97xr400r 122 Posted April 4, 2019 Inflated Beetle (Cysteodemus armatus) Recently noticed this little critter in California deserts Yellow/green and a white colored type. The first one startled me, they have a rattle sound to them when they walk. It looked and sounded poisonous... my instincts guided me well. You don't want to play with these things, they can secret hemolymph which can cause serious blistering of the skin.

Wierdrider 187 Posted September 27, 2019 A guy I know asked me if I knew anything about the ranch on Nate Harrison grade the other day. That led to wondering about Nate Harrison? Wierdrider 187 Posted October 8, 2019 I just read a review on google maps, " pay $10 at ranger station and drive on up ". That would be fun👍
Uncle Champ 116 Posted October 9, 2019 Hmmmmm, years ago we used to go up there in firetrucks, then a few years ago the indian tribe said no go, then I heard you could pay and go, street legal only. Could be a fun trial.
MacDuncan 131 Posted October 10, 2019 Hmmm, last time I tried to get there on my moto, I passed Henshaw at sunrise, and my vstrom started beeping and flashing warning lights like crazy. Heck, that is when I learned that my bike had "icy Road" warning settings. Heck, it was only 26 degress. But when I turned at Warner and headed towards Eagle rock, and I was blessed with the moment of sunrise hitting the rock formation - wow, (as the formation primarily faces east) I then continued on that road and I passed a tiny beat up booth with a bunch of cameras that implied that I should pay the attendant. I would have been happy to pay on my way out if open ( I didn't see a drop box). I wandered around on indian land, and I looked out of place, but all the gates I found were locked. I thought I would try another day since I like wearing my "Peak bagger" badge on occasion. Never got back there, but would like to say I've been to the tallest peak in the county. Maybe you have to prepay at a ranger station?? Thanks Weirdrider. I will look into it. This pic doesn't do it justice, but you may get the general idea.
Wierdrider 187 Posted October 10, 2019 Bad news! I just got off the phone with the tribal office, they said that road is too badly damaged to be open at all, besides hiking up the 7 miles. They also said they would not even let any motorcycles into the reservation this weekend because of fire danger.

Back in the 80s, i went jeeping with a guy out there. I wondered why I didn't see any motorcycles on these beautiful trails. The guy I was with at the time, told me that motorcycles were not allowed...not even street legal ones.
kato 53 Posted November 10, 2019 "On June 10, 1885, we moved out to Alpine from Old Town, where we had stayed temporarily after our arrival from Missouri. My mother’s oldest brother, H.J. Whitney, had a general merchandise store and the post office at Alpine and my brother, Willis J. Hurd, was in partnership with him. Whitney & Hurd had feed barns also, for the teams that stopped up and down between the Stonewall Mine and San Diego. There was a road from Alpine to the mine that went over Viejas Mountains through Descanso, right to the Stonewall, which they now call Cuyamaca" ... https://sandiegohistory.org/journal/1958/april/stonewall-3/

97xr400r 122 Posted March 10, 2021 I know I'm preaching to the choir, but it's always a good reminder. The places are special and not always protected 100s of feet up a cliff.
