March Rally Training

Gentlemen – Here’s an opportunity to get some good – quality navigation training if you’re interested in route book riding in the future. I know some of you are well versed in this technique – but most of the people on this email have never tried it. Navigation adds a whole new dimension to off road riding and gives some of us old farts a way to keep riding interesting when we’re not going as fast as we used to. If “the older I get the faster I was” applies to you ------ you may find this kind of riding very challenging and exciting as well as a little more cerebral twist to off roading. Not that it’s easy riding – because it’s not – but you can go your own pace with a group of guys and not worry about keeping up. I know for me ---- that’s important nowadays.

I was just out with this same group about 3 weeks ago and it was very cool to see 20 guys getting ready to go on a 200+ mile point to point ride and they casually left camp in groups of two or three and road off into the desert. At the end of the day – everybody showed up for dinner and told their stories and had a gas. Once you learn the program – there’s no baby sitting or holding hands. Each rider is responsible for himself – and once you’re experienced – that’s not an issue. And this class in March that’s mentioned below is the first step in learning these techniques.

The work that goes into these route books is incredible. The detail will blow your mind. The guy that puts them together has ridden Paris to Dakar on his Harley Sidehack and he definitely knows his stuff. The people doing the training have done multiple international rallies and they’re trying to spread the base for this type of riding so we can start seeing more rallies in this country. Relative to the Europeans and even Latin countries – America is way behind in the rally scene. This doesn’t mean this class is meant for people looking to ride rallies at a professional levels – but it is certainly meant to introduce people like us to the fun of route book riding.

There are a very limited number of spots available for this training. Charlie Rauseo (the organizer) likes to keep the group between 15 and 20. He has outlined his program below and shows the cost for the training – which includes your food. I will be going again in the Land Yacht and catering for the whole group – but I’m also going to take a few riders as part of my Evolution Adventures business. I have a maximum of 8 spots available and I will transport you and your bike to the bivouac and provide a warm bed in the Land Yacht for your comfort. Cost for going with me will be an additional $250 on top of the $750 to Charlie’s organization. Total of $1000 for all inclusive trip as outlined below.

You can go to my website and sign up ----- or call me direct and I’ll answer any questions. I’ve worked it out with Charlie so the guys (and/or gals) that go with me can pay the whole thing through me and I’ll pay Charlie his piece. If you’re not going with me you can work directly with Charlie.

Also – note that there are some basic requirements as far as navigation equipment for your bike. You can order everything directly from Charlie’s company – or at the very least – get advice from Charlie and his people as to the pro and cons on different kinds of odometers and gps units and route book holders. These guys are experienced and know their stuff.

Lastly – don’t leave this one until the last minute. The numbers are limited and we’re confident that we’ll be turning some people away at the end. Get in early and lock in your spot.

Feel free to call with any questions.

Make sure you read Charlies invitation below.

Thanks for your consideration

Hello All,

We’re planning a 3-day Rally School on March 6-8, 2009. This will focus on Navigation, Dunes and Sand Riding as applicable to international cross-country rallies such as the Dakar and FIM events. Location will be North of Baker, CA. We’ll run parts of the Death Valley Rally from the past few years.

For those who have come before, this one will have more “classroom” instruction and more “ride-along” navigation training.

Should be lots of fun!

Cost for the 3-day event is $750.

Included: Classroom-type instruction, guided navigation training, dunes and navigation drills, long rally routes, rally roadboks, 3-meals each day, Rally videos at night, water.

Not included: mechanical help. Bike recovery or sweep in case of breakdown or crash. Fuel and fuel cans. Accomodation (your tent will work), your bike.

Sat phones recommended.

Bikes must have 125 mile fuel range, wide-format roadbook reader, resettable odometer, GPS and license plate.

Available at extra cost:

RV-style sleeping place.

Transport from LA or SF area.

A limited number of rental rally bikes.

We have some MD Roadbook readers and other rally equipment for sale. You can find cheaper Acerbis roadbook readers at www.mx1west.com. Tell them we sent you! I’ve attached a photo of a simple navigation setup we use on an XR650R.

Space is limited, so please let me know if you’d like to come. We’ll ask for a deposit about a month before the event.

Fun fun
