Fire in Jamul

Recommended Posts

I was on a street ride today and took the 94 east and saw a big smoke header on the horizon as I got near Jamul.  I was expecting the road to be shut down earlier, but I was able to ride past the new Hollywood monstrosity of a casino to Honey Springs Road and Otay Lakes Road.  I got to see the fire up close as it burned over the ridge heading west/southwest towards Otay Lakes Road.  I stayed around for about a half hour.  I couldn't see how far south it went, but it was quite the airshow going on.

I am getting old and that bike hurts after an hour.  I am in denial of reality.

At least you can last a whole hour.  I had to buy something more civilized than a track style bike, or else I wouldn't be comfortable for more than about 5 minutes.

I was hoping the casino would burn down.  Mikey doesn't like it.

I can't imagine having to battle that fire in the heat we had

Thanks for posting what a shame. I know the blm and border patrol have been trying to shut down this side of shooting area for years.

Fawking idiots. It goes against common sense to be shooting in tall grass, during high temps and Santa Winds. Idiots.

Last year, Mikey777 and I went to go shooting out on some BLM land. When we got there, the conditions were similar to the conditions these guys were shooting in. We discussed it and came to the conclusion that it wasn't safe to shoot so we didn't.

Idiots.  Go 10 minutes down the road to South Bay Rod & Gun Club and shoot safely.

Couple years ago i talke to ranger and he said 1 of the 3 fires that year was a navy chief who stole tracer rounds and caused a small fire.

Absolutely correct, recreational target shooting with steel ammo is the # one cause of wildfire in San Diego county. It was pretty warm out there Saturday.

The sad part is, we used to be allowed to ride there, A fire was started and it closed. Then they only allowed foot traffic and soon after shooters. Now another fire, I am sure it will be closed for a long time to come.

From the photo it looked like they were just hitting the edge to keep the embers down, but you're right they put it completely out.  Total 'tards if they are putting out your backfire. You don't leave unburned fuel between your blackline and fire front unless it is way inside the line.

From Hollenbeck Canyon parking lotIMG_1498.JPG I talked to a couple today who had been evacuated, they said that it took about one hour for the fire to get to Pio Pico IMG_1500.JPG this is on Otay Lakes Road at the ecological preserve gate IMG_1504.JPGIMG_1506.JPG

Thanks for the pictures Jim. All that lush green foliage from the winter rains turned to tall dead grass in a hurry! I am a little concerned.....

I have also noticed way more reptiles out. I have seen two different snakes in Mission Valley near my work! Never have seen them here before.

It went through fast, not the taking out all the bushes or trees. It jumped the road and burned just a bit near the last two photos.
