What You Do When You Have Broken Ribs

Six broken ribs, punctured lung, fractured knee, biffed shoulder, and a few minor things. On crutches for three months and no flying for six months. Nothing to do about the ribs but take good deep breaths regularly. Took a while before I could sit back into a chair, then would knife you when you'd lean forward again. That went away in about a year. I was riding sport bikes back then, so not a challenging on the knee and ribs as a dirt bike would be, but was back on the bike in six months when the Dr. gave me the all clear. First thing I did was ride out to the scene of the crash and reconstruct and tried to learn from it - target fixation in my case. Get well soon, ride when you're ready.

    Big Bike @ McCain 5/3

I might be able to make it. Boss has gone off to a horse show with one of my daughters so I will have to wait till later tonight to confirm. Will be coming from San Marcos so 8:30ish works for me.

Reasons Why You Dirt Bike/Dual Sport?

Grew up riding dirt before switching to the street. Did my share of tearing up the road, then switched to road racing and had fun with that. Had kids and finally decided to hang up the spurs on the street so other natural outlet is riding dirt. Dual sport opens up so many additional trails and riding area over dirt only bikes that I decided to go that way. Love the outdoors so it's a win win . . .

    First time to Borrego

Thanks. Bike has 14/49 gearing right now and I just picked it up from the KTM shop after having the FMF slip-on added and the emission system verified - Looking forward to trying it out. Will be doing first oil change today and maybe getting in a short ride. Bike still has stock tank and well short of the first tank of fuel being run through it, so no idea what I'm going to see, but was thinking 40 something mpg would be about right. I have a couple of fuel bottles I carried when exploring on the trials bike and for when I did 5MoH, so maybe first time through I'll carry one or both of them. They're pretty light when empty. Again, thanks for the ride report. Pinyon Mtn Trail is one of my favorites in the BS area. Here's a clip of Heart Attack Hill in the jeep. Nothing special jeep wise, more fun because of my two daughters who were filming and narrating.

    First time to Borrego

Nice I'm looking forward to taking the new bike down Pinyon Mtn trail. It's been a while since I've done it on a bike. Last time was in a Jeep. What's the range roughly on a stock 500 EXC tank for this kind of riding? If I remember right, my TE-510 was getting a bit low by the time I completed the loop back around Fish Creek Wash to the camp site, and it has an oversize tank.
  8. Don't think I'll be putting my bike through this kind of use but nice to know it held up well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGL_I5KhjJY

haha SOMEONE got a new Austrian.........

Also new to KTM. Picked up a new 500 EXC a couple days ago, so will be looking for pointers. Waiting for the bar guards and gearing to arrive. Hope they arrive soon as I plan to take it out Saturday for a break in run. Will be an 06 TE-510 on the market pretty soon. Need to do a bit of work on it before I offer it up to the masses.

RIP.. John Deavers....Memorial ride 1-8-12 Sunday

Wow, sorry to hear that. RIP
  12. Glad you like it. Maybe if I ever get my fat ass back on a bike again (meaning a bike with a seat ) I'll upgrade the TE 510 to the 300. The thought of a nice light trail bike is really appealing as most of the time the power of the 510 is untapped.

    Token Post

No, street bikes are gone, but not forgotten. Gave them up a while after I had kids. Still ride the Husky here and there on the street, but mostly to get from one trail to another. Say hi to Tom for me. Hope he's doing well.

    Token Post

I've been so busy with other things that I haven't ridden in way too long. Haven't been to many of my favorite forums either, one for so long that they retired my user id. So figured I'd make the rounds and at least make a token post here or there to show that I'm not dead Best to everyone, Daryl
  15. That was easy, fouled plug. First time the bike has ever done that.
  16. It's a poorly kept secret - closer to the 76 than the 74 Good thing I didn't go to McCain valley. Rode around for about an hour and then the bike started acting up. Not sure if I fouled a plug or got something in the carb or what but the bke started cutting out under load quite badly. Thankfully I was on the way back to my truck and only about 1/4 mile away. Will be tearing into it later today to see if I can figure out what's going on with it.

    Accident near Ocotillo

Dang, that's sad. Just goes to show that you need to ride faster. If they'd been moving along the Honda wouldn't have tried to pass. Do think the driver of the Dodge should be charged with manslaughter even if he didn't initiate the circumstances that caused the accident. If he'd have been sober, and not a spaz, he probably wouldn't have lost control and veered into the path of the riders. IMHO, you should be charged with attempted manslaughter anytime you're caught behind the wheel with a BAC above the legal limit.
  18. I'm coming from North County so 7 - 8 AM is a to early for me. Corral Canyon is OK, but the Rocks out at McCain are more fun to me. Maybe I'll just play around at the NC ORV area this weekend. Am probably way out of shape anyway from not riding all summer, even though I have been getting some gym time in.
  19. Looking promising for a hall pass Saturday. Not going to make the drive though if I'm the only one showing up - otherwise I'll ride the North County ORV area. If you're thinking of heading to McCain valley Saturday, make sure to repy to this thread . . . Hope to see some of you Saturday
  20. I don't know who else might be out there, but Colby and Al are there like clockwork every single Saturday. Colby shows up around 10 with his "trials" KTM 450 and Al shows up around noon with his fuel injected Montesa. Haven't decided what I'm going to do on Saturday just yet. I haven't been out all summer and really need to get back on the bike. I'll keep an eye on the thread and maybe I can talk my way into a hall pass this weekend if I'm lucky
  21. Hope to make it out there. This whole summer and fall has been filled with house and other family business, with not a single ride it's about time to get out and have some fun !!
