Plans for New Club Event & Other SDAR Stuff

It should be on the cover or home page URL that appears before you go to the forum. If you stay linked to the forum URL, you will have to go to this URLhttps://dualsport-sd.com/

Thank you for the last donation, last night from the person who's screen name I finally figured out from his post in a different thread.😂

What does SDAR mean to you?

I have been with SDAR for 14 years. I joined in 2007 because I always seemed to be riding alone. Back then, there were lots of trail bike riders in the club, and it seemed like somebody was always putting on a "newbie" ride. I went on a lot of great rides, and discovered new routes and places to ride, that I might not have explored for the first time all by myself. I had never been up to Big Bear before, or the Kern Plateau. But I got to have a guided tour of those two places, thanks to members who put on the rides in those areas. Desert Dash was a great event to socialize at, and I have driven the EMT support vehicle on a few occasions, worked sign up, and even did some sweep work, one year. There were a couple of vehicle recoveries, that I participated in too. Lots of old timers seem to have dropped out. Some have quit riding, other's lost interest in the forum over the last few years. Some have sadly, passed on. But I still ride with a few people, like MCtrails and Dirt Diva, Diva's Pit Crew. Heck, I still run into our most infamous banned member, Hammerin' Hammon out on the trails, and we talk about dirt and the old days of the forum. He is still at it, on Hondas, and I read his posts on FB all the time.

Good question. We did discuss this a little bit in the thread where I announced my new position as club president a while back. Some of the cost has been erased as of this point in time, but we still need 66 bucks a month for the server, and unspecified fees for any IT help and updates we need from time to time. And there is a small fee every two years for the domain. Since the donation button has been updated on the "cover" page to the forum, one member has donated 25 dollars, which only 23.72 (or something like that)of that ended up in the coffer. I would like to see the site revamped a bit also. Sort of drab and ho hum looking right n ow. And yes, some day, advertising should follow. Putting all our eggs in one basket by running an annual event doesn't leave the club anything to fall back on, if the event can't be put on, or doesn't attract enough participants to crack the nut.

    Well...it IS the weekend.

That would certainly seem to be logical, and I am in total agreement....but we don't have the money to buy the time needed to get the website back to any semblance of its former glory.

And that's really why I wanted to help run the event....to make enough to keep the website going. But if nobody cares about using the website, then the effort to keep it going is pointless.
  9. I regret that we have made the decision to put the Desert Dash event that would be coming up in February on hold, due to unforeseen circumstances. Hopefully, there will be another, later on....or some smaller rides that we could organize for the club, to help raise some money to support the forum site.

Yeah, that's the main problem. I feel that the FB page drives people away from this website, rather than to it. This website is unique and independent. It falls under no "big tech" social engineering guidelines. People are lazy about social media, and would rather stay over there where they have more anonymity and can be less directly involved. This website is a wealth of club history, adventure stories and tech discussions, all laid out in easily searchable subforums. Facebook pages are more like easily gobbled up junk food.

Okay, I found a place to have supper and a meeting, and it is in Poway. https://www.kaminskisbbq.com/ I need to know how many people will actually be able to show up next Monday, 11/22 for dining at 6, discussion at 7 with Ed Stovin from SDORC.
  12. A timely e-mail notice from our friendly OHV manager, Gabriel Padilla.... "On November Saturday 20 & Sunday 21 the Corral Canyon OHV area will be having the Sagebrush Safari mountain bike race. This event has been held in the past and is resuming again. The event will be using OHV trails and OHV roads; none of these will be restricted. Any and all OHV users will still be able to access the roads and trails per usual. There will be more traffic on those days particularly in the mornings." So you can make an informed decision in advance about whether or not you want to ride there on that weekend.

I need to find a good place for a meeting. I'm researching that right now (like some restaurant, pub or brewery), but if anybody knows of a good spot, feel free to chime in with it.

Hmmm...disappointing that there isn't more enthusiasm shown than this. I thought I'd get at least a few more people here who would be interested in participating either as a volunteer or an entrant.

    Kawasaki Z650RS

Back in 1990, Kawasaki came up with the ZR series motorcycles, that sort of threw back to the older KZs. That reincarnation didn't age too well at the time. I bought a ZR 550 and rode it for many years, but they weren't great sellers. Maybe this round will do better.
  16. Greetings.... all you SDAR members. Just wanted to touch base with everyone here. Some things have changed over the last few months here on the forum. The torch has been passed on to a new site leader here, as Adventure Bum (Mike, ADV Bum) has had other things going on in his life lately, and has decided to focus on those things that are most near and important to him. So I have accepted the offer to run the website, as of yesterday. I hope that with the support of our members, we can keep this local legacy alive and running strong. My background for this task comes from running one abandoned website, and being a global moderator on another local website. I have been with SDAR for 14 years, and have seen a lot of changes over the years, some good, some not so good. With the advent of social media sites, forum style websites have been declining as people favor the ease of going from their page or news feed to a page that caters to and provides to some degree, a convenient alternative to regular forums. However, these pages fail at organizing information in a neat and easily searchable format. So there will always be a need for forum formats for those die hard enthusiasts looking to research for a ride, technical information and other topics. It is important not to let our type of forum fade away. SDAR is unique because it is designed for local people, real people who will probably be seeing one another and riding together, as opposed to large open forums, where a bulk of the members will only see each other on line. We are community, and more than just cyber community. I have been going over some of the upkeep costs of the site, and have found that has become pretty expensive to maintain. I am hoping that we will retain and increase our number of supporting members, and that we can increase our sponsoring advertisers to keep things running smoothly. If anybody has any questions, or needs any help on the site, or also has any helpful tips or information, I will be available.
  17. Thanks for chiming in with your report. I guess between the two groups, we showed trail 4 that our efforts were not to be trifled with.😎
  18. So....it looks like it was a successful event. Special thanks to San Diego 4 Wheeler club for setting up the sign in area and having all kinds of drinks and snacks on hand. There was a large turnout of 4X4s for the event....not so much 2 wheelers. I found Alan already unloaded and getting ready to ride when I rolled in. There were a few other motorcyclists milling around....not sure how many of them signed up to help out. We saw two other riders signed up and they had written in SDAR where the phone # was supposed to go. We did not see them out on the trail, so we don't know where they ended up. If they are reading this, maybe they can chime in with the details of their cleanup efforts. Alan and I decided that we would tackle trail #4. We snipped and sawed from one end to the other over the course of the event. Because of the drought conditions over the past few years, there was less overgrowth than in previous times that I have participated in the trail maintenance days, so we mostly did a lot of light trimming. The day's event wrapped up on time, and Alan decided to do a bit of trail riding afterwards. I felt kind of tired, so I headed for home. Also saw a riding buddy who I used to work with, and chatted with Ed Stovin, who had come up without his 501, and was doing some mountain bike pedaling instead. All in all, it was a good day.
  19. We used to have quite the crew...back in the day, didn't we?
  20. More information to come, as it develops. Will be better weather by then, and a good opportunity for a post work BBQ.
  21. I'll see those of you who are planning to show up tomorrow!
  22. I might join you for some of the trails.
