Mammoth Lakes /Crowley Lake area trails?

Recommended Posts

Lots of loops up there for sure.... but anyway to tie any of those into any route to get there on a small bike, from El Cajon to the Mammoth visitor center - somewhere through the sierras, with little hiway? NOTE: besides using the route that puts the bike up a truck ramp - haha.

Maybe,..... 52- 67-warner-anza-10-215-138-58-caliente bodfish-kern-22s05-sacatar? - then the drone up 395 - ouch until some left turn near Bishop to get on dirt again.

Although, funny that it seems that the Lake isabella entry point might be a way to cut-out a bunch of hiway drone, but the exit point to 395 is almost the same latitude as the entry point, so it seems that going through Kennedy meadows has mostly scenic value, but not time shortened and freeway lessened value.... just wondering about a wander given all the Mammoth posts. Thanx.

You can draw a dirt oriented route but I'd bet it's going to take a few Days and will involve some desert/high desert/death valley heat (not to mention some exploration/trails unknown).

A backroads / touring route could be fun (depending on bike/monkey butt) however. No need for I-15 yuck.

I'm up in Mammoth right now. I have a pretty good collection of tracks for the area. If you PM me you're email address I'll send them when I get back home next weekend. Rode to Bodie yesterday. Great ride and the weather was perfect

Thanks Blue-i am actually researching the best GPS out there as i dont have one yet-i know i need one ive just been procrastinating but now the search is on!

In your opinion what is the best unit out there?

Save some money and find a used Garmin 76cx on EBay.........a new Garmin Montana will set you back ~$500

+1

I got a new GPSMap 78 off Ebay for under $150. Works fine, love it. Good ports for hard wiring it to the bike.

I'd take a 76 over a 78 if you can find one......both capable units......78 is newer/flashier but the 76 is a bit more user/dual sport friendly (in my mind)..........though I'm admittedly partial to the 60/76 series......

ive heard good things about Montana 600 series-i know its pricey but im cool with it-however-is it overkill?-too many gadgets for a more minimalist old skool guy like me?-can it be hard wired?

THanks i really appreciate the responses!

I use s Montana and love it. Big, readable screen. Holds lots of tracks and maps - topio. City Nav, etc. I have it hard wired to the bike.. Highly recommend!

Many thanks PdBlue-im sold-im gonna get it-i think Cyco whatever site has the hardwire parts?

Gps city has the Montana 600 for $399. They also carry the ram mount parts and the garmin cradle for the Montana. Great service and prices. What bike are you mounting it on?

I ride with both the Montana and the 60csx on my bike on long rides. The Montana is by far the better unit for me. I can read the larger screen without putting on my readers and the touch screen is so user friendly. I mainly have the 60 for backup and I like to keep the milage and elevation screen up to look at.

Covered in Garmin

after many days of $$$$ and newby frustration things are progressing-finally figuring the Garmin Montana 600 out. I have officially passed the stage where i wanted to throw the thing out the window and kill everything in a hundred yard radius.

Huge thanks to Randy!

The guy dosent know me from Adam, im a newb on this site and he just sends me this cool wiring setup to make this thing work. Plus he takes a cold call and drops more GPS knowledge on my pea brain than i can handle, and offers to hook me up with some maps. I just about have it all working and i couldn't be more grateful, thanks again Randy!

And thanks again to all that chipped in-heading to Mammoth in a few hours-gonna be fun.....

We did the trail that connects Mammoth to June Lake loop. Lot of fun with lots of sand. You end up across the street from the Shell station at 395 and 158. Then from the Shell station you can cross 395 and there are some really nice gravel roads as well as some really sandy ones that follow the pole line. Crater loop is a nice ride. (I think you could ride all the way to Mono Lake from there if you didn't get tired of the sand.)

At the other end of 158 (June Lake loop) there are some cool mountainous rides; mostly good fire roads. Some go almost all the way up to Tioga pass. They begin across 158 from Grant Lake.

There are also dirt routes into Bodie Ghost Town and from there to Bridgeport. Huge, wide open country. (Hay's St. Cafe in Bridgeport serves a mean breakfast.)

Have fun!

Thanks Honda-did the mammoth loop and the june-great recommendation-also went up to Minaret-wow there is a killer little trail that ends where you can see for miles.
