1 Nov-2 Nov: Noobs Overnight Moto Camping Trip - Year Four

Recommended Posts

I have put this on three years in a row, let’s go for number four.

Priority number one is have fun.  If you have never camped off your motorcycle before, you’re going to want to try to make it to this event.  If you’re a seasoned camper, please join in if you can.  We have even had people bring a small camper before, that’s fine.

The idea is this: A not too long and not difficult route that includes some pavement and some dirt with your bike loaded up with the gear you plan to use for moto camping.  We stay at a primitive campground, no power or water but they have bathroom facilities.  You can see how your bike handles with the gear loaded up and how to set it up, along with testing it sleeping on it, cooking on it, etc.  You can see what other people use, get ideas and suggestions.  Meet up Saturday afternoon, ride to the campground, set up, hang out, head home Sunday morning.

I have two dates that work for me, Oct 25-26 or Nov 1-2.  Let me know what days work best for the people interested.

I will post the details in a reply.  If you don’t have camping gear but are interested, ask!  Lots of people here have extra stuff for loan or maybe to sell/give away.

Hope we have some interest in this event.  It’s been fun every time.

I don't have camping gear, but I'd be interested.  I want to prepare for next year's Stagecoach Rally.

My buddy showed up a few years ago with a milk crate strapped to the back of his TW200 with a bunch of random gear.  People have brought Walmart gear, it works.  I bet you can round up some stuff to have a good time without breaking the bank.  Hope to see you there.

Here's a link from a few years ago, will likely follow the exact same route.  If you want to ride more you can "choose your own adventure" and show up at the campground or ride early, show up at the start point and finish up with whoever shows up.  I will have to see when the time change is happening this year and may adjust the start time accordingly.  The sausages at the Warner Springs gas station are always a good option if you don't want to cook at the campsite, I will arrange with the station if there's enough interest.

I worry about the reliability of the SL350, but I rode it 60 miles on Tuesday and part of that ride was pretty rough.  With a pretty basic tool kit I can fix nearly anything on that bike.

I should have no trouble rustling up some gear, there's plenty of time.  The trick will be fastening everything to the bike, but some of the guys at the shop (I work at a bike shop) are into bikepacking, so they are used to packing pretty light for overnight trips.

I think about selling my camping gear. Hit me up and let me know what you look for. I  don't think, that I be able to go Bike Camping again.

I think I'm gonna lock it in for Nov 1-2.  Nov 2nd is daylight savings time so we get an extra hour of sunlight on the camping day and an extra hour of sleep.

I will post up on the calendar and on the FaceBook group in a day or two.

Not sure if I remember how to ride and my gear has probably been eaten by moths and I don’t usually do stuff on weekends with the mobs of working people but I’m thinking about it.

I realized today that my bike is leaking way more oil than I expected.  The good news is it is all from the top end, right side, and parts are identical to the extremely popular 70's CB350 engines, but with my skills and budget it will probably be a few month to get this done properly.  If anyone has recommendations for re-building old heads and honing cylinders locally let me know.  I'm probably going to miss this trip.

I have a reliable street bike, I could probably get by with dual sport tires but I just put fresh street rubber on!

I did a pre-run two years ago on my Yamaha FZ6 with street tires, did just fine.  You could bypass the dirt and meet up at the gas station or Mesa Grande store.

You can also just drive up there.  Had a few people do that just to hang out around the campfire and hang out/meet people.  Always good to have someone drive up to bring firewood, beer, steaks, lobster tails, sushi, caviar, champagne....😁

Did you do the dirt on the FZ as well?  As long as it's not rocky I can handle it.

And don’t forget the fresh tuna steaks! I’m going to check my calendar. Last year was a blast!

Yes, it wasn't bad at all that year.  I haven't been up those roads for a while but they are usually in good shape.  I guess I have to go pre-run again, stop at the Warner Springs store for a sausage sandwich and a tall beer and enjoy them at the campground.  Maybe next week, I could post it up if anyone wants to go but it will be weekday around 1100 probably.

Oh yeah, that fish was very good.  A few people had brought stuff to share, I ate three or four dinners that night!

I made a post to the calendar, if you're planning to go or interested, you should be able to put your intention on there.

The gas station in Warner Springs has really good sausage sandwiches and has been taking care of us with that the last few years.  If you're interested in getting some let me know so I can give them a heads up.  I have been picking up two the last few years, easier than cooking in camp but some people do want to try out their cooking gear.

I hope to pre-run this in the next week or so, will try to give a heads up on when if anyone wants to join on that.  Mid-week between10-2 probably.

Having spent time and conversed with you, I know the truth. I will bring crayons to explain it next time I see you

Dammit, I will miss this again. I am having eye surgery next week and will be sitting face down with no activity for the next 2 - 3 weeks and no riding for a couple of months.
