On my way up 395 in the Eastern Sierra, I had to stop at Virginia Lakes and try to get some good photos as a tribute to my last boy Cody the Codemeister...I found the same rocks Cody posed on a few years ago, and Doc the Docmeister posed there for me this time. From memory, I tried to get shots as close as I could to the originals....here we go...

From Virginia Lakes, I remembered a cool dirt road I did thru Dundeberg Meadows to Brideport, a few years ago...so I had to do it again, and I'm glad I did...great scenery.

Headed over the Sierra Nevada mountains to see my friends Terry and Pam for the night, in Grass Valley...then next day I had to go to see my sidecar builder in Chico.

Next day, Terry took me to meet 3 other riders and we took off from Grass Valley on dirt roads thru some old mining towns, on our way to Boomtown, Nevada. This was the first long day of mainly dirt riding with the rig....the scenery was....well....Excellent !

We passed an old Hydraulic Mining area where you can see the remnants of where they blasted away the hillsides in search of gold using the old water cannons called "Monitors".

The Sierra Buttes....

20161008_115429-L.jpg

I was having a great time riding the rig in the dirt, starting to stand up on the pegs, getting comfortable handling the beast on all kinds of dirt roads. At one point, on an off-camber trail the hack caught a rock and jarred the rig pretty good and my foot slipped off the pegs and bent backwards under the bike....ouch...but it didn't feel too bad so I kept going. Later, at a quickie break, my foot was starting to bother me a little more, but still not too bad.

Here's all the boyz....

20161008_124038-L.jpg

20161008_124055-L.jpg

Before lunch, there was another dirt section which ended up being rutted from previous rains, and then it turned really rocky....oh boy, I knew I would be far behind the group now, since the going was real slow with the beast going thru the rocky sections...not loose rocks, which I can carry more speed over, but rocks imbedded into the hard packed dirt, so I had to slowly pick my way over all the rocks.

Getting close to lunch....

At lunch, my foot was getting much worse...by the time I finished eating, I couldn't walk on it. I told Terry that I'd be taking pavement the rest of the afternoon to Boomtown, I'd see them there. I was going to camp or try to find my own motel because the Casino was booked, but John Johnson said I shouldn't be riding around looking for a room when my foot was messed up, so he offered to share his room since it had 2 beds...that was a relief, thanks John !

When I got to the Casino, they were all there. I couldn't put weight on my foot, so asked if they could check to see if Casino had a wheelchair....luckily they did. I was hoping my foot wasn't broken.

I was the GIMP for the night.

Doc attacking me in the wheelchair the next morning.

20161009_082912-L.jpg

My foot was better, I could at least gimp around on it, but I had to take pavement back to Grass Valley, while the other guys had a full day of dirt riding ahead of them. As I went over the mountain pass, I stopped at this overlook and met this cool guy....songwriter and guitar player, traveling around the country writing songs and playing in different cities...he  sounded really good. I must've sat at this overlook for almost 2 hours....I layed down in the pine needles to rest, Doc was running around having fun, and we met lots of people who came over to talk...like I said before, the rig with Doc in it draws a lot of attention. Funny, one guy saw the rig and says "So what's your story"...I had to share it with him.

My foot was getting better as the day went on.

That's another one of the Hydraulic Mines down below in the distance...

20161009_142055-L.jpg

By the time Terry got home in Grass Valley, I was sitting in the driveway drinking a cold one....Terry joined me outside to relax after his long ride.

20161009_170036-L.jpg

Mmmmm......

20161009_170103-L.jpg

My foot was feeling a lot better, but I was going to go in the next day for X-Rays, to make sure nothing was fractured or torn.

I stayed another night with Terry and Pam, but Pam had one condition...she wanted me to bring Doc and the rig to the nursing home where she works. I thought that was a great idea. I went to a walk-in Urgent Care Center and got X-rays taken of my foot...I was so thankful there were no breaks or fractures, just a severe sprain, which eventually went away in a few days.

Later in the day, I went to the nursing home and much to my surprise, there were a bunch of folks waiting to meet us. Doc had his first experience meeting elderly folks at a nursing home and he did great. I was very proud of him, since I want to certify him as an official Therapy Dog, like my last dog was, and visit kid's homes, nursing homes and hospitals as I travel around, and also raise awareness of the benefits of Therapy Dogs.

A couple of folks wanted to sit on my bike, so Pam and I helped them on and off. The grins on their faces speak for themselves !

