Spring Break - Dirt Bike Style

Recommended Posts

The plan – Jarrett’s a senior in high school and his Spring break is the week of April 6th……..the original plan was to go to Moab, Utah to ride some AMAZING rock…….then I found out the Jeep Jamboree would also be going on that week so we altered the plan…….the revised plan - drive to Primm, NV. on Thursday night, ride a ~100 mile loop over to Red Rock Canyon and back on Friday, then drive up to Mesquite, NV. on Friday night........I set up the Bar 10 Ranch portion of the trip on Sat/Sun to accommodate other SDAR members who only had the weekend to spare and wanted to ride the Bar 10 loop (SnailDarter (Fred) and his son Karl, Slowdown (Ron) and his son Jon, SXP (Samir) and his wife Rekha)…..then, on Sunday, Roger, Jarrett, and I would head for Page, AZ. while the other 6 riders headed back to Mesquite. .........We’d spend a day in Page, AZ riding around Lake Powell with our very own SDAR/local tour guide – Zenosan (Don), and then head back to Mesquite on Tuesday….

This first segment of this trip report will deal with Days 1 and 2

We left Ramona around 6:30 pm on Thursday and headed for Primm (Note: - when leaving on a multiday trip it’s best to start packing more than an hour before departure time…..or you may forget critical items….more on that later)……we arrived in Primm around 11:30pm and checked into the not so swank but cheap “Buffalo Bills”……on Friday morning we headed down to the truck to unload and ride over to breakfast at Bonnie Springs on our way to Red Rock Canyon…….then we noticed the front tire on the 620 was flat (hmmmmm, Jarrett and I put new tires on both bikes :clapping: )…..I took the tube out, pumped it up, and it stayed inflated…….perhaps the valve stem wasn’t tightened properly? :good: ……Jarrett put a new tube in the front and off we went……but we didn’t get very far…….about a mile into the ride I went down HARD on the 620…….the front tire literally peeled off the rim and folded underneath :o …..and down I went….HARD :o

100_1371.jpg

When we took the tube out it had a pinch flat but I didn’t hit anything of significance in that first stretch of trail so I’m assuming I may have been riding on a REALLY LOW PSI tire due to a loose valve stem (again B) ) which caused me to pinch flat :o OR I’m just a really crappy rider (which is probably the real issue but I’d rather blame it on Jarrett’s tube change B) )…….but that’s not the bad part of the story…..after laying there for a moment and taking physical inventory to make sure nothing on ME was broken, I realized the bike was now gushing gas out of the left side of the tank……oh crap, the petcock snapped off!!!....So fliped the bike over on it's right side to slow the drainage of gas from the now wide open petcock.......

100_1373.jpg

Time to McGyver something together……Roger started whittling a stick to shove into what remained of the petcock while I got on the phone and started calling around for help/info/spare parts…….(a thankful shout out to Blind in One Ear for hooking me up with the KTM shop in Vegas)

100_1372.jpg

The stick//tape rig didn’t seal the leak but it worked good enough for me to be able to ride the bike back over to Primm……leaving a gas trail behind me…….don’t light a match!!!

100_1376.jpg

100_1377.jpg

The Vegas KTM shop didn’t have a KTM petcock but they had a Pingel Petcock that fit the bill so I bought that and a complete drive shaft seal/bushing/etc. for the 520 since it was spewing a bit of oil and it appeared to be coming from behind the counter sprocket (thought we had this issue resolved before we left but apparently we didn’t)…..once we were armed with the petcock/seal we drove around in Vegas for a bit in search of a brass T to run behind the new single sided petcock because I needed that to access both sides of the 620 gas tank…….after a few stops at local auto parts stores, Harbor Freight, and some 4 Wheel shop we discovered “Hardware Nirvana” in the form of McFadden-Dale Hardware …….what an awesome store!!!……they have all kinds of cool gadgets in there and had exactly what we needed to rig the 620………then we headed over to IN-N-OUT for lunch (I think Roger knows the location of every In-n-Out nationwide!) and after lunch we took Jarrett over to the Vegas Strip since he’d never seen it (no fashion points as we were still partially clad in our dirt riding gear......at least Jarrett and I took off our moto boots!)

