Recommended Posts

I found this crack! How can I fix this? I’m going to need help with this one.

Rear subframe at the joint to the main frame left side tube under the seat / behind the tank.

Remove all parts/pieces/wiring harness from the area.  Remove the battery and the CDI.  Strip the paint and rust from the tubing.  Have a competent welder patch it up.

Thats a serious enough crack might want to see if you can sleeve the tube (tube inside the frame) or at least get some sort of gusset on there to help reinforce the weld and HAZ (heat affected zone).
Tig weld would be the best course of action.

Your going to want to remove everything from the surrounding area and all the electronic bits to protect them from the welding current (Batt, CDI and such).

what kind of bike it is, cant tell from the pics.

I've been wanting to learn how to weld! Feels like a perfect, "i learn better by failing" project.

Yeah given the critical nature of the join would not recommend.

But knock youself out, if it fails while riding you might actually

knock yourself out

Sumtin to think about.

If you strip it all the way down that kind of repair I can do in a couple hours with the tig welder easy enough

Steel Frame TTR250. Middle pic shows the where corrosion went forward on the frame. Will need to cut out that gusset plate then re-gusset & fix it.

The TTR250 is the same model Lois Pryce took from London to Cape Town. 10,000 miles of ADV

Does it seem like that particular spot is a collection spot for moisture of some kind ?  Causing the corrosion like that ?   Maybe good idea to drill a drain hole there ?

It was full of dirt and rust, I think it’s not a common problem but I was thinking the same as you.  A drain hole was added!

The bike did have a surfboard rack on that side. Easily could have had salty wetsuits and/or towels that drained salt water on that corner.

The axle tubing has thicker sidewalls than stock so it should be even stronger

While I appreciate that, my buddy from the military is the welder.  I know how to weld but I don’t do it enough to be proficient, nor do I have great welding equipment.

Always great to know people, and we have some good welders in this group too.
