Saturday morning around East County and Otay Mountain

Saturday morning the Mrs' and I hopped on our 650GS and went for a morning ride. I was hoping to see if Proctor Valley offered any dirt or gravel fun. I also wanted to find the route where we could exit Otay Mountain Truck Trail to the west. In the past, the end of the road is blocked by a locked gate near the Donovan State Prison, although we've had good luck with Border Patrol Agents opening it for us.

The clockwise loop we took:

The road through Proctor Valley did offer about 4 miles of dirt, gravel, and sections of worn out concrete. Spring seems to have come early in East County and Campo Road offered some great street motorcycling through beautiful green hills and blooming spring flowers.

Just before reaching the turnoff to Otay Mountain Truck Trail I noticed a driver in the opposite lane looking off to his right into a field. As I was thinking "I wonder what he is looking at?" a deer jumped out from the left and ran across the road. It was about 20 yards in front of me and barely cleared the fence to my right. I wish I had the chin mounted Go-Pro on!

On Otay Mountain Truck Trail we ran across two separate mountain bikers, three Border Patrol vehicles, numerous Jack Rabbits, and a Road Runner.

We found the dirt road that provides an escape route to pavement if the Donovan State Prison Road gate is locked:

The dirt road ends just south of the East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility. From there it was an easy ride to the 905 and then I-5.

Although only a half-day, I felt this trip accomplished its goal; we increased our skill, got to explore some new roads, and enjoyed the unexpected spring colors of East County and Otay Mountain.

I have been hassled on otay truck trail area. Near the border.

In otay valley I have not been hassled but others have.

I have seen LEO near otay valley but not gone near enough to talk to them.

We've been on the Otay Mountain Truck Trail three times and have never had a problem with Border Patrol Agents. Most just give us a wave as we ride by. One time an agent opened a locked gate and then talked to us about our bikes for a couple minutes.
