1997 KTM300EXC (overlap project)

Recommended Posts

Thinking this will be my spare machine, for friends etc.. Bike is 99% all there and by word of PO it was running fine when stored in garage. 2 strokes with their oil in fuel tend to remain in good order.

I am hoping to do a major clean up job with minimal parts requirements and get er dialed rather quickly.  Will need disassembly of the major structures to replace the frame.

Will look similar to this one when done, for reference.

THAT! Turns me on. I think that’s a little retro, and a lotta hotness. Good on ya brother. Put me on the list of ‘borrowers’ for that thing! Good lord, might make me wanna actually own a skinny bike.

My friend had that bike, The ECU can crack if the steering stops were not updated if I can remember correctly.   Great power too.

I will take the before shots soon. she is frame/chassis with wheels and front end removed I will put all back on to get me a "roller" so I can more easily power wash for the pre work

silly me I never shot the before shots....... anyway I pressure washed , after making her a temp roller, and the teardown is flowing. My hold up is no frame paint for the new frame!!! I had to order what appears to be a good match-Krylon Metallic gray metal (something like that). BTW brake clean washes off Ohlins lable graphics... Ebay has Ohlins replica stickers..

So not going too deep, but, new plastics full enduro look with head and taillight set up, graphics, new seat, new bars, tires with mousses (full FIM set up), new used RH radiator, B8EIX iridium plug, new Twinair filter, and more OEM stuff gaskets for remove and inspect of covered insides. Maybe a new pipe (OEM one is badly dinged and twisted) . Worst discovery Ignition box is cracked do to lack of steer stop clearance.......simple but a known issue from the time period....owners not paying enough attention to detail. Hopefully the electronics are not compromised.

Hopefully it’s still good.  Maybe seal it with epoxy.  Can’t believe I remembered that

New used set for RH Radiator on the way as well as a set of SX coolant hoses (no thermostat). I have always removed T-stats from my racing enduro/dirt bikes, for me it's just another potential failure item. Less is more for offroad. New bars are Moose brand Nekken very nice! All controls will remain as they are, there is MS "easy" clutch. never a fan of anything other than OEM all else is OEM. Coolant will be my standard Evans Non-aqueous, bullet proof stuff. Gearbox oil will be RedLine 80w , this stuff is magic. Mix will be EU standard 2% (50:1) with what I have on hand, Motorex or Maxima. Plug will be B8EIX iridium.  Jetset will be OEM or FMF spec . I am not changing the OEM pipe and silencer which would drop a huge weight off the back, yet anyway. Don't want to get too spendy here. So for potential buyers I will recommend at least a silencer the OEM one is a bazooka and super heavy.(it may happen as I go into final assembly there are good FMF Turbinecore choices on ebay)

Quick (re)search reveals a few companies here and in EU build them (or have them) to order in the form fit and close to finish as the OEM Kokusan units for @ 230 bucks

Update photos, moving along well now. replacement chassis painted and installed engine (after bigtime clean up). Front end is installed , seat in work. had to install the fender just to make me feel good (still need fender bushings-on the way). Decided to leave the boots on , but have the OEM type open plastic fork guards as well. PS the boots are OEM catalog Marzocchi fork boots. Lubed most of linkage , will finish when I pull the wheels for tire installation. Offers anyone????(hahahaha).

National City Motorcycles is my go to place for parts and logistics .

worked the rear fender assy. ,got it good now. did another mock up to stay the motivation course. She's looking good and proper. Blackbird Graphic Italia gripper seat is in modern KTM ORN, but that's that!! Carbs is done just need vent hoses installed , airbox is being cleaned up so soon the all the mechanical stuff will be dialed. She still needs some electric work for lights and of course ignition. Will go ahead and install a new FMF Gnarley Pipe......$$$ (budget is running away a little..) . Have mousses and tires ready to install*. Hand grips ready to install. waiting for throttle tube.

* on the garage shelf stuff, new Rear Shinko 216MX that I wasn't going to use on the other bikes , slightly used front Michelin Enduro Medium and all sorts of scrap mousses whole and pieces to stuff

How much stator output on that model?  I have considered getting some lights on the 02 KTM 250 that I have in the garage.

Flywheel should be off by weeks end, so coils testing and electronics testing asap. I have a new ignition black box, but want to be sure all the other components are in good order.

I’m not saying I have time and space for it. But I sure as hell want it. Maybe if I took it off some sweet jumps …