IMG_4030.jpg

We arrived in Mesquite in the late afternoon and Samir and Rehka were already settled in…….we rigged up the new petcock on the 620 and changed out the drive shaft seal on the 520…….

IMG_4040.jpg

IMG_4041.jpg

IMG_4033.jpg

IMG_4039.jpg

IMG_4038.jpg

Ron and Jon arrived soon thereafter and we all scarfed down a meal at one of the local casinos…….Fred and Karl arrived later in the evening…….it was sprinkling and raining off and on Friday night…….I was happy to see it sprinkling (to knock down dust on Sat)…….and concerned when it started raining (snow/mud)…….

IMG_4045.jpg

We all hit the sack early and were giddy with anticipation about the ride over to Bar 10 on Sat……would there be snow?.....would there be mud?.......sure looked that way when we glanced over towards the mountains on Sat morning……

IMG_4047.jpg

Stay tuned for details/photos from the ride to Bar 10…….

Great write-up so far. Any idea how I view Crawdaddy's posts with out having to scroll back and forth to read it. Most other posts fit in my screen, but Crawdaddy must be doing his computer work on a jumbo-tron or something. B)

9 riders ready to roll on Sat morning….…….I’m not sure you could have a much broader range of riders/bikes……we had everything from dirt bikes to quads to quad-bikes (TW) to learner rigs (TTR)……

The gang:

Crawdaddy: KTM 620/520

Jarrett: KTM 620/520

Roger: KTM 640

Samir: WR 450

Rekha: TW200

Ron: 660 Raptor

Jon: YZ426

Fred: BMW 1150

Karl: TTR125L

I had the best of both worlds in some ways because I could select which bike I wanted to ride…….pavement or fire roads, I’ll take the 620 please…….rocks, snow, mud, I’ll take the 520 please……sweet!

I shuttled the non plated rigs over to the dirt road just out of town and then the rest of us got ready to roll…

IMG_4048.jpg

The ride starts out on a major dirt road towards the mountains:

IMG_4057.jpg

Soon we were in AZ. (Rekha on the TW)

IMG_4060.jpg

I opted to ride the 520 over to Bar 10 so Jarrett mounted up on the 620

IMG_4058.jpg

IMG_4054.jpg

Roger snapped this pic over his shoulder of Ron coming up on the quad:

IMG_4052.jpg

The dirt road started becoming narrower and narrower as we headed for the hills….

IMG_4061.jpg

I like signs like this…..

IMG_4062.jpg

Jarrett heading for the snow:

IMG_4063.jpg

Here comes Ron on the quad:

IMG_4065.jpg

Fred and Karl:

IMG_4070.jpg

We pulled over after a bit and Roger snapped this group photo:

IMG_4073.jpg

Time to head down/up into the snow……. The road led us up into the hills and before you knew it we were sloshing around in snow and wet dirt…….the mud would come later…..this was a fun stretch that eventually crested a pass with a view of the valley on the other side and miles and miles of…….nothing……..on the way over to the bar 10……..excellent!!! …….. no pictures in this stretch by Roger or Jarrett…..others may a have a few to share….

A few shots up top……before and during the snowball fight…..

Karl on the TTR 125L (longest two days of riding for him by FAR and he killed it on that little bike…..way to go Karl)

IMG_4102.jpg

Freddy on the Pig….in happier times……

IMG_4103.jpg

More to come……we’re about ~30% of the way over to Bar 10 at this point……then we started climbing again…..not as much snow……something much more unsettling……stay tuned…….

Snow on the horizon again……..

Samir pondering what the road ahead will bring…..

IMG_4110.jpg

We stopped for brunch along a scenic cliff as we inched closer to the snow…..first pic is the cliff above.......second is the cliff below where we sat/ate....

