As you all know Corral Canyon OHV area is closed until further notice.

The USFS is asking for Volunteers to help.

Corral Cyn link

The Forest has talked with key members of the local OHV community about

the impacts of the fire,

the need to physically construct barriers to define the designed routes and reconstruct the ones obliterated by fire fighting efforts,

the need for volunteer, peer based, OHV patrols in the area,

the need for volunteers to help install/maintain fence

and the need to educate users.

Before Corral Canyon can re-open, the damage from the fire must be repaired. We are looking for volunteers to help in this effort. If you or your club are willing to volunteer please contact Richard Tull, OHV Program Manager, at (619) 445 6235 ext 3451 rtull@fs.fed.us

If you want to help let them know! I did!

Corral Canyon Volunteer Work Days December 9th and 16th

Hello,

You are receiving this message because you indicated that you would like to

be part of the volunteer efforts to help reopen the Corral Canyon OHV area

which was damaged by the Horse fire this summer. The dates of December 9th

and 16th are both Saturdays so we will be most likely to fit these days

into peoples schedules. I don't have the details of the work itself at this

time but we will be evaluating the needed work and decide what parts

volunteers can help with between now and then. For now just set aside one

or both dates and I will provide more information as details become

available. Feel free to forward this message or pass on the info to anyone

else you think might be interested.

I will be on vacation in Baja for the next couple of weeks ( the Baja 1000

is this week) so I won't be responding to messages until I get back.

Thanks for getting involved

Thanks John, I propose a ride planned for those of us in the greater San Diego area on both days from the Otay area to Corral Canyon. We don't all have to do both days but it'd be great if we could all do at least one day. I had a great time riding out there many years ago and I'm fiending to get back. Expect me there on behalf of the group on the 9th.

I hope to see you all there.

Jon

P.S. carguy, nice tank, I put the Clarke 4.7 on and happily rode 170 miles and still haden't switched to reserve.

From San Diego Off Road Coalition...........

Help reopen Corral Canyon!

We have an opportunity to help the Cleveland National Forest reopen the Corral Canyon OHV area. As you may know, Corral Canyon has been closed since 79% of it was destroyed by the Horse Fire last July. The Forest is working hard to reopen as much as they can as soon as they can, but they need our help.

We can resume riding at Corral Canyon as soon as adequate fencing is in place to keep us on the designated trails and out of the burned areas. That’s where we come in.

December 9 and 16, both Saturdays, have been designated as volunteer days to help install fencing. If you are interested in helping with this worthwhile effort, please let us know by replying to this e-mail. We will provide details to those that reply as soon as they become available.

Let’s show our friends at the Cleveland NF that we are good partners, and let’s get Corral Canyon back open!

KTMrad; did you get my email? If not , here is an idea.....

Since I have been told to stay off of the bike for awhile by the doc I am offering to help out on the 9th by showing up with my 4runner and trailer. I have some tools needed for fence building. I would also be willing to help haul material and gear to the site as well.

I could also bring a cooler & grill and haul some gear for the guys who will be riding their bikes there.

let me know.

There's a possibility I might make the December 19th date.

For your info, SDORC is organizing this, I am not involved in the organization of it. I just posted the info about it.

I feel we can just show up as available. I will get the particulars from Richard this week. He may be overwhelmed with support to answer too many e-mails.

There are only the 2 days scheduled for Volunteering at this time.

The days are the 9th & 16th of December, both are Saturdays.

Everyone can showup on whatever day they can donate time. I plan to be there both days.

BTW, I will be jeepin there to carry tools and supplies unless things change.

Stay tuned!! B)

Thanks John, please keep us updated if they'd like us to bring anything and to where we should stage for the "fencing operation"

Aaron, If you can pull that off I'll be glad to donate. Good to see you were out in the dirt this weekend.

I'm going to post a ride on the 9th from Otay Mt. out to the clean up. Look for it in the Informal Rides area.

