    MOTORHOME

That boat must have been going at a pretty good clip to get that much clear of the bridge. I give it a 7.5.
  4. I thought we had to be personally vetted by another member before getting access to the members forum?

    Mickey's Search and facebook thread

Interesting, one of these days when I make a meeting I'd like to talk to you, Crawdaddy, if possible, about this. I have a bit of experience with searches locally. I'm expecting that the sheriff's sar didn't release any info to you on searched grids or areas? Actually, better to do this FTF.

    Jacumba Sunday

Damn, I'd love too head out there....probably a no go though, both from a time available standpoint and a skills standpoint LOL
  10. Hehe, just spotted that too. One of his backup/practice bikes. Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.....
  11. If the money was there I'd be all over that. Not a doubt. Then again, I'm a Dakar nerd, so go figure.

SDAR in This Saturday's Union Tribune

All in all, not too shabby an article. Came out pretty well, lots better than my media exposures. good deal!

SDAR in This Saturday's Union Tribune

I'll look for it. It'll be interesting to see how accurate and edited it is, I haven't had good luck with the press in the past...hope this one is different.
  14. Excellent weather out there, about 70 and light wind. Only saw a few other riders, couple of quads, some trucks. Still seems to be very lightly populated, compared to several years back. Took the new(old) xr4 out for the first real dirt day, boy do I have lots of work to do. Mostly on myself, hehe. Rode from the cabin we were using out by Landers, out to Means and Soggy, then out west, then to the Rock Corral and some single track, back to the cabin. 134 miles, then took a short loop out to Giant Rock, another 39 miles. Fun day, only dropped it once at slow speed in sand, doing an off camber turn on a hill.
  15. Yep, BF, good point. Like many of the areas I rode years back, that are now gone. Better ride while we can...then again, Irwin has been making noises about this for many years. Hell, I worked on an expansion project back in '96, for the Silurian Valley area North of Baker....and they still haven't expanded there. Now watch, there'll be an announcement tomorrow about the expansion. Had to laugh though, right after I took that shot, a couple of quad riders came past and started to do donuts and dust everyone out. Kept going and going, still going when I left. I think they were dusting out the folks on the other side of the rock on purpose. Good PR for off roaders, sigh.

More federal workers' pay tops $150,000

I'm waiting for that assembly bill to pass, that should ensure all sorts of hilarity. I'd like to find out how much some of the folks in Vista are making, might be interesting. In a bad way.

    teaching a NEWB

Hmmm....about the only thing I can think of, other than figuring controls out, is start slowly, and really work on slow speed skills first. Lock to lock figure eights, and such. Get used to which way the bike is leaned, especially when stopping, get used to dabs, play with clutch control. I'm just getting back into it after years of not really riding, but it seems to be coming back pretty quickly for me. I think her MTB experience is going to help quite a bit. The other thing I'd do is let her get used to dropping the bike, in a safe area. Get her used to getting off the bike safely if it's going down. Again, all slow speed stuff.

    Radio Antenna - FT270R

I've been using a very similiar Diamond on a VX7r for a while now, works pretty well. Lightweight, and is really flexy. I've also got a couple of stubby antennas that don't amount to much more than dummy loads, but for short range they're fine.

    lost my wallet

That sucks. Up your security at your place. They now have your home address....and a good feel for what you're into that might make them some money. Yep, paranoid. Then again, I've been hit a few times in my life. Now, if I lose my stuff, everything gets changed - cards, accounts, locks, numbers.

    VX 170 Radio Geeks

The nifty cards are a really nice thing to have - only thing is you have to waterseal the edges. I've got them for almost all of my radios - yeah, I'm a ham too.

    Bill passes to 'quiet' motorcycles...

California .gov at work again, as far as I'm concerned.
  25. Yeah, I kinda go between the two areas, San Diego (actually UC area), and Vista. Anyways, after a few years hiatus from bikes (ok, more like fifteen or so years away), I grabbed one of the XR400's that was on CL. It was the '98 for $1900, got it for $1750. Plated bike, with some goodies on it - FMF pipe, skid plate, top triple is set for a dampener, lowering link (removing that one...) and I'll add a few other things as time goes on (dampener, desert tank, might fair it Rally/Raid style). It's at Clairemont Cycle Supply now, getting new tires on it, and new fork springs for my weight. Jamie at CCS said it looked pretty clean, not abused, so that's a good thing. The last time I had a bike it was a custom desert bike - bored XR350 motor, CR500 front end, RM250 rear, etc etc. Nice bike, had a Wiseco kit in it that I leaned out a bit, and that was the end of that kit. Sold it years back to some local guys, hope they restored it...who knows, maybe they're on this forum? A few friends of mine that the wife and I head out to the desert with have a cabin up in Landers, and they're all SCORE racers - from Class 50, to bugs, and whatever else. They've had some success before class 50 too, in the years past. Third place at the 1000. So I've played around on their 650's, and finally decided to get my own bike, but I figured a 400 was plenty of bike for me, and I like the XR's. Not going to race, just like to trail ride and explore. XR should be perfect for that. Also into 4x4's (have a '86 Suburban with a Cummins and one or two other bits in it, F350 daily driver), Ham radio (general class), and shooting. Plus all sorts of other stuff. Like a Rokon Trailbreaker. Used to import Unimogs too, still deal a bit in military surplus. I'm really enjoying reading the ride reports and seeing the different areas that are still available. Big difference from thirty years ago though. I rode from age 12 or so, up to my mid thirties. I'm old and decrepit now though. So howdy, and I'm looking forward to learning some new things here.