IMG_4118.jpg

IMG_4120.jpg

IMG_4121.jpg

Strega showing that the man in black also has a bit of “The Captain” in him

IMG_4122.jpg

Soon we were on our way once again……check out that big mushroom rock in front of Slowdown

IMG_4127.jpg

Then as we climbed up into the snow again it happened ……MUD…..not wet dirt….MUD….. and, unfortunately, I don’t seem to have any pictures (I thought Jarrett took some pictures but I can’t seem to find them – perhaps others have some good mud pics to share?......I’ll add more in if I can find them later)

I did find this one pic of Jon's counter Sprocket......pretty good representation of how thick the mud was in that stretch:

100_1397.jpg

We blew right by the remains of Butch Cassidy’s hideout…….we were flying and having too much fun playing in the mud….. (luckily Roger stopped and caught it on his camera)

IMG_4132.jpg

Jarrett, Jon, Ron and I just blew through a long stretch of wet/thick mud and waited for the others up top……..then waited some more……then I rode back down to see what the problem was……did I mention it got muddy?......that mud was nasty and the front fender on Freddy’s pig allows NO clearance between tire and fender…….and it isn’t easily removed……..so Fred’s front wheel literally locked up from the mud caked between his fender and tire……..he was pushing the bike along like a plow with no front wheel movement………none……..we resorted to using tire irons to periodically dig out the concrete like mud under his front fender and he’d do the best he could……eventually he was able to break free and make it up top/down to Bar 10……I’ll leave it to him to pipe in on that subject…….

I sent the others forward to Bar 10 while Strega and I helped Freddy……Rekha was having her own struggles because the mud caked pretty heavily on the TW200 as well…..I know Samir has pictures of this……

That’s it for Saturday from me…….Sunday would see the team divide in two…….6 riders headed back to Mesquite and 3 riders headed east to Page, AZ.…….stay tuned

Sunday morning started off with a hearty-artery clogging breakfast of scrambled eggs, pancakes, potatoes, bacon, cowboy coffee, etc…..perfect as that would have to hold us all day…..

We gathered for another group shot under the Bar 10 entry sign and were soon on our separate ways……

IMG_4152.jpg

Then, the 6 riders making the return trip to Mesquite headed down for a peak at the Grand Canyon while Roger, Jarrett and I headed out towards Toroweap, Fredonia, Page via the BBTR Sunday “optional” track (hard way track)……it’s not really that hard…….just another rocky “Big Bear” type hill climb but not the really nasty stuff at Big Bear……just a rocky ascent (easy for me to say, I was on the 520)…….likewise, the young bucks on the big bikes with bags didn’t seem to have any difficulty……they’re both good riders……in fact, I think Jarrett really enjoyed that stretch…..no pictures in this section because you had to keep moving…….lot’s of fun……(Ken, don’t skip the optional return when you head over with the BBTR club in a couple of weeks…..)

Soon we were up in the snow once again:

100_1401.jpg

We kept climbing up and up and the snow kept getting deeper and deeper….. we rode around in the snow for while following some tracks I’d set up to get us over to Toroweap……unfortunately we also ran into a few locked gates……after turning around once again we came across a group riding quads and asked them to go first down the next trail so we could ride in their tracks……..that made things a bit easier…..but it was still pretty darn slippery since you couldn’t see the ruts/rocks/ice….unfortunately Strega popped back up before Jarrett could snap a photo…..

100_1403.jpg

I wasn’t so lucky…..

IMG_4156.jpg

Once out of the snow we wound up on a major dirt road that leads over to Toroweap……..

IMG_4159.jpg

IMG_4164-1.jpg

IMG_4163-1.jpg

The views of the Grand Canyon at Toroweap are really impressive

IMG_4169-1.jpg

ChrisToroweap.jpg

100_1408.jpg

Once we left Toroweap we beat feet to Fredonia for gas and a bite to eat ……this ~60 mile stretch was just a high speed/major dirt road (Mt. Trumbull Rd.) ……beautiful in its remoteness and “whoop free”…….we didn’t snap many pictures that I can recall……we just hauled the mail……we did take one detour that I’d set up to break up the monotony of the major dirt road……..only to run into another locked gate after a few miles…..so we topped off the 520 by taking a bit of gas out of the mothership (the 620) and returned to the dirt road once again…..

IMG_4176-1.jpg

Once we gassed up in Fredonia we headed up to Kanab briefly for a bite to eat then cut across a couple of fun dirt roads (Winter and House Rock) over to Hwy 89/Page…….it was getting dark/cold now so we didn’t snap many pics but that stretch was really fun……I came across ~20(?) mule deer at one point and they headed up into the hills…

IMG_4184-1.jpg

Somewhere along Hwy 89 I noticed that Roger's headlight was out........so we put the man in black (literally) between us and somehow managed to sneak him into Page in the dark without being pulled over by the police........still haven't figured out if that was a loose wire or fuse or what......he had no headlight for the remainder of the trip.....

