Soboba Invitational Trail Ride

Recommended Posts

I just got an invite for this Sunday.

Looks like a great, fun and challenging ride.

Who here has done it?

Tell me about it.

Did it 10 years in a row, every year is different depending on the weather. I've seen snow, rain, and dust but always too many bikes crammed into tight trails.

I was signed up 2 years ago then I researched more and basically they allow too many people in and I talked to 2 guys who did it multiple times they said hour plus waits at hill climbs, cancelled  my signup after that

Ky doesn't mind parking his wheel chair at the bottom of a good hill climb.

it makes for better traction if the hill climbs are littered with bikes.

just aim for thier knobby tires.

go for it . Dont let anyone let anyone deter you .

Then  invite me next year .

Ken,

Just show up and do the second loop, most folks (oh about 800 or so) will have quit by then and the second loop is better anyway (more sporting).

Truth is I only did one time and it was after a rain under absolutely perfect conditions with a perfect machine KTM250EXC.  I only did loop 1 and was tired in mind and body from stopping and getting hung up from (sorry) folks with lesser skill levels causing bottle necks and digging deep trenches in the trail, oh and not letting me pass. There were long slow guy at the front conga lines that just ruined the fun factor and destroyed drive and momentum. All that negative stuff, that I bailed and never did it again.

The trail system is epic and with our wet season it will be excellent. It is a bucket list item for sure and I may change my thoughts If just to do the second AA loop.

Kenny,  For some of our hard ride "invite" rides you don't see more that a limit of 75 riders, by lunch at least 1/2 of them are dirt roading it back to the ranch for beer, food and bench riding with a usual 1/3 (25 guys) of riders finish rate. I think this was the original intent of this "invite" ride, but the lore of $ has made it very porky.

The second loop ride thing comes from one of our crew that has done the ride that  way before and says it was the best way to go.

you don't really need an invite. You just print the entry form off their page and send it in with a check. I was gonna do it but decided not to because funds are tight and I have a race the day before. And hearing about how much traffic there would be kind of deterred me as well, but all my buddies said they had a blast last year and are going again this year.

They are even allowing limited post entry. Just show up at the gate with flyer and $$ and you're in.

I got the invite from a friend and one of their crew can't go. It's already paid.

Im going to go and have fun regardless. I always do. Even if it's just for the "Been there, done that experience ."

Ill be bringing my rain gear.

I've done it a few times. If you line up early early early the bottle necks aren't so bad. So get there early. Did I mention early being the key? It is a unique event. Cool single track. I never did do the second loop, but went home happy anyway. Some people stay at the casino nearby the night before so they can get there early. I also remember the tacos being really good too.

Thanks. Getting there at 6. Riding with a crew that's been there.

I did my first Soboba about 5 years ago. I heard the horror stories and passed it up for a few years before a crew wanted to ride it and asked me to join them.

I admit seeing 700-800 bikes lined up at the start was intimidating but once out on the trails it wasn't bad and I had a blast. There were a few bottlenecks but i've wanted to do it every year since. With work and whatever I've only been 2x since and each year was different trails and probably half the riders.

The racer types have been at races that weekend and the Desert Dash is also this weekend. The year that had a huge turnout didn't have any races to conflict with the schedule.

I might show up for the ride. I've printed my entry and have the cash ready. I'm just unsure if I want to ride in the rain all day. Last time I went it poured all afternoon.

Well Ken. I was hoping to ride with you but I'm stepping back for this year. I promise you'll have a blast and we'll ride it next year.

The weather looks like it should be good. Some rain overnight and a 20% chance all day.

With the ground saturated there should be way less bottlenecks because riders will be getting traction in the deep sand. AND, no dust!
