350thumper 336 Posted September 17, 2020 Did some troubleshooting on this 05 crfx 450 for a friend of a member . Here's how I diagnosed the spark issue so hopefully you can save money and DIY if you ever need spark. First thing was to check the volts at the battery and get that charging...also examine all connection and terminals for cleanliness.. Second thing is to notice if any aftermarket wiring or connectors are on the bike and examine every inch of that wiring. Or disconnect . This particular bike has a aftermarket dual sport lighting kit. Third , I had to go under the light to check for corroded connectors and tested conductivity of the curcuit. Checked all connectors and inspected cond'n of the loom. The aftermarket kit connectors aren't water proof, he's what happens... They separate & degrigade . The corrosion on the main curcuit breaks the connections. Had to by pass the connectors here and there. Solider and heatshrink helps here. Also seal with gasket seale to water-proof.. Remember that the lighting kit doesn't control spark, unless you have aftermarket ign key switch connected to kill wire. This bike did checked that, it was solid. so had to keep looking for a more serious electrical issue. Came over to the ICM tested the starter relay curcuitry receptical with pocket tester and had 12 volts everywhere and ground was good. Yanked out the ICM and my Spidey senses started tingling.. first thing I noticed is the secondary curcut was out of it's loom.and that the alum subframe was supporting the wiring harness . In my mind I'm thinking , black and white wire from ICM means kill switch wire... Sniffed around , I could feel that I was on to something. Put on my glasses from the 99¢ store. And Cha ching! Look at how small the exposed section of wire is on this kill electrode.. It was burried under all the ICM connectors , rubbing against the frame causing an intermittent spark issue.. repaired it. Bike fired right up.. Hope this helps , thanks for watching.
simicrintz 177 Posted September 17, 2020 I hate electrical and wiring the most! That said, I am putting 2 Chevy Volt Lithium batteries in a golf cart; WTH was I thinking?! Good for you for finding the culprit!
tntmo 887 Posted September 17, 2020 Nice job! Sometimes you feel like you got lucky, but it's not luck if you are using your troubleshooting skills and your experience.
