GPS-Anything under $350 that you recommend

I use an etrex legend h series. That's the blue one. They're under $150 and they work just as well as the more expensive ones. When you take a piece of equipment places where it might get destroyed, it's better if it didn't cost much in the first place.

    SDAR Registration / Approval Process

I didn’t vote because I don’t think it makes much difference either way. Here’s my reasoning. What are the requirements to sign up for SDAR? Isn’t it just that you have an interest in dual-sport motorcycles? I think that’s fine. Anyone who’s interested in dual-sport motorcycles should be able to ask and answer questions and post here. Probably should live around San Diego or visit frequently. There’s not much here that would interest non-locals anyway although I’ve seen people from other parts of the country get usernames to ask questions about Baja. Spammers probably wouldn’t bother trying to sign up with a manual approval process and spies are mostly going to be smart enough not to tell you they’re a spy. Why would someone not get approved?  You’re only interested in posting links to advertisements. (spammer)  You’re an environmentalist looking for ammunition to keep motorcycles out of “your” areas. (spy)  You piss off the guy approving membership by telling him you’re willing to be here even though you’re really too cool to be here. (jerk) Spammers are easy to spot and ban. The guy who’s too cool? I guess a lot of ignore lists get longer. Okay, maybe we are better off with the manual process.

Think We Should Approve This New Member ?

Not the most tactful way to put it, but I can understand his frustration. He wants to get in on a ride that I guess is happening in a few days and he isn't getting approved for membership here. Whether you approve him or not. I really don't care either way.

Think We Should Approve This New Member ?

The forums where approval is done automatically by computer aren't bombarded with advertising and spam posts. The reason is simple. Genuine users report spam posts, the posts get deleted, and the offender gets banned immediately. So if it takes a long time for someone to be approved, it has nothing to do with avoiding spam.

    Baja Mountain Bike Ride

I'm thinking about going on the "Paseo Rural" mountain bike ride in May. It starts in the Guadalupe Valley in the Baja wine country just north of Ensenada and goes about 30 miles to the coast. The entry fee is $25 to $30 U.S. depending on whether you pre-register or not. Here's a link to the "Paseo Rural" official website. The website lists estimated completion times based on your physical condition. I'd probably do it in the "not so great" physical condition time of 4 hours or so. Even if I could go faster, I'd take it easy, take breaks, and enjoy the scenery. Here's a link to a ride report on a local mountain biking forum.

    susuki DR200SE?

I bought a DRZ400 at OTD and a friend of mine bought one of the Yamaha 250's with fuel injection there (I can't think of the model number right now). I'm pretty sure they sell every Japanese model bike. The price they quote you is the out-the-door price. No surprises when you walk in the door. They do what they say they're going to do.

    susuki DR200SE?

I've got a DR200 and I still ride it. I'm only 5'6" and I think it's a little too small for me. At 5'10", it'd definitely be too small for you.

    susuki DR200SE?

Even if you're buying your bike used, check out the prices for new bikes at OTD Cycle Sports. A lot of people are asking more for a used bike on craigslist than a new bike from OTD. If you do buy a bike new locally, print out a quote from OTD to take it to the dealer and beat them over the head with it. I've had dealers match the OTD price. If they don't match it, drive up to L.A. and buy the bike from OTD.

    drz tail light

I put the Edge Tail Light from Wheeling Cycle Supply on my DRZ. I didn't have any issues putting it on.
  11. Your ATM card works in Mexico. The latest spot I see as of right now is San Ignacio. There's a bank right up the road in Guerrero Negro.
  12. I second what Koog says. Really not that big of a deal going it alone. Lots of people do it. Just ride a little more carefully.
  13. His spot is moving again so he must be OK.
  14. For $20, I'll have to give one of those a try. For saws, I like the ones that cut with the pull stroke. The best ones I've tried are the Silky saws. It's amazing how fast they cut. If you were in your back yard and had to cut through a 6 inch log, you could probably have the job finished with a Silky sooner than you could grab an extension cord and a power tool. If anyone's interested, a search for Silky Saw on Amazon.com will turn them up. A cheaper pull-to-cut alternative to the Silkies are the Coleman camp saws available at Wal Mart. They don't cut as well as the Silkies, but for $10, not a bad value.
  15. I was looking at that too. The last spot ping was at 8 PM north of LA Bay. I didn't think there was even a trail out there. It looks like a long cold night in the desert. I hope he took a sleeping bag with him! Actually, I just hope he's OK even if he is freezing.
  16. Looks like you're on a nice trip. Enjoy yourself and be safe.
  17. Mexico's a free country. Isn't it? I think that means rules don't apply and you can do whatever you please. It was funny when he flipped off the 2nd vehicle to go by.
  18. Left-handed drill bit (check Harbor Freight for cheap ones), reversible drill. When you drill it out with the left-handed bit, it may come out as you're drilling. If it isn't out after you've drilled the hole, you could use a screw extractor. They're available at auto parts stores. Every time I've gone this route with a stuck screw, (only 2 or 3 times) it's come right out as I drilled the hole with the left-handed bit. I think all the vibration plus the torque from the drilling works it loose.
  19. Thanks guys for answering. "Seems lame but for me thats enough." No. Doesn't seem lame to me. Fourteen miles on a mountain bike is kind of a long way to me too.
  20. How many miles and how much climbing did you do? Go ahead and guess if you didn't have a bicycle odometer or GPS.
  21. As long as you stay at a campground, you're probably OK. The only place I can think of within 3 hours is Coyote Cal's at Eréndira. It's a hostel on the beach and they allow camping right outside the building.

    Hey!

Any mountain bikers around the South Bay?
  24. Hey small tank, I make it down there from time to time. Today won't work for me though.
  25. Usually I'm available for local South Bay rides and sometimes I have days off in the middle of the week, but today won't work out for me. Have a good ride.