Carguy,

could you pass me the info or ask Richard Tull what time and what tools are needed for this Saturday the 9th.

I have a bunch of tools on hand and can get access to a bunch more if needed.

I spoke with Aaron aka Chief Gunner.... If this is a go.....he and I will be driving my truck and his trailer out there on Saturday the 9th and will have a variety of tools and supplies including a BBQ and coolers for lunch. We both will not be bringing our bikes. I will fill a 5 gallon H2o jug with ice and water and my cooler will be full of Tecate so if you no like......bring something else. Aaron was talking Costco burgers, hot dogs, and we can do beans and chips or something. Doesn't have to be too posh. We do need to know how many will show up this Saturday......so we can figure the food part out.

I will have pretty of room in the truck for anything that you want to throw in there. Those that are ridding in might want to throw a gear bag with work boots and what not in. I'll have a bunch of heavy duty trash bags for clean up work too.

So please let us know who will make it this Saturday the 9th.

Thanks,

Aaron ~MESCALERO~

OHV Volunteer days information

Hello,

Our volunteer work days scheduled for December 9th and 16th at Corral

Canyon OHV area are to proceed as planned. To make these work days as

effective (and fun) as possible I have put together a list of projects and

information for everyone to look over so you can be prepared and have an

idea what work each of you wants to participate in.

INFORMATION

Food and Water:

The Cleveland National Forest will provide drinking water. Volunteers

should plan on bringing their own food (brown bag etc).

Sunscreen, Bug repellent

Make sure to bring both of these. It is winter but it is better to have

them and not need them right?

Work Clothes, sturdy boots, Eye protection and Gloves

Safety is our BIGGEST priority. Be prepared to work safely.

INITIAL RE-OPENING PROJECTS

You can decide for yourself what activity(s) you want to participate in. So

far we have identified the following:

Marking and fencing the temporary boundary along the burn side of trails 3

and 3A

As part of the phased re-opening of Corral Canyon the southwestern edges of

trails 3 and 3A will be used as a temporary boundary to keep off-roaders on

the open side of the burned area. The burn area is undergoing extensive

erosion control and rehab work so the recreating public will need to be

kept out of the closed portion of the OHV area to allow work to proceed.

This allows the public to utilize the areas unaffected by the fire related

operations and allows crews and equipment to move freely inside the rehab

area. Volunteers wishing to help on this project need to have gloves, boots

and eye protection at a minimum and are encouraged to bring pliers and any

fencing related hand tools they want to use. Moving and staging fence

materials along the installation route will also be an activity to help

with. The temporary boundary line will be marked and flagged and

installation of posts and fence wire will proceed at whatever rate we can

manage.

Preparing the Kiosk at Four Corners Staging area for sign panel replacement

The weathered sign panels at Four Corners are due for replacement and the

old ones will need to be removed. This is an easy but important project.

Cleanup at Bobcat and Corral Canyon Campgrounds

Both campgrounds have been sitting idle and need some cleaning up. This is

another easy but very important project.

Setting up fencing at the beginning of the Spur Meadow trail to maintain

the fifty inch wide maximum vehicle width.

During the fire suppression effort the Spur Meadow trail was bulldozed for

use as a contingency line. Until the tread can be fully restored both ends

of the trail will receive temporary fence installations that will ensure

that the trail can remain a cycle trail by maintaining the fifty inch width

restriction.

Evaluating “Adopt a trail routes for improvements to be done by Trails

Unlimited

The Espinoza trail was also bulldozed during the Horse fire suppression

effort and it is scheduled to have tread replaced by Trails Unlimited this

winter. A portion of the trail will remain closed during the initial Corral

Canyon re-opening phase because it is within the burn rehab area and will

require extensive work. The portion outside that area will be re-opened but

will also need significant work to restore it to the recreation resource

it is supposed to be. Club members can bring GPS receivers and digital

cameras to record locations of trail features they would like to see

incorporated into the restoration work. They can create a description of

the desired feature as well as a diagram that corresponds to the GPS data

and photos. This information will be passed on to Trails Unlimited and

providing there are no unforeseen design or erosion control problems we

will do our best to incorporate them into the route.Help us create the

experience you want.

