Paul (619) 756-5002 Navy to celebrate 100 years of flight with huge air show By Jeanette Steele Originally published February 8, 2011 at 11:56 a.m., updated February 8, 2011 at 7:29 p.m. 100 Years of Naval Aviation About 200 aircraft will fly over San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 12 as part of the Centennial of Naval Aviation. The "Parade of Planes" begins at 1 p.m. when vintage planes fly over San Diego Bay. The aircraft will arrive from the south, passing over the Coronado Bridge. Coming Feb. 11: A special section on theNaval centennial evokes memories of airplane factory Details For more information about Navy Centennial of Aviation events, go to mwrtoday.com/cona or call Coronado Naval Base at (619) 545-8167. In a majestic choreography of planes, boats and automobiles, more than 120,000 people are likely to gather around San Diego Bay on Saturday for an historic parade of Navy air power. Nearly 200 current and vintage military aircraft will fly over the Coronado Bridge and up the belly of the bay to celebrate 100 years of naval aviation. The Navy is bringing the party here because North Island was the birthplace of naval aviation in 1911. The first Navy officer to earn wings traveled here for his flight training, and the first makeshift aircraft carriers came to San Diego Bay to work out aerial fighting tactics. The parade of flight begins at 1 p.m. with a flyover by the Blue Angels, followed by examples of the Navy's earliest airplanes. Barring complications from weather or mechanical glitches, the show will continue for 2½ hours. The National Weather Service forecast calls for sunny skies on Saturday with a high near 73. The finale will be a formation flyover of about 35 planes that make up the air wing of the aircraft carrier John C. Stennis, in town from its home port of Bremerton, Wash. The all-day celebration includes a free open house at North Island Naval Air Station, with 75 aircraft parked on display. In a rare treat, the Navy will offer public tours of the Stennis, plus the San Diego-based amphibious assault ship Peleliu and the destroyer Pinckney. While the air will be crowded Saturday afternoon, the situation on the ground may be equally busy. From 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Coast Guard is restricting access to the middle of San Diego Bay, from Harbor Island to the G Street Pier. The Coronado ferry will run its standard schedule, but spectator boaters will be limited to watching from a section of water just off Harbor Island. Entrance to the North Island event is free, as is parking on base. Bleacher seats for the parade of flight are $5. For ship tours, proof of citizenship is required, such as a drivers license or passport. Tours are open to people 8 years and older who are physically capable of climbing up and down narrow ship ladders. Wear closed-toe, low-heeled shoes, though the Navy will shuttle visitors from the flight line to the ship piers. Coronado police are asking people to carpool and take public transportation to less congestion on the island. The Coronado Bridge will remain open during the air parade, though it is likely to become gridlocked as drivers take in the unusual spectacle. The aerial show can be witnessed from many points in the bay, though the best seats in San Diego will be along the downtown waterfront and on Harbor Island. "Center stage" will be in the water just off North Island's east-facing side, Some aircraft will pause there to perform demonstrations. San Diego radio station KOGO 600 AM will broadcast a "fly-by-fly" description of the aircraft as they pass center stage. The broadcast begins at noon. The Port of San Diego will offer free bleacher seating at the tip of Broadway Pier for the parade. Seats are first-come, first-served and are up for grabs starting at sunrise, a port official said. Attendance projections are basically guesswork, as nothing like this has occurred in modern memory. A somewhat similar event, the Red Bull Air Races in 2009, reportedly attracted about 70,000 spectators a day. At least 50,000 people are anticipated at North Island. A base official said they do expect to turn visitors away because of space.

