Personally, I prefer the earbud version.  People have various opinions about the Boefang radios, but they are way inexpensive.

Buy the Baufeng UV5-R on Amazon. Much cheaper than Rugged for basically the same radio. Rumor is that RR Baufeng is now locked out of the ham band per recent FCC ruling so it won't work with SDAR frequency. There's probably a way around that but just get the Amazon one and avoid the headache.

Packaage deal:

Or Just the radio:

Thanks for the insights, I've been reading through the communications section trying to figure it all out. Those Bao Feng radios are much cheaper than I expected, looks like $300 will get me set up with everything

I came home tired, sore, and ready for the next one.

It's not too often the Governor goes down, but when he does, his friends make sure to get pics and laugh.

You know you're with friends when you can roast each other on occasion. PMB and CID have some payback coming. Nothing major but you'll know it when the Oracle strikes back....

If I get the BaoFeng from Amazon would this kit work https://www.ruggedradios.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1083&products_id=1378 or do I need this kit https://www.ruggedradios.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1083&products_id=586 with a separate jumper? I think this is the jumper I would need https://www.ruggedradios.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=34_36&products_id=98 ?

This kit  https://www.ruggedradios.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1083&products_id=1378 will work fine. The other kit/combination uses a different post-to-talk plug. This kit uses an RCA type plug which works pretty well- lots of folks using them.

Thanks for the clarification, sorry to turn this into a radio thread. Back to your regularly scheduled ride report

Sorry Baggs one more add to the hijacked thread...DWreck91 I use the RR set up that Paul gave you the link to and I like it mucho. I do recommend purchasing the extended life radio battery for $30! It gets you through a lot of chatter with the Breakfast Club gang...or maybe don't buy that battery?!

Ha,  my drop was an GPS fall in the Deep Sand.  Only bruised my ego.  June Wash has 3 different canyons;  hard to make snap decisions with 7 Monsters behind you.   Glad to provide some excitement.    👀

Or just a cheap pair from Cycle Gear, but you definitely want to wear shin/knee guards. I’m not an ATGATT guy but I would never ride off road without knee guards.

Luckily I already own knee pads, I always know I should put them on but it’s just so easy not to. I’ll have to put them with my boots so I get reminded every time. I don’t think the braces are in the cards quite yet, they are just outrageously expensive. Maybe when the knee pads need replacement it’ll be easier to justify

Tried and true...hell of a price... though my 60 YO knees say they are worth every centavo.  https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/riding-gear/asterisk-ultra-cell-2.0-knee-brace-pair-p

<Gulp!>.... about the price of Shoei's latest greatest. . .

Then again, lifes a lot harder without knees.

Last year I pogoed my foot on the ground during a turn and twisted my ACL and MCL just a tad. That "just tad" left me a bit worried for about three weeks. When the sensation finally went away, I considered myself very lucky.

I was checking and found that the total cost for a MCL / ACL Tear/Surgery plus followup visits is currently $68,000.00 dollars. I guess $700.00 for a set of high quality Knee Braces is literally an ounce of prevention.

Adding to the knee brace database...

These are the ones I ended up getting after seeing that the bill for some relatively-simple broken ribs was over $90K:

https://www.mobiusbraces.com/store/x8-knee-brace/

Yeah, super expensive but I learned the lesson about protecting body parts. After reading a bunch of reviews, I felt that any of the major ones will provide protection; I liked the cinch cables on these.
