Use these with dirt oriented gloves. They work well. Farkle Fingers.

    Using Garmin w/Mac....

To add to this... In order to Limit Track to 500 points you must click "Basecamp" at the top of the window, select Preferences, click Transfer, check Simplify Tracks by Removing Intermediate Points and then type 500 into Maximum Number of Points per Track to Send to Your GPS Device. (I actually forgot the steps but I have this thread marked so I am updating it so I can always go back to it) The 76cx can only handle 500 points per track. Longer tracks which have over 500 points will be cut short. By limiting a track to 500 points you possibly lose some intermediate points. The 76cx can only handle so much specificity being at $180 GPS device. If you were doing something like the TransAmerica Trail, you would have many different tracks and possibly different memory cards etc. Another reason I'm moving to the Garmin Montana. It can hold 200 tracks and 10,000 points. You are not limited to the 500 points/track, which is very nice. Especially if you've downloaded tracks that someone else created via track log.

    where to retire?

(Not directed to Slut specifically) I love to hear people say SD has bad traffic. When I moved from DC to SD, it felt the eqivilant to losing 50 lbs. SD has almost no traffic. Just look at Google maps in the morning, and you will see almost no red. For a city its size, I think the traffic in SD moves exceptionally well. Don't discount that when considering where to move Look at the amount of public land we have here in CA! I consider that one of the greatest assets this and the other western states have. Thirteens times the amount of land TX (as an example) has and they are over 50% larger in land mass, so that is almost like we have 18 times the amount of public land that they do. And half their public land is military. Try riding dirt bikes in TX. I've tried. Not too many places, and not a lot of mountains to do it in either. Usually have to ride on private land. And with all that land go the greenies, so it is a love/hate relationship. If you don't want a bunch of greenies, move to a state that doesn't have much area to ride. That's the trade off.

    where to retire?

What many people don't realize about TX is that while there is no state income taxes, much of the burden of government provided services are pushed to the counties and cities. Real estate taxes are terribly high. My in-laws pay over $5K/year on a $189K house. Additionally, there are many other districts/schools/utilities that have taxing authority. My in-laws also pay taxes to a utilities district and the school district separately. Not only that, but home insurance in TX is also very high. It costs about the same amount/person to run a state, unless you have some anomaly, like FL has tourism and AK has oil. That being said, I think the average tax burden, if you combine everything you pay in taxes and fees, is not that far off from state to state, the anomalies exempted. Of course some will be higher than others, but as I've always said, there is a reason it is cheap to live in Alabama. Not trying to start a "but CA has high taxes everywhere" discussion, as I'm sure somebody can find high taxes to try and refute my arguments one way or another. Rather, I'm just saying that it seems every place gets you one way or another, as Slut saw in TX.

    where to retire?

.....Unless you're on the other side of the mountains, then it is dry desert. While stationed in Whidbey Island, it would be wet and dreary most of the winter, and we needed to get up towards the teens in altitude. Pop across the mountains and it was sunny and clear almost all the time. Especially hot in the summer. But the winters were dry and sunny 100 miles east of Seattle.

    where to retire?

LIved in Norfolk, VA for a while. If you compare the weather there to Charlotte, it is almost exactly the same. That being said, muggy hot summers and colder than you would think winters. We own a house in Yorktown, by Norfolk, that is paid off, but there is no way you could convince my wife to live back on the east coast. We thought about NC also, as it is very beautiful, but the summers just kill you. When I lived in El Centro, we thought the summers there were better than when we lived in DC!!!

    where to retire?

