The Glowing Header

Recommended Posts

My DR350 header glows in the dark. I understand it indicates a lean condition. Been trying to richen it up, but still glowing. Should I be worried?

Also, now that I have a temp gauge, I'm wondering what is normal vs dangerous. My gauge reads at the spark plug.

Hope you're having a great weekend.

Phil

If it glows during normal riding you probably have a lean condition...too small jet or its sucking extra air in

Could be either

If it glows sitting in the driveway, don't ride it there anymore

My WR, even though jetted well, got hot fast idling (as does the KLR)

Good luck

I wouldn't want to see an air cooled cylinder head (measured at the plug base) get to more than 345-355. 300 degrees F would be OK routinely. YMMV

Thanks Guys. Appreciate the help. I am not experienced, but I'm guessing the jetting does not match the big bore kit, air box mod, and supertrapp exhaust. Runs like crazy, but I worry about longevity.

Head temps do not seem excessive from what I have read.

Thanks again.

Years ago a friend of mine had a Kawasaki that had an exhaust header that glowed red in the daylight.

I checked everything and couldn't find anything wrong but finally asked him when he last changed his oil filter. He replied that he didn't know it had one.

I put in a new oil filter and it cooled down to normal.

No more glowing header.
