Christmas Recovery Dec 2018

Recommended Posts

Low 60s with a good wind at times. Ground is pretty well dried out.  Good showing at breakfast time; New bro Kyle. old bro Alan with Homer rolling in for the saddle up. Jim, Paul, Van, Dave and Mark all contributed to the catch up conversation.  Alas, we eventually got around to rinding the bikes with some riders finishing their final Recluse oil adjustment. With me maintaining my usual check list pace, there was sufficient time to ride out to Mark's place for a touch of that fabulous 10/60 weight!

Managing a full 10 minutes from the trucks and yards from the pavement we had our first and luckily only flat of the day. With Mark assisting the unfortunate one, the remaining 6 had to make a choice: stand around and watch Or head for the nearish sand hills and rivers. We returned just as the tire team were wrapping up. That 21 inch tube did not seem to affect the excellent skill display of the Black Bike rider. Of course he had the advantage of the 10/60 weight.

Sending the group off to the Sand mumble, mumble,,,, Bagstr finished final ride prep in the Sweep position. Lo, turns out there are several Sand options in the desert. Lucky for radios!  After checking the Sand Hills, I found my way to the Sand River and we merrily were finally on our way. As I rarely force myself to ride covered in dust ( copy right protection applies ), I  had several great views of the men of action spread out on the undulating trail. A strong side wind kept them close together making it a wonder to behold.

All's well with good pace and displays of skill until a 4 inch curb caught a KTM 500 out beyond it's capability. Man down, twisted knee, bummer.. First responders move into action and check out the KTM. Luckily no serious scratches. Road carefully up to the Salton Seaway, were-upon two of our bravest escorted the injured on the road to help load the truck.

Having learned nothing from the mishap, the remaining finished the ride on Truckhaven and Inspiration trails. JIm even showed us a unique way through the sand hills back to the landfill pavement.

Unfortunately all the pouring establishments were slammed so most of us headed up the canyons. Your experience may have varied.

We rolled out only to face millions of $$ of rolling stock crowding and squeezing through the canyons headed for their Christmas Recovery.

They were all big bikes (500s + one 350 I think) except for mine (310).  I was still able to keep up with them despite the CC handicap; well except on the highway where my close ratio gearbox put me at a disadvantage.

All said, a great day out in the desert.  I miss these rides being a working stiff again.

Thanks for the ride, Bagstr

Excellent ride guys. Mucho fun. Kyle, rest up, apply ice, and drink plenty of "fluids".

I had heard that Carmelita's was of limits for SDAR personnel. We disregarded orders, dodged the MP's, and sneaked in for a cold beer and a taco after the ride. They weren't real crowded, the tacos were hot, (so were the women) and the beer was cold.

Where can I get some of that 60 weight oil? Man, I've never seen any one ride that fast.

It improves the handling 100%, too.

Like I said in the other thread, it was nice meeting you all!  I had a blast!  My knee is fine.  Nothing on the X-ray.  Just got a sweet brace and some pain meds.  Injury is just an excuse to service my suspension.

Sure happy to hear all is well Kyle! If within your budget, may I recommend a steering stabilizer; they provide a little more rider reaction time to those pesky sand wash ridges.

Kyle,  Good job editing and thanks for sharing.  It really is hard to capture the full experience of moving across the ocean of sand and loose gravel. The camera works hard to record the full frame of the experience. Riding along from  the safety of the camera you would never realize the slippery, soft, hard and wondering nature of the trail. The sense of risk is eliminated. Early in the clip Van is riding ahead and that shows the smooth nature of how the bikes absorb all the punishment of the irregular trail

Well Kyle, Almost all the punishment eh.

Update. My knee is feeling a bit better and I got my suspension back from George at Suspension 101.  Hopefully I'll be ready to rip in a week or two.
