  1. From the video it looks like you can shift the weight of the bike back and forth with your body weight on technical stuff, with mine you can't...just too heavy, or you have to put a lot of effort in it, and be a large rider, and it will wear you out if you do it for very long. So you have to plan a rocky section farther ahead, and keep your momentum up.

Also looks like it will have more ground clearance, always worried about casing mine on big rocks. The KTM 950 is better offroad than my pig, primarily because it has worlds more suspension and good ground clearance, also the narrower motor. Mike Miani tried to rip a cylinder or 2 off his 1200GS once in a ride, and probably could've gotten a cheaper divorce than the bill from BMW :)

Anyone know what the weight on it will be? You would think losing the shaft would be about 25 pounds, though I don't think the Dakar with a chain weighed much less than the 1200GS, it's just more gutless :D

And wouldn't it be novel if they got rid of the exhaust system that can be measured in tons :D Quiet is good, but the pig has more metal in the muffler system than a couple trash cans, presumably that could be reduced.

  2. I usually pass Harley's at a brisk walk, they're normally parked :)

I saw a bike wreck up by Idylwild (sp) where a group of sportbikes came up behind some slow Harley's, and one of the guys on a GSXR ran right up the rearend of one of the full dress varieties on the exit of a corner, tore up the Harley quite a bit, but the Suzi went home in buckets. Gotta watch for slow moving vehicles...and they're so loud while being so slow...amazing. In the end it's the rider, my brother used to beat me no matter what I was riding :D

  3. Unless anyone has better information than I do, it looks like the fire now includes Amago track, which would preclude us from holding the event there, I think we'll have to wait until they re-open, and/or find another venue, which will take a little time. I also wonder (as I'm sure firefighters do) when the containment will happen. Also, people are/will be dealing with their own situations regarding the evacuations, which will take some more time, and people need to focus on their family situations right now.

We'll look at the options and let you all know...it really would've been fun  But we'll regroup and see what we can put together. For now we hope everyone will be able to save their buildings/property in that area, and around the county.

  4. I called the radio station and offered my home when the fire first started, they sent me to Red Cross, Red Cross told me they don't recommend private houses. I went down to Qualcomm stadium and tried to volunteer my house, and they didn't seem too thrilled either.

There seems to be an air of corporate butt-covering that's slowly invaded our culture over the last 20 years, even in emergencies. Many fire departments used to be volunteer, now they let the pro's go in, many of whom (but certainly not all, thanks to those who don't) seem to have the air of "Don't get sued, whatever you do" right beneath the surface. I think this has hurt us all a bit. "Your Safety" usually means "Our Deniability" et cetera. I secretly wonder if little organizations like ours can roll that trend back a bit, if people unite and help each other, and spread that out in a community, I think we'd all be better for it, but that's the Don Quixote in me

Anyway, I'm happy that people used this forum to help each other, really makes me happy on these occasions that we started this :)

  5. Well that was one of my motivations for building the site, to convince the public that we could create a group of people who had dual usage in mind, i.e. caring for the environment while we were out enjoying it. As a fortune would have it, the group has turned into just that, it seems we don't really attract the type who rides wheelies over rare cactus while flipping off cops wearing shorts and sandals. Most guys (and gals) are somewhat more mature than that, but we still want to make the point that the backcountry should be accessible to us as well. They normally shut down areas due to complaints about people riding offroad and destroying things, our argument has been that it's not our group doing it, and there needs to be a distinction.

We've been able to keep very good relations with BLM as a club, which can only help us change the public opinion of bikes with knobbie tires, and that means we'll have more people involved, and therefore more places to ride. I would hope we'll get more chances to represent the positive aspects of motorcycles, and gain more recognition as a responsible group, which represents most of us :friends: , even Kevin sometimes :drinks:

  6. Welcome! A lot of guys here came from riding strictly offroad and have found it really nice to be able to ride to where you're riding without worrying about trucking. There's a lot of friendly people here, just start checking out the rides and get involved, looking forward to seeing you on a ride someday :)

  7. 1. You'll be much happier if you pretty much leave your front brake alone, if you have to use it, make sure you're straight, or it'll get ugly.

    2. Don't fight the bike, let it move. It will wear you out in 10 minutes otherwise.

    3. Everyone hits a cactus once...no one has to tell them not to do it again :)

  8. I suspect if you waited for the cops, he would've turned into "Instant Boy Scout" and made something up about you with your specialized military training, alcohol and an bad attitude attacking him for no reason...which means you'd have to fill out paperwork and we all know paperwork sucks... :)

Until I can get a cop faster than a Domino's pizza delivery, I have resigned to keep some measure of self defense available for such occasions, I guarantee he wouldn't have stuck around until the cops showed up to deliver "justice", and neither would any prospective perpetrator, the fallacy in the whole setup which they're trying to get us to buy...yeah right :)

  9. mmm, been waitin' to see that CR500, it's plated, right?

We're mostly going to be on the somewhat easy track, but if guys want to go to the more advanced tracks there's about a 60 foot tabletop on the next track over that should nicely accomodate the frequent flyers.

Sounds like a good place for the CR, and we can talk about how much I'd have to bribe ya to ride it :) (I'm guessing a lot...worth a try). Anyway, love to drool over it :)

  10. I think what gets the police attention is behaving stupidly, basically potentially making more work for them by doing things that make it look like your going to hit parked cars any second. I rode an XR600 with no speedo, just an odometer for years, and basically I just kept pace with traffic and tried not to do wheelies, and I never had any trouble...or any idea how fast I was going, but visually if you fly past a car next to you, the cops automatically start watching you, that's how you spring to their attention usually, or I guess if you ride through iceplant on the on-ramp because you see a tasty dualsport route that looks cool :)

And hey, if you get pulled over and they ask if you know how fast you're going, you can (for once) say "I have absolutely no idea". Though if I get pulled over, I usually ask if it was for seatbelts :)
