5th Annual Troy Meadows Experience

Recommended Posts

Time once again to plan for the annual Troy Meadows Experience.

4 days and 3 nights of mostly trail riding with some trout fishing thrown in, up on the Kern Plateau.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I didn't get to even plan, let alone go on last summer's 4th annual trip (although Woodsie and Eric went twice).

So this summer, I have it all planned and have everything I need to do the trip in style.

I propose to leave at 7 in the morning on Monday, get up there about mid afternoon. Take a shakedown ride and relax for the evening. Ride the next day, ride and fish the next day, etc and leave to go home on Thursday or maybe even Friday. ^_^

It's a 260 mile drive from Escondido.

The camping at Troy Meadows overflow camp is free.

Sometimes the water faucet doesn't work.

There is an outhouse near the front and back entrance to the campground.

Camp fires may or may not be allowed.

Camping is at around 7500 ft elevation. Riding can range up to 9000 ft, so if you don't acclimate well to altitudes, this is probably not the ride for you. Rejetting may be required.

The riding is mostly singletrack with plenty of low intermediate terrain.

There are plenty of two track roads for people who don't like singletrack.

There is no quad riding allowed.

Plated bikes as well as green and red sticker are all okay.

Daytime temps are 70s-80s, nighttime temps are usually in the 40s.

Mosquitoes come out at night.

There are bears in the area.

There are no motels, gas stations and no cell phone service up on the plateau, but there are a couple of market/general stores in the area to get ice and supplies.

So....

Get the camper gussied up....

or your tent trailer....

maybe you just have an RV...,

Sure is quiet out there, except for the crickets.

I guess everybody has plans already....

That and work and July 4th week has the makings of being a zoo up there.

Have fun just the same.

I have never been there before and would love to go, but I have to work that week. I have the following week off, but I think I have a hiking trip going on.

I hate it when the rest of life gets in the way of riding.

It was pretty quiet up there two years ago on the week of July 4th, but if there are lots of people around this year, at least maybe I won't feel so alone. Lucky that I have a nice safe and comfortable rolling hotel to stay in at night.

I won't be able to make plans for later in the summer, so the early part of July is the time for me. I may go on another day though, as some matters have come up that will make it necessary to delay the departure date slightly.

Yeah I love the area but July doesn't work for me but towards the end of August or beginning I might be able to plan it. :coolio:

We are riding Zion July 19, first ride since broken hand in Nov. if all goes well, we can do a Kennedy Meadows trip Aug. or Sept. with you. Mimi wish you could join us in Utah.
