Bagstrs Trivial Mechanical and Equipment Issues

Questions, Questions.

All these parts are made by the same manufacturer ( CPC ) plastic or  metal.  My stock aluminum male fitting from the throttle body fits these plastic plumbing female fittings. Does this brass unit fit the stock aluminum fitting?  And DSM8, are you buying locally at some auto supply?

https://www.cpcworldwide.com/

I ordered mine from beemer boneyard almost 10 years ago. The site you see the business card about.

Paul,  The right angle fitting needs to be threaded??

Nope.

There are threaded options available, like the fine example of photography demonstrates. But our application uses the barbed type like the image with the business card. And one can buy the 90-degree male version separately- you don't need to buy the whole kit. On my bike the 90 degree male is on the bike itself, and the female part (with the thumb-lever-thing) is on the tank side. I have three tanks, so it was not an inexpensive proposition.

There was a post here (or KTM talk) where one could buy these CPC fittings from an aquarium supply or somewhere MUCH cheaper. But I can't find that post.

I believe there are two versions of the Quick Disconnect in circulation; with and without the backflo piston.  The backflo version would be needed for a non-fuel pump tank. Some say the O-rings from the units bought in the plumbing department are not fuel durable and the Vitron type are needed. Personally, I have had no issue.  Amgems sent me some of the official O-rings and I carry them for back-up.

You really should use a viton oring. N-buna is not that resistant to gasoline & methanol. Fuel will make it swell making connecting\disconnecting more difficult with an increased chance of tearing the oring.

https://www.amazon.com/2-011-V7-Viton-Ring-Pack/dp/B01D0BAYO2/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=2-011+viton&qid=1580325115&sr=8-1

Here's a place that will save a little $$ over Motion Pro for the fittings:

This is the exact fitting that KTM uses (and charges $50 for):

Thanks Randy,

That may explain why the stock KTM came with a black fitting.   But,,,,   If you don't have a backflo piston the only oring is on the stock male side from the throttle body.

I need to find the stock female side that came off the bike.

And Paul,

My mistake, thinking the right angle was from the tank as mine is.

I need to find the Amgems Fuel Line discussion from a few years past.

Oh and to derail this thread even further let's talk fuel filters (in tank). So the stock filter in the tank is a Mahle KL97. I have had two buddies have this filter fail on them. The most recent was on a 2017 350EXC just a few weeks ago. The filters are splitting at the weld seam. The last one was a small leak that dropped the fuel pressure down into the mid 30's. Bike would run but had all kinds of weird behavior.

So options? Well Bestdualsportbikes guy (Formerly ktmandhusky) sells a replacement for $90. It's anodized aluminum with a replaceable  ($29) 10 micron cellulose element.

image.png.6ebbbc049ff4c254151549fe7a47d5ac.png

Frankly it's seems overpriced and overkill to me. That and BDS has a less than stellar history. People either love him or hate him:)

So to another alternative that Mr Bowers pointed me to:

Earls Supply

Element is cleanable sintered bronze type. Replacement element is $7. I've got one of these on order and will update when I get it in hand but on paper looks like a viable option.

There is an oring in the coupler (tank side) fitting for the shutoff valve that's inside of it. It is not field replaceable so I highly recommend ordering it with the viton oring. I think the metal version Paul showed may be field serviceable. The black fitting I showed IS the stock female (coupler) fitting. It's made of black acetal and has  a viton oring inside.

I suspect it's no coincidence the BestDualSport AND the Earl's are both 10 micron.

I get the CPC from MSC industrial supply and have a couple sets with hose, for this. This way I can run the bike with the tank off and can pump gas to someone on the way.

Well I don't know. The Mahle is 40 micron so 10 is kinda overkill. Mr KTM&Husky says if you use his filter you don't need to run the 10 micron that's downstream in the quick disconnect. Ummm...no thanks. Personally I would rather have a 30 micron in the Earls. They do sell a 30 micron element.  All the Mahle filter does is keep large stuff out of the pressure regulator. The downstream 10 micron protects the injector. I have the Zipty 10 micron at the disconnect.

For fuel you should use the "valve" version only. If not, fuel will spill allover and it stinks in the garage. not even thing about  Fuelgas and your hotwater heater in the garage combination.

In stock configuration KTM uses the insert (the injector side) without a valve. Only the coupler (tank side) has a valve. Really don't need one on the insert as there's not a whole lot of fuel downstream of there.

Found the Stock unit

Yep. That's this part:

https://www.freshwatersystems.com/products/plcd17005vb-valved-in-line-hose-barb-black-coupling-body-5-16-id-barb-viton-o-ring

Have one sitting in my toolbox. When I built up my second tank setup I used one from freshwater. It's identical to the KTM part except is doesn't cost $44!

Page 1 & 2 give the details for the O-rings   KTM Talk - Amgems

Anyone coming up with a local source will be a HERO  🏅

Well Amazon is pretty quick. That's where I got mine. Locally:

San Diego Seal, Inc.
7635 Ronson Road.
San Diego, CA 92111

I used them when I was still working but not in quite awhile. Don't know what their policy is for minimum purchase\retail?

Orings:

2-011 - oring on the insert (fuel ijector) side of the quick connect

2-015  - seals head of banjo bolt to 90 degree fitting]
13mm ID x 2.5mm  - Wall [seals 90 degree fitting to tank surface][Works with stock straight nipple as well]
6mm ID x 2mm  - Wall [seals end of banjo bolt to outlet of fuel pump]
21mm x 3mm - Fuel pump retaining nut

Meanwhile back on the subject of intank filters I found this one that looks promising.

Golan Mini Filter

image.png.405568c99510dceeb95d88c068740004.png

https://golanproducts.com/product/mini-fuel-filter/

10 micron. Large SS cleanable element. Appears to similar in length to the Mahle though perhaps just a bit larger in diameter. Golan known for high quality mil spec and aerospace filters. And made in the USA.

$57 on Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/Golan-Inc-Peak-Filter-60-312C/dp/B00CAYC886/ref=pd_sbs_263_t_0/140-8673100-4078228?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00CAYC886&pd_rd_r=1932e71f-6aa3-4a73-afae-336b7aa605eb&pd_rd_w=rmIaS&pd_rd_wg=AmUqs&pf_rd_p=5cfcfe89-300f-47d2-b1ad-a4e27203a02a&pf_rd_r=BHF8GMNX29YDK3NHNXJ7&psc=1&refRID=BHF8GMNX29YDK3NHNXJ7

Why would you prefer a $57 10 micron over a $14 10 micron?

I'll let you know once I have the $14 one in hand next week. There is a question if  it will seal properly to the hoses in the tank. According to Earl's it's designed to work with their Vapor Guard hose. Also the filter media in the Golan has a much larger surface area so possibly more capacity?

I'll be watching.

Certainly the Golan has significant cool factor- looks like a nice piece of kit. One would think 5/16 is the same as 5/16- people have been substituting the NAPA filter for years. One of my concerns would be the coating on the Earl's- is it paint, powder coat or anodized?
