What's the chance you could ride tomorrow, Saturday (single day)

Craigslist connection. He said he was on ADVrider, but I didn't ask him about SDAR.

What time in Tecate? Are you still considering two days?

I might be down. Just picked up a Yamaha that I want to shake out.

Where do you want to go?

That's my bike!  Will, I wouldn't take the bike to Baja.  There are a couple things I didn't tell you about it...  I didn't know you we're an SDAR member.

JK!   WIsh I could join you guys.  You are going to have a great time.

Maybe Goofy Footer will do one. I only took three pictures the whole trip.

This ride idea was a late spur of the moment idea hatched approximately 2pm on a Friday with less than 24hr departure time.  One rider with a whopping ONE ride in the past 18 months and the other rider on a new bike with 9 year old OEM tires and new to dirtbikes in Baja.

2 Yamaha's - Blue Crew

Day 1  -  approx 150 miles total.  80 from the border to gas/lunch.  40ish to next gas and 30 more to dinner/the hostel

Started off the wrong foot - a flat front tire and broken boot.  Luckily there was a mechanical lift and compressed air on scene which aided the tube change.  The soles of one rider's bootS (plural) were starting to come off the toe.  Some Goop adhesive and multiple wraps of Gorilla Tape seemed to do the trick.

Pre-border crossing ritual - ice cream sandwhich (and this time a monster energy)

IMG_8011.JPG

There is still a good amount of water in Baja.  Random ponds about

IMG_8015.JPG

This fly snuck under my shirt while riding and bit / stung me about 10 times

IMG_8023.JPG

Normal lunch stop.  Asada (beef carne asada) and adobado (seasoned pork) tacos

IMG_8025.JPG

Current gas prices peso/liter

IMG_8028.JPG

On the trail - showing 434 Baja miles so far on this ride and Baja in January

Wide open trails

Descending the hill

At the bottom near the rancho

IMG_8052.JPG

Stopped to see a snake on the trail and was rewarded with green Baja

Gas stop

Pacific Views

IMG_8069.JPG

Evidence that WilliamArcher actually took a picture.  From this point: to the left is the fun downhill, to the right is the easy downhill

IMG_8074.JPG

"Long Beach"

IMG_8079.JPG

Made it in time for happy hour and dinner.  The hostel was packed with families for the holiday and an extra large fishing group.  Luckily we scored a room when some fishermen decided to go to Ensenada.

That's all for Day 1

Oh no that fly is a green bottle egg layer fly, " Lucilia Caeser", honest to god.

I was just going to screw with you but I made up the green bottle fly name and then goggled it, your screwed. Don't goggle it. I'm sure you're fine.

Feeling squirmy yet?

What are friends for anyway...  :)

Day 2:  234 miles.  185-190 Dirt

Made before our eyes

IMG_8108.JPG

I believe these qualify as "cage free" eggs

IMG_8109.JPG

Coastal cruising.  Nice cool morning temps along the beach

IMG_8111.JPG

More evidence of water in Northern Baja.  This is typically a dry valley.

IMG_8112.JPG

Again

IMG_8123.JPG

This long winding road was in surprisingly good condition.  It felt as if there were less washboarding

IMG_8126.JPG

Refreshing aloe drink as the inland temps rose

IMG_8130.JPG

Did some off gps exploring looking for El Mano Pass / The Summit.  Got a good lead but decided to turn around as we were going against our intended route and it was already afternoon.  There is too much to explore in Baja for a simple weekend tripIMG_8133.JPG

Sturdy gate

IMG_8134.JPG

Took a break under the trees at the Caselli Monument

IMG_8135.JPG

Another rattler in the trail.  It's the season

IMG_8141.JPG

Another Flat!  2nd of the trip.  The tube was fresh but was purchased at a Harley style store and was "ribbed"?  Made it difficult for WilliamArcher to patch it.  I was skeptical but it held air the whole way home.  Note that he did not take the front wheel off the bike for the tube repair.

IMG_8143.JPG

More green and water heading north through the pine forest

IMG_8149.JPG

Dana's Monument

IMG_8150.JPG

After gas and great food at Ramonas we headed north to the Laguna.  WilliamArcher scored some free carne as the family was grilling and celebrating the holiday.  We stayed and chatted a bunch.  Great people and very happy to have gas available there.

IMG_8152.JPG

More Laguna

IMG_8154.JPG

Look for irony

IMG_8155.JPG

Last stop pre-border tacos.  Carne on the grill

IMG_8156.JPG

Adobado tacos.  The restaurant was Packed with families

IMG_8157.JPG

385 total miles for the 2 day trip.  Hostel plus food & drinks came out to ~$50.  Gas, tacos, 1 tube and one 1 repair were the only other costs.  Catch you on the next one!

What's the ETA on that built for Baja beast?

Awesome

BP have you ridden south of the border?  The 570 would do great down there

I've talked with Reximus about this idea but I'd be interested in trucking south a bit (Santo Tomas / Erendira / even further) and doing a ride starting from south of Ensenada.  That way, you can spend more daylight hours riding the coast (cooler temps in summer) vs slabbing to Ensenada or using up a solid half-day/three-quarter day to get to the coast via dirt.  Major factor here is the return border wait but at least that's during the night hours.  If the truck was Sentri that'd be epic

Taken 570 once on kugs lobster ride. Agree 570 is made for that stuff. use to go to tecate on huge private ranch 3k acres and laguna area tons right after high school but was in trucks and quads. Agree would definitely rather truck there that take almost whole day, tecate crossing has been good recently or isnt there a seperate line in otay for passport holders and citizens