We rolled into Don’s place about 8pm…….haven’t figured out the Sunday mileage yet…….it was probably close to 200 for the day……FUN…...Don’s wife, Tish, prepared a scrumptious meal which we gladly consumed……then we sat around for a bit bench racing about the ride thus far and making plans for the Monday ride……more to come…..

Yeah those were not the happiest times. And here I thought PIGS actually LIKE MUD, well let me tell you they don't. There might have been a total of 4 miles of intermittent glue-mud. First little bit I blew through no problem, next little bit it got a bit squirrelly and I almost stuffed into a rock on the side of the road, next time I hit it I'm up on the pegs to have a bit more control over the squirming doing fine and then BLAM I'm down. WFT over?? Nothing strange going on right before that. Got (lots) of help from Roger picking up the pig, but its just not getting going very well. Somewhere around the 3rd or 4th pickup Roger notices the non-rotating front wheel. That explains the first thump I had - when the front tire stops spinning you go down. In that 4 mile stretch the bike was probably down at least a dozen times. Some of those were from a basically stopped state - did I mention there was no foot traction in that stuff and that it would stick about 3" thick to the bottom of your boots. Nothing like a slow controlled tipover that you can't stop after you've already had 'a few'. Well, we start thinking of a fender-ectomy to get past the gluemud problem, but to get the fender off we would have had to pull the front wheel and loosen the slider clamps which didn't seem like a good plan in that mud so we pushed on (literally - wish I had a ski for the front it would have been easier). We did take off two smaller screws which were holding down the sides on the fender and that helped get better access to dig out the mud.

Eventually we sent every one else off toward the Bar10, and Chris and Roger stayed back to help me wallow through the slime not knowing when we would reach the Bar10. Not long after that we got to the 'nasty wet' corner, but actually I made it through that without dropping it - and then promptly dropped it in the thicker goo just beyond. By this time I'm pretty spent, and the left saddle bag bottom bracket has broken off from repeated abuse. Luckily things firmed up and we were able to start riding.

We ended up reaching the Bar10 only about 15 minutes behind the rest of the group. We had gravel roads, rocks, river bed crossings, two track grassy trails, and a nice rocky downhill right before we reached the ranch and the only thing which brought the PIG to its knees was the !#^&!! MUD. Oh well - it was an adventure ride. Lots of thanks to Roger and Chris for helping me upright the pig numerous times B)B) Remind me again why I didn't take the 450 - although if it hadn't rained Friday afternoon it would have been no problem.

Now back to you regularly scheduled program......

Monday morning started out the same way Sunday night ended…….another scrumptious meal prepared by Tish……..we ran the bikes over to the local car wash and sprayed off ~100lbs of mud, picked up some motor oil for the 520 which was STILL spewing oil despite the seal change in Mesquite, and then stopped by the Honda dealership to see if Don’s neighbor, Gawin, wanted to go riding with us…….he said he was too busy and couldn’t make it so we returned to Don’s…….Roger tried to trouble shoot his light issues while Jarrett and I tended to his handlebars (too many wheelies loosened up the bar clamps on the 520…..we had to stop a few times Sunday afternoon to crank’em down…….applied some lock-tite and they were good to go again)

We were all set to take a drive in the Jeep over to Horseshoe Bend, etc. then come back for a ride……..suddenly Gawin walks up and says, “Let’s go”……..he managed to work a hall pass to play for a while…….so we ditched the Jeep plan and saddled up for a ride on the bikes over by Lake Powell……

Don had set an ambitious sightseeing agenda and let us a know it a few times

100_1420.jpg

Crawdaddy, Strega, Ron and Gawin lined up and ready to roll….

100_1425.jpg

I dub thee – “Rooster Rock”

Once we came down from the plateau Gawin returned to town/work and we headed out towards Alstrom Point above Lake Powell…….here’s a shot on the way to the point

100_1452.jpg

Alstrom Point is really impressive……..that’s Gunsight rock over my right shoulder and Navajo Mtn in the distance

100_1464.jpg

We stopped off at this rock on the way back to Page…….Don was nice enough to hold it up so it didn’t crush us….