I think this woman wanted to hop on the back and go for a ride with him !

20161010_152220-L.jpg

This woman had a lot of spark and personality....I asked her, "so, did you used to ride yourself or ride on the back with someone"?  She sighed, "unfortunately not"....ohhh.

20161010_152735-L.jpg

20161010_152749-L.jpg

I think this gentleman, deep down inside really wanted to sit on the bike too.

20161010_152942-L.jpg

This was a very touching moment for us...the expression on this woman's face says it all.

20161010_153925-L.jpg

20161010_153929-L.jpg

Doc was slightly distracted, because he knew there was a kitty inside.

20161010_153946-L.jpg

Doc did great...I was a bit surprised since he doesn't have a long attention span sometimes, but he's getting much better with people lately as he matures.

That evening, I went to see another friend in Grass Valley, who is best friends with Terry. I met both Terry and Dennis on the 6 Days of Northern California Dualsport Ride in 1999, put on by Team Dual Dogs...it was a seriously epic ride. We became good friends and we also rode the Trans America Trail in 2008.

Here are some cool pix of Dennis's man cave...he used to compete in Enduros for many years, and his 2 sons ride also...they entered the Baja 1000 on a team, and one son also competed in the infamously tough ISDE.

Later, at dinner with Terry and Pam, the cute waitress had a heavy accent...I always ask people where they're from....she was from Russia. I told her we'd be riding our rig across     Siberia eventually....she found that very interesting....She was a sweetheart.

After Grass Valley, I headed back up to Boxer Metal in Chico, for some additional modifications and upgrades to the rig, just minor stuff. At Chris's shop, I was out in the alley when these 2 guys in a van pulled up...they asked about old bikes and where to find them in the area...I had no clue so told them to talk to Chris. They came inside and we ended up talking for quite awhile and drinking beers. Bruce and Ralph from England, here looking to buy old used bikes to ship back there. Chris hooked them up with 1 of his friends and they ended up buying 2 Harleys. I contacted a few people I knew and asked if anyone had bikes for sale, but they were on a time crunch and were leaving in a few days. They were really cool blokes...I got their contact info for when I go to England I the future.

20161011_164503-L.jpg

As we worked in the shop, Doc took a nap in the hack...I'd say he has become quite comfortable with his new home....his domain.

20161013_022641-L.jpg

After finishing up at Boxer Metal, next day I was headed east to try to make it to the Flying Monkey Adventure Rally in Utah in a couple of days.

I got a little tired while riding (Chris and I hung out until 3am the night before), so stopped at this lake to take a little nap on the shore...life is rough, when you don't have to be at any particular destination at any time...

20161013_133642-L.jpg

20161013_133712-L.jpg

After my power nap, we headed back east over the Sierra towards Lake Tahoe and stopped in Truckee. When I let Doc out of the hack, he was shaking and had to go really bad...poor guy had really bad diarrhea a bunch of times, so after it stopped, I ate dinner quickly and decided I needed to get a room, didn't care how much it cost, since he wasn't  feeling good...paid $120 for a nice room at The Inn at Truckee. Weather forecast was bad for the next few days anyway.

Next day, woke up to rain and the forecast for Nevada was heavy winds and heavy rain. I decided to stay in Truckee another night, let Doc recuperate and make sure he was feeling good. We lounged around the motel room all day and watched TV.

20161014_125101-L.jpg

The next day it cleared up a bit...here's a rainbow over the mountains. But, the rain was quickly moving in again. I realized I would not be heading towards Utah at this time, due to same forecast in Nevada.

20161015_075730-L.jpg

I called Terry and Pam in Grass Valley and asked them if it was raining over the mountains...she said yes. I didn't really want to be stuck in Truckee again...Pam said, "Well come stay with us again". So I loaded up the rig and rode over the Sierra west again in the heavy rain. At least this was a good test for the canopy on the hack...it stayed pretty dry in there with just some minor leakage which is expected.

20161015_134621-L.jpg

20161015_134642-L.jpg

I stayed with Terry and Pam another night....then forecast was finally better so I started to head north. I was passing thru Chico once again, so I stopped to say hi to Chris and          Rebecca one more time, then went for dinner at Sierra Nevada Brewery.

20161017_202144-L.jpg

A delicious "Estate Ale" with dinner.