  4. Superman Producer Missing in Mexico By Jack Noyes NBCLosAngeles.com NBCLosAngeles.com updated 1 hour 42 minutes ago 2011-02-03T15:16:19 Big screen Superman movie producer Ilya Salkind has been reported missing in Mexico. Friends and family reported Salkind, 63, missing to Mexican authorities Sunday night, telling police he was last seen in Mexico City. Information posted on a website by friends and family noted Salkind went "missing from his family home in Tepozlan Mexico about one hour south of Mexico City in Morales County, and the next largest city is Cuernavaca which is further south from Tepozlan. Salkind was last heard from on Sunday at about 8:00 p.m after speaking with friends and business partners in Los Angeles, although it is believed that he left his house on Monday to do some errands and for a dental appointment." He was reported missing after he did not return for a followup appointment. Friend James Buccelli said that when he last spoke with Salkind on the phone, the call was cut off. "Never in a million years do you think that's going to happen to someone you know or someone close to you," said Buccelli. Buccelli said Salkind often returns to the home to write. According to the website "Ilya is credited with producing and supervising (with his deceased father) the filming on "Superman" and "Superman II," simultaneously, as the father and son team had done with "The Three Musketeers" and "The Four Musketeers." Later, Ilya also acted as Executive Producer on "Superman III" and was involved in the production of numerous other films including most recently "Young Alexander the Great."

    Carrizo Peak

Yes, sometimes the best things in life are free. Public access tv can't be commercial by design. It's volunteer unless a cable show wants to show people overcoming natural and mechanical obstacles on offroad vehicles in SoCal's forests and deserts. But if it goes down that road, the political element would be eliminated and Col. Douglas Macgregor's comments on the nation's defense strategy/spending would be missing. HAPPY NEW YEAR

  19. More federal workers' pay tops $150,000 By Alex Brandon, AP The fast-growing pay of federal employees has captured the attention of fiscally conservative Republicans who won control of the U.S. House of Representatives in last week's elections. TOP PAY The number of federal workers earning more than $150,000 has soared in the last five years. Sources: USA TODAY analysis, Office of Personnel Management By Dennis Cauchon, USA TODAY The number of federal workers earning $150,000 or more a year has soared tenfold in the past five years and doubled since President Obama took office, a USA TODAY analysis finds. The fast-growing pay of federal employees has captured the attention of fiscally conservative Republicans who won control of the U.S. House of Representatives in last week's elections. Already, some lawmakers are planning to use the lame-duck session that starts Monday to challenge the president's plan to give a 1.4% across-the-board pay raise to 2.1 million federal workers. FEDERAL WORKERS: Earning double their private counterparts Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who will head the panel overseeing federal pay, says he wants a pay freeze and prefers a 10% pay cut. "It's stunning when you see what's happened to federal compensation," he says. "Every metric shows we're heading in the wrong direction." National Treasury Employees Union President Colleen Kelley counters that the proposed raise "is a modest amount and should be implemented" to help make salaries more comparable with those in the private sector. Federal salaries have grown robustly in recent years, according to a USA TODAY analysis of Office of Personnel Management data. Key findings: oGovernment-wide raises. Top-paid staff have increased in every department and agency. The Defense Department had nine civilians earning $170,000 or more in 2005, 214 when Obama took office and 994 in June. oLong-time workers thrive. The biggest pay hikes have gone to employees who have been with the government for 15 to 24 years. Since 2005, average salaries for this group climbed 25% compared with a 9% inflation rate. oPhysicians rewarded. Medical doctors at veterans hospitals, prisons and elsewhere earn an average of $179,500, up from $111,000 in 2005. Federal workers earning $150,000 or more make up 3.9% of the workforce, up from 0.4% in 2005. Since 2000, federal pay and benefits have increased 3% annually above inflation compared with 0.8% for private workers, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Members of Congress earn $174,000, up from $141,300 in 2000, an increase below the rate of inflation. Jessica Klement, government affairs director at the Federal Managers Association, says the government's official pay analysis shows that federal workers earn less than private workers for comparable jobs. Still, she says, managers are willing to give up next year's raise: "If it will help the country bounce back, they're willing to make the sacrifice." Article: http://www.usatoday....dpay10_ST_N.htm
