some mods they could work. This is before they burned through on the right.

Buying a GPS, any opinions out there?

Martin, I have a Garmin etrex vista with a LCD display and It too is hard to see in sun light. Larger screen would be better. color might be better, I have never seen a color one in the sun light. BTW, my garmin was about $250+ with software a while back.
  18. Front bag worked great, I will safety wire it. ( do you know the guy who lost his fender bag reciently? It was found.) Back bag slid back and cooked on the exhaust. Too much air time. I think I can fix it. It did lighten up my pack load.
  19. Wow! you guys missed an awsome ride in the desert! No rain about 78 degrees light breeze. Perfect riding weather.

    Phantom Trail II

Some political issues have come up. Still investigating ownership. Waiting for my new computer.5-10 days.
  23. I am not sure of the exit number TB 430 H7, or the second exit at the desert floor turn right to the 76 station. We can gas up there. It is the exit to take for plaster city and we will ride a loop and come back where we started at Octillo. You guys can probably park near the gas station. Looks like another adventure developing. Hopefully we can hookup with the ride-orange group for refreshments.