20161017_203745-L.jpg

Next morning, I started across on Hwy 36...140 miles of twisties, motorcycling bliss and Zen moments with great scenery...over the mountains towards the coast, with sweepers, tight corners, decreasing radius corners, one lane narrow and also roller coaster sections. One of THE BEST motorcycling roads in California !!

20161018_145029-L.jpg

The mountains in the distance got some fresh snow from the multiple heavy rain storms the last few days.

Towards the end of Hwy 36 as it drops down towards the coast, you pass thru the Redwood forests....just gorgeous !

20161018_174637-L.jpg

I stopped in Eureka for the night. As I was having my dinner, a woman sitting in one of the booths walked up and dropped a napkin on my table and walked away. Funny, she thought I was cute and wrote her number on the napkin and said to call "only if I'm single". I ended up texting her, then we talked on the phone and we're friends on FB now. She's a pretty cool lady and also rides....what a coincidence. Seems I have another new friend....cool !

On the way out of Eureka, I passed this place and had to turnaround and check it out...glad I did. A true motorcycle enthusiasts café. Funny, a couple friends and I talked years ago about opening up a bar similar to this, but it never happened.

I had to get me an Iced Tea and Cinnabon to hang out for awhile....met a few people to talk to, good time.

I stayed in Crescent City that night....next day, continued up Hwy 101 and saw a sign for "Fort Dick"...I figured, "let's go find out what this town is about and if there really was a fort there". I rode around looking for a Fort, but couldn't find one. So I stopped at the Fort Dick Market, got some grub...Doc made a buddy with a local dog and I talked to some locals, got some interesting history about Fort Dick and the area.

This was a really small town, and I loved sitting there eating my lunch and then talking to some locals....this guy Jake, we started talking and I asked him about Fort Dick and why the name ?  He elaborated on the history of the area....

I also talked to a guy Art (who didn't want his photo taken).....they both gave me some detailed history on the area.

in the mid to late 1800's, local settlers had some problems with the local Indians. One man built a fence around his home with vertical wooden logs as protection. Whenever the locals had problems with the Indians, they would go to his "Fort" for protection. This continued for awhile, until the locals formed a group who went and massacred the local Indians to     eliminate further problems...sad but true story, and little stories like this are not publicized much.

The 2 locals told me whereabouts the Indian Village was, but I didn't go all the way down there since there was nothing to see....but I did ride down towards the beach and where the local Indian village used to be...

I thought I was in Texas, seeing these Longhorns !

This was real small town America...farming and raising cattle....

Doc enjoyed running around the cow field...I didn't let him get close to the cows to spook them.

Wanted to find the local beach, and so I did....

Lots of ocean mist....and not a soul around except Doc and I, very cool !

The guy Art who I met earlier, also told me that a few miles up the road was a place called Camp Lincoln, an outpost built in 1862 to keep peace between the local tribes and          settlers...about 3 of the buildings still remain.

The local Jake who I met in Fort Dick, told me about the Crescent city memorial to the Brother Jonathan freighter, where many people lost their lives when the freighter ran aground on the jagged rocks....if you're interested, read the plaques...to me, very interesting. The St. George Reef Lighthouse was built as a result of this shipwreck, and it was a marvel of 19th Century engineering and one of the great lighthouses....

I'm back in San Diego for a couple months to prep for Mexico and South America....lots of prep to do.

Also, I'm having the Sidehack modified to run a 2 Wheel drive system with locking hub for the hack using driveshafts and u joints powered off the rear drive of the bike. That will give me piece of mind when the going gets tough and muddy.

It's another major modification but will be well worth it.

Time to catch up a little on this trip report....back in October, we headed north from Crescent City into Oregon. Heading into Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, I met this guy Rick from Crescent City on an old classic, on a 1981 XS1100. We talked for a bit, then I headed into the Redwood Forest on a cool dirt road.

After the Redwoods, I rode up after dark in the rain up the 199 into Oregon to Cave Junction to see my friends Uncle Cameron (co-founder of SDAR) and wife Jessica, who built our San Diego Adventure Riders website (SDAR). I stayed in his airplane hanger loft for a couple nights....

I met Anthony and Melissa from Portland, at a reservoir outside Eugene, and we went up into the local mountains for a photoshoot that was supposed to come out in a motorcycle magazine in February 2017....they took about 267 photos in a couple of hours, action shots and posing shots....unfortunately, Anthony lost all his photos a couple months later when his computer crashed....these are the only photos I have from the shoot....
