Bureau of Land Management postpones all RAC meetings until September

Interior Secretary Zinke calls for review of councils' charters

U.S. Interior Secretary Zinke has ordered a blanket postponement of Bureau of Land Management Resource Advisory Council meetings until September.

Our conversations with BLM staff in Washington, D.C., and field offices suggest that the Secretary's desire to review individual councils' charters was behind the postponements.

Like those administered by the U.S. Forest Service, BLM Resource Advisory Councils have a documented ability to influence and guide agency priorities. The volunteers on these councils can help identify projects that may not seem, on the surface, to be related to off-highway vehicles, yet can have a direct effect on riding areas. For example, discussion of a timber harvest project may not fully consider its effect on existing OHV opportunities.

We have long stressed the importance of AMA members being involved in their local RACs,

RAC coordinators in BLM field offices were notified of the postponement by email on April 26 with little time to notify individual council members about meetings that were scheduled near or even before the decision date.

The AMA has contacted Zinke's office to offer its expertise during this review.

For more information contact the AMA at grassroots@amacycle.org.

If you have been involved in a BLM or USFS RAC or intend to become involved in the future, thank you.

Despite this temporary interruption, we continue to feel that it is very important that AMA members have a place on these councils and any others that deal with public land management.

Now more than ever, it is crucial that you and your riding friends become members of the AMA to help protect our riding freedoms. More members mean more clout against the opponents of motorcycling. That support will help fight for your rights - on the road, trail and racetrack and in the halls of government.

Join the AMA at americanmotorcyclist.com.

If you are an AMA member, encourage your friends to join by telling them about the many AMA benefits you appreciate and the role the AMA plays in promoting the motorcycle lifestyle and protecting the future of motorcycling.