100_1473.jpg

Roger was whining about hiking up to the rock from the bikes

100_1475.jpg

……made you just want to crush him…..

100_1477.jpg

Once we got back to Page we jumped in the Jeep and headed over to Horseshoe Bend which is minutes from Don’s house…….then it’s a quick ~.75 mile hike over to the Bend…..spectacular views

Then back to Don’s for yet ANOTHER great meal……..what a host and hostess…….Gawin joined us for dinner with his wife and we had a great time telling stories and bench racing about the day’s ride…..

More to come on the final day back to Mesquite…..

I've passed the baton over to Roger to post the trip report/photos for the final day since the bulk of the pictures on the final day were also taken with his new camera.......why a new camera?......perhaps he'll explain that too......along with the background on the cattleguard that sent all three of us off the road.......and the tale of the dreaded tow-strap.........I know he's tied up today so it may be a day or two before he can get to it.....

In the meantime, I think Jarrett and I will pop a cold one.....

Tuesday we headed out of Page early and got breakfast at Denny's hoping it would warm up a little bit. Had a nice breakfast and our first stop was at the Wahweep lookout:

Just before getting to Fredonia, Jarrett and I were riding side by side and saw a cattle guard up ahead with a really nice lip on it, prime for jumping. So we popped it into 4th gear, doing about 55mph and hit the cattle guard square on. The only problem, was the the road on the other side ducked away to the right in a HUGE hurry. I went off the trail to the left and started bushwacking and Jarrett's front tire hit my rear tire (he was on the inside) and he went down hard. I rode back to see if he was ok, and he was laughing, so that was a good sign. Not a real bright idea. Then I saw 2 sets of tracks in the dirt off to the side. I didn't think much of it till Crawdaddy said, "You guys make it ok on that cattle guard?" We laughed and told him what happened. He said the same guard got him too. Luckily it wasn't real rocky or we would have been in BAD shape. We got gas in Fredonia and had some snacks and got back on the road.

Shot of us headed down the hill toward CR-5 and to join in with the BBTR Bar 10 Sun PM track:

dscn0043.jpg

And then.......it happened. Crawdaddy was on the 520 and it just died. We couldn't get it started again. Pulled the seat/tank and rotated the carb to pull the bowl off and check needle, jets, etc. Everything looked ok. I suggested we pull the plug and check it, but no plug wrench between the 3 of us (oops). So we got the 520 back together, and started back tracking back to CR-5. As some of you may remember, my WR450 quit running on the Sun PM track of Bar 10 last year, and Crawdaddy towed me 57 miles to St George Utah. Well, I would have to tow Jarrett about 32 miles to St George, and Crawdaddy rode ahead to get the truck in Mesquite and come pick us up.

It was a great trip, too bad we still have yet to FINISH the Bar 10 ride....maybe next year!! I can't thank Zenosan and his wife Tish enough for their hospitality. They were incredibly gracious hosts, fed us incredibly well and had a nice warm place for us to sleep. Zenosan and his buddy Gawin took us on a great ride around Lake Powell and the surrounding area, and we had a really fun time. I'm a little sore, but I'm ready to go riding again!! If my plans change, I may do the Bar 10 trip in a couple weeks with some of you folks here, I hope I can make it because I HAVE to finish the Sun PM Route!!! B)

All of the pics can be found HERE

I don't have Samir's pics yet, but these are Jarrett, Zenosan, and my pics of the trip.

Chris / Roger,

Great write up and awesome pictures. Really nice country around Lake Powell. Easy see why Zenosan likes to spend so much time up there.

I bet this Post will motivate a lot of folks to head out on their own adventure. It’s sure got me fired up.

That was a scene that played out over and over again on this trip.......those cattle guards can be a lot of fun to jump and/or wheelie across (provided the road AFTER the guard is straight!).......I snapped the below photo of Roger and Jarrett along House Rock Rd.......very fun area between Fredonia and Page.........unfortunately the shutter snapped after Roger had already begun to drop his front wheel down.....you'd never guess the 620 ADV had a full gas tank when this shot was taken....