Removing the “Dead Bronco

On the 9th we will want to check the current status of the abandoned Ford

Bronco that was going to be removed last season but was not due to fire

danger. If the vehicle is found to be movable an effort will be made on the

following Saturday (12/16/06) to get it out of there.

Checking for damaged and/or missing signs

Fire damaged, missing and weathered signs are all scheduled for

replacement. Bring a GPS and a digital camera and go on a sign hunt to help

us create an accurate list of needed signs.

Other Ideas

Anyone who knows of work that they can do that is not listed above should

bring what they need to accomplish the work and be able to explain what it

is (and why it is important).

Where and When to meet

We will be meeting at the Four Corners staging area at 9:00 am on both the

9th and 16th.

The main gate will be manned and only volunteers will be allowed through

since the area is still under a closure order. No recreational riding is

going to be available although there may be opportunities for guided tours

of the burn area.

I have some RSVP’s already but I would like to hear from everyone who plans

to be there this week so that I can do some more detailed logistics

planning. (Clubs can just send a single message with a head count in it). I

will need volunteer agreements from everyone who does not have a current

one with us. If in doubt fill out another one.

I am sending out an electronic version of our standard volunteer

agreement. Please get these filled out and returned to me as soon as

possible. You can send them back electronically or bring them with you this

Saturday.

(See attached file: individual volunteer agreement corral canyon.rtf)

I am looking forward to seeing all of you at Corral Canyon the next two

weekends.

Thanks for stepping up and getting involved.

 Here is something I did this morning, hope you guys don't mind but there are 3,000 sailors aware of the effort now. I will organize the military volunteers and set it up with them by COB thursday.

Should be able to muster up a some good sailors!

This is the email I sent and the reply from our top dog (Command Master Chief) who sent it out to the entire command...

Here is a great opportunity to do some community volunteer work. If you are interested please get a hold of GMC(SW) GORSKI and let him know. V/R CMC

Subject: Community Service Opportunity for Off Road Enthusiasts

Good morning Master Chief. I have a community service opportunity I wanted to run by you for dissemination to the Command. I am a member of a local off road motorcycle riding club called "San Diego Adventure Riders" and we are doing a semi organized event to help restore one of the most popular Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) riding areas in East County San Diego near lake Morena. The place is known as Coral Canyon and it has been closed due to fire damage from the Cedar fire in '03. We are looking for help with getting the riding area open to the public once again.

This Month the group plans on helping out on the 9th and 16th. The type of work we will be doing will be installing fencing, cleaning up campgrounds and trails. Anyone here at SWRMC who likes to explore the backcountry or camping and would like to help out are welcome to come on out.

I have attached a couple of links for your review. One is the volunteer form and the other is a thread on the website that details the events.

I think you would agree that this would be an outstanding opportunity for those interested to help project a positive Navy image to our community.

Here is the form: http://www.dualsport-sd.com/forums/index.p...=post&id=69

Here is the link to the website that details what we are planning :http://www.dualsport-sd.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=265

Thank you for considering this.

Very Respectfully

GMC(SW) Aaron Gorski

Just got back from the SDORC DEC. meeting and the Corral Canyon OHV area fence repair came up. They are advising groups of volunteers to contact SDORC and get on a list and time to even be able to enter the area. They are only allowing so many helpers to enter the area at any given time. I hope this information helps SDAR volunteers plan their arrival the DOC.

I am in for the 9th. I am still waiting for parts for my bike, if they show up I will be trailering it. The swelling in my knee has gone down and I am getting around O.K. If anyone from north county is going and you want me to haul something for you, give ma a call. I am driving my truck if someone wants a lift. Does any one have gps numbers for the staging area? Or at least good directions from north county.