Well...I already live in Alpine; what does Jamul offer that is "better" than Alpine? Is housing pricing THAT different? It wasn't when I was looking. Weather seems about the same; Alpine has a big freeway going through it and is a little more "mountain"-like. I'm more curious about places that will stretch a dollar...also curious about where the "get out of kali" folks think is a good destination I actually LIKE weather...a little rain helps make everything nice; but hurricanes and tornandoes kind of suck (I did live in Tejas for 2 years) Lived near Seattle for two tours. Nothing is better than Seattle on a clear sunny day. Problem is you don't get many. For as far north as it is, SEA is very mild. Even in the winter. But damp cold is worse than dry cold. Living in Monterey now, and going through the same thought processes with the wife now, I just don't see how anyone could want to move away from San Diego. Is there a better place in the US? I think you would be hard pressed to find it, unless you were talking about Malibu or Santa Barbra. We've thought about Boulder, but the winters..... We've thought about Big Bear, but the winters.... We've thought about the Sierras, but the winters.... Can you tell I'm starting to get old. Alpine sounds very nice. As I've always said, you get what you pay for when it comes to a place to live. There is a reason it is cheap to live in AL, MS, LA and TX.
  10. If you look on ADV, there is a tread that has a discount for ADV members. Don't have it with me, but I think it is pretty easy to find. I used it to buy my second top clamp. If you are interested, I have a spare, never used top clamp I'd sell. Only thing is that it is machined for a heated grip switch. Post a pic when I get home if you are interested.

Great article on the Montana, but from a BMW/GS approach. I think it will work just as well with the dual sport crowd.

How about price? The Montana looks to be almost 3x as expensive. Yes it is! About $450 at Amazon, but you can find it for about $400 at other places. And it costs about three times as much to live in San Diego vice Alabama/Mississippi. There is a reason why things are expensive. I usually find it to be worth it and that you get what you pay for.

Yeah, but it is still in the box. Haven't been riding much over the last few months due to some outside issues. Even though I haven't used it, I played with one at REI before I bought, and as a 60CSX owner, there is no way I can recommend anything but the Montana going forward. It beats the 60 in almost every area, and has a ton more real estate, better in the sun, etc. It is the only GPS I can recommend at this time. I bought it for the GSA, but already have the rugged mount for the WRR. I can't see a reason to stay with the Garmin 6X or 7X series after this one.
  14. Deb, I'll happily trade you the older, vinyl style holder for your bungee one, if you are interested. Jim

You could just say that the pilots are there to get him where he needs to be to do the job! There is a reason they call them bus drivers.

    Battery Tenders

Funny you bring this up today as I was just bitching about my GSA battery. Brand new batter in December, used a Battery Tender on it over the Spring and it worked great at keeping it topped off. Rode the GSA 13 days ago, didn't put it back on the tender, and it this afternoon it doesn't have enough juice to start the damn bike. On the other hand, the stock battery in my WR250R rocks, and is 2.5 years old. I rode the bike on the LA-B-V ride over Thanksgiving. Brought it home and parked it, without the benefit of a tender or anything else. Last time the engine was running was in the Orleans parking lot after LA-B-V. Literally didn't touch the bike until near Memorial Day. Went, turned the key on, FI pump did its thing, and I hit the starter. Within 1.5 seconds, the bike was running! I guess the damn GSA is always pulling something from the battery, but it seems it can't sit two weeks without being on a tender. Whatever battery is in the WRR...I'm buying again when it goes dead.

    In seek of asylum

Fudgy, I believe I met you at the LA-B-V ride this past year in Baker at the gas station. Didn't you guys ride those GSA's through all that sand and whoops? Needless to say, I was very impressed seeing how you guys rode with Jim Hyde and all those big bikes. Well done!!! No way in hell I would have ridden my GSA over all that! Jim
  20. The few races I did while I lived in El Centro (TRX-450 quad and, yes once on the mighty Girl Bike!) and the professional interactions I had with the Clubs/D38 as part of my job on the base IRT the bombing ranges, led me to feel similar, but different. I had the advantage of meeting Chip Corfman while he still had Threat Racing open, and that was a great intro, even if I was riding a quad. Great guys when you got to know them, but boy, to the outsider who's only introduction was the website and forum, you could really get the exact same idea that Goofy got. Seems like a very dysfunctional lot of people/clubs/district. They are, as one friend that also raced a little described it, a dumpster fire. Some clubs are great, but the general outward impression is not good.

Just bought the Montana. Awesome unit. Love the my 60 series, but the Montana is just leaps and bounds beyond the 60.
  24. I believe that there is no way King was responsible for the debacle, but rather that if four, dumb, out of control a**holes from LA hadn't decided to to be responsible for beating the crap out of some dude, nobody in this country would have any idea who Rodney King was or even if he died at the bottom of a pool. How he handled himself afterwards they had no responsibility for, but he wouldn't never have been given his 15 min if it weren't for them. If an idiot isn't given a tool, he can never use it.
