Plans for New Club Event & Other SDAR Stuff

We (not the royal we) at SDAR are contemplating holding a riding event this spring.  It would be called Mountain Dash and would tour dirt and paved roads in east San Diego County. The organization needs some operating money and is looking to bring all our friends back together.  We are also considering making the event a benefit for the land use organization San Diego Off-Road Coalition.  We are thinking of having a one day poker run starting in Escondido, going over Palomar Mountain with either up Nate Harrison or south grade. Checkpoint on top, then down east grade, 79 to Mesa Grande, take dirt over by Lake Southerland (possible checkpoint).  Then up towards Julian and turn in Pine Hills to dirt road all the way to Viejas Casino area (possible checkpoint).  Then over to Buckman Springs and to Corral Canyon (possible checkpoint at 4 corners)  Choose routes at CC.  Then back to Buckman Springs, then west on 94 to Marron Road and up and over Otay Mountain (checkpoint at top) At bottom of Otay Mountain we end at Pio Pico Campground.  We rent group site and find who has winning poker hands, raffle and BBQ.  Anyone can tent camp there.  We are considering charging $100 per entry including event T shirt and dinner.  We are considering giving one raffle ticket per entry and getting some great ADV prizes.  Also prizes for best 5 card stud poker hand, second best hand and worst hand.  All proceeds would be split with San Diego Off-Road Coalition and their fight to keep public land open for off-road recreation.
Planning meeting coming soon.  Probably on the 22nd.  More information on that soon.
Seems like a good solution to running an event, since it's a bit too late to plan the usual Desert Dash.  Thoughts?

Hmmm...disappointing that there isn't more enthusiasm shown than this.  I thought I'd get at least a few more people here who would be interested in participating either as a volunteer or an entrant.

I am in. I look forward to being an entrant, but i am available to assist with anything before the event. I am sure there will be many others, they just need to visit the site 15 times a day like some of us!!

Sounds like a good idea.  Let's keep it as simple as possible.  These things take a lot of planning and help to make them happen.  I will help if we get enough volunteers to do it right.

Let's do this!

I need to find a good place for a meeting.  I'm researching  that right now (like some restaurant, pub or brewery), but if anybody knows of a good spot, feel free to chime in with it.

Can definitely help schedule dependent.

Maybe the outdoor stone brewery patio area if that can  be booked? I know kind of far for some but I don't know of many other spaces large enough to accommodate this rowdy bunch

I need to know how many people will actually be able to show up next Monday, 11/22 for dining at 6, discussion at 7 with Ed Stovin from SDORC.

Mimi no body looks at this website anymore. I think I look at it twice a week . Post on our Facebook page and it will probley go threw the roof. My opinion. Ask around to see what others think about what I just said.

Yeah, that's the main problem.  I feel that the FB page drives people away from this website, rather than to it.  This website is unique and independent.  It falls under no "big tech" social engineering guidelines.  People are lazy about social media, and would rather  stay over there where they have more anonymity and can be less directly involved.  This website is a wealth of club history, adventure stories and tech discussions, all laid out in easily searchable subforums.  Facebook pages are more like easily gobbled up junk food.

I'm in for the meeting next Monday.

I think we need to consider this event may not happen without serious commitment from enough folks to pull it off.  With as little activity the site seems to be generating I think it will be difficult to drum up enough support to run an event like this.

If in fact the FB page is where the majority of activity is then that is going to be the future of the "group".  I would hate to see the site go down as I do not and will not participate on FB.

I’ll try and make Monday(?), and assist in the event if the dates work out. Will we be doing the event with ORC, and getting volunteers from them too?

And that's really why I wanted to help run the event....to make enough to keep the website going.  But if nobody cares about using the website, then the effort to keep it going is pointless.

Well...I think the website has some rebuilding to do and a deficit to overcome. I'm unconvinced FB will eclipse social sites like this completely, but it's going to take time before confidence is rebuilt and people feel welcome here again.

Events like you're trying to put together are one of the many ways to help that happen. I'm scheduled out, and can't participate in this one- but that does not rule out others in the future.

That would certainly seem to be logical, and I am in total agreement....but we don't have the money to buy the time needed to get the website back to any semblance of its former glory.
