Rugged Radio

Recommended Posts

Rugged has a complete radio set up on sale for $200.00 If you've been on the fence about getting a radio this is a great way to try it out. Ask anyone that uses one and most will say they don't do group rides without one.

I have this exact set up. I haven't even installed it yet but my first impression is that it's worth the price.

Which reminds me. I still need to order another harness from them. During the Sawmill ride the harness decided to fight with a manzanita and lost.

Looking at their website and the cost of the harnesses and what not it looks like you are basically getting the radio for free after paying for the harness, helmet kit, and PTT button.

You can also get the radio's on ebay for very little $$.

My only concern about the Rugged deal is that they say the range is 150 to 174MHz and the radio's on ebay say 136 to 174MHz. However I'm fairly sure they are the same radios.

Yes, it will work.

Badly..,

+1 (or should it be -1?). There's been a lot of experience with these cheapy setups. They have very fragile connections and the wind noise at anything over 5mph renders the sound unaudible. Do yourself a favor and get the RR setup. That said the new RR Baufeng specific harness looks to me to be a bit below their usual quality. I'd pony up for the standard harness if you can afford it. More options and in my experience extremely durable.

And yes the Baufeng that Rugged sells can be had on Amazon for ~$32.

I just picked up the Baufeng radio, antenna, cig charger, hand mic, and RR pig tail to carry as a space / give to a non-radio'd riding partner.

So that's why mine costed so much more... its better quality. That makes me feel better.

The radio is the Baofeng UV5r. Baofeng has put out a few similar models now each with slightly different frequency ranges or antenna the widest range and longest antenna can be picked up from amazon for 35 bucks.

Not a bad package deal. I did have an issue with the helmet set having a bad solder joint, and bad insulation in the knuckle where everything splices.
