Discussions at SDAR Club Meeting Tuesday July 20th
DigDug replied to KTMrad's topic in Upcoming Meetings
2 SDBMW seemed like a pretty good 'central' location. I don't know what other shops are in that area, but I'm sure there are other meeting locations. Shops are very gracious though, and it's always fun to look at toys! -

Ok. I finally got around to downloading, sorting through, and posting my pictures. Here are just a few of the better ones.. No words, just pictures! On the way back, I had to go over to Sacramento for work, so I decided to take the long way over and swing through Yosemite. I only had half a day, but still managed to get a few good pictures: -

Thanks for the ride everyone. I had a great time and hope everyone else did too! Somehow we need to do that ride without the stop at Hell's Kitchen. An hour and a half for lunch is pretty excessive. There was a sign on the doorway that summed it all up (I should have gotten a picture) "We guarantee fast service, no matter how long it takes". Eight riders wound up showing up at Carl's. Lots of lurkers on this one! We started off the ride exactly as planned. De Luz road, Tenaja Truck Trail, then up Margarita peak to the top. KLRoger heading up Margarita Peak View from Margarita peak, looking west - the fire station at the top of Camp Pendleton Colt (friend from work) coming down the rocky upper section of Margarita Peak. From there we descended Margarita Peak and rode the twisty roads of South Main Divide Road up to Ortega highway and to Hell's Kitchen for lunch Hell's Kitchen lunch stop. Our 9 riders looked pretty much this way for the entire 1.5 hours From there, 8 of us continued up North Main Divide. Enjoying the views and the road up to Santiago Peak, the antenna farm. Great fun - not as much traffic as I expected for such a nice day! KLRoger coming down to the overlook: The fast guys were there doing a little bike maintenance. Quick tube change. It just won't be an SDAR ride without a flat tire! View from the top. It was a little hazy down below, but it was pretty cool to see the higher parts of Catalina sticking up through the haze. Borrowing a friendly Jeeper's electric pump. Saves a little sweat in the heat of the day. Paul testing the strength of his fancy tow strap. I'll let him explain As well as explain what's happening here: We backtracked down Main Divide and descended Indian Truck trail to the pavement to bail home. Indian Truck Trail below: Thanks again to everyone for coming out. Great group of guys and a great day of riding! Next time I think we need to modify the plan to meet further north (Maybe Lake Elsinore) and just do the dirt sections north of Ortega Highway. -
Big Bike/Easy ride this weekend (Sun, 25 Jul)?
DigDug posted a topic in Informal Local Rides & Who's Going Riding!
Well, I got the Great Pumpkin all running but it's too clean! I'm thinking about taking a big bike ride and poking around the back country. It's been a while since I've done the Fallbrook - Corona ride, so that sounds like one likely option. Weather guessers call for 85-90 degrees in town, hopefully a few degrees cooler up on the mountains. Sunday seems more likely for me right now, but we'll see what happens by then. Anybody interested? --------------------UPDATE 23 Jul, 1:43pm------------------------ Ok, it looks like I've got one other guy from work as well as WingNut here that might be interested, so I'll call it a go so the lurkers can decide. Let's plan on meeting at Carl's Jr in Fallbrook at 8am on Sunday, 25 Jul and riding shortly afterwards. Gas up there and we'll hit DeLuz Rd (fun street, lots of turns) up to Tenaja Truck Trail (dirt), up Margarita Peak (dirt) to the back gate of Pendleton, then back down and over the National Forest Road, past Wildomar OHV area (still closed I think), South Main Divide to Ortega Highway and to Hell's Kitchen for lunch. Depending on pace, we might be a little early for lunch, but their website shows them open all day Saturday. Early is probably good to since they can be a little slow on a busy weekend with the cruiser/sportbike crowd off Ortega Highway. From there hit North Main Divide Road (all dirt) (the National Forest Website shows it open) as far as we feel like it before looping back. You can go all the way into Corona for gas or cut down on a few other side trails as we see how the day goes. I'll be on the 950, so it won't be a blasting pace. The roads are pretty much easy fire-roads, so this is appropriate for big bikes and/or noobs. Great views, and MILES AND MILES of fun roads! Gas up in Fallbrook and the next gas will be when we come down off the mountain after lunch (80-90 miles if we go all the way), but there are bailouts if needed. I'll try and get some GPS tracks cut/pasted and posted before Sunday for people to load. If we do the whole thing into Corona, then back in the dirt, it's an all-day affair (especially for you south county riders that have to get back down there from Fallbrook). Ok, I've done the planning and made the call on date/time.. Who's in??? --------------------UPDATE 24 Jul, 10:00am------------------------ GPS file for the ride is HERE It looks like about 50 miles to lunch at Hell's Kitchen then another 40 over to Corona if we go all the way. There's a gate at the bottom of Skyline TT that's sometimes locked (something about having to buy a key from the Riverside County sheriff's department). If so, we'll have to backtrack about 25 miles to Bedford TT for gas. So if we have riders with less than 115 miles of range (going all the way to the gate, then backtracking), no big deal, we'll just drop on Bedford to get gas rather than risk the gate being closed. See everyone tomorrow! -

If anyone wants (I know it's a bit of a haul if you're coming from south county), we're going to meet up at about 7:30 for breakfast at Carl's before the ride if anyone is interested... -

Come on Don! That's not a transit, it's a sextant! (Trying to get the academic worked up by posting a Wikipedia link! Hey, he tried to get the navigator worked up by calling a sextant a transit!) I actually have one (cheap plastic one I picked up somewhere) in a box somewhere in my garage. It's been years since I've had to use one for real, but they're actually interesting pieces of equipment!

The 450 is getting up over 9,000 miles (hard miles), intake valves were at the edge of adjustment and it's getting hard to start. Time for a top end at least... But that DOES Give me an excuse to throw the 570 kit on it! -

Wishful thinking Let me rephrase.... AT LEAST a top end. I'm actually toying with just taking the motor out and dropping the whole thing off. I don't mind doing a top end, but I don't want to get into the bottom end and I'm afraid it might need it - too many special tools and things for me to screw up! -
Non-Spray Air filter cleaner recommendations
DigDug replied to slagnado's topic in Equipment & Technical Forum
Could be any number of things. Apples to oranges I say. - Were both pre-oiled filters pre-oiled to the same degree? - Did both riders encounter the same amount of dust (Was Brad's friend in the front, or way in the back. Or was Brad stuck to the leader's back tire the entire race, trying to take over the lead?) - Does Brad ride a Big Bore (sucks more air=more dust) and his buddy a smaller bore? - Like Brad already said - Does he ride with a heavy throttle hand, where his buddy finesses it and uses torque more? - Did one rider open their airbox and put fatter jetting in (again more air). - Any other number of differences... far from a scientific study... -

Friday's a work day for me. I've taken too much time off work over the past month already. If we decide on the Fallbrook ride, I'll have to paste some tracks together and see what we get. Off the top of my head, it's about 30/70 (dirt/street) to lunch (with a good chunk of that roughly paved, windy, fun fire roads) and 95/5 (dirt/street) after lunch (unless we wind up running late/getting tired and come back on pavement). You're an animal! I wanted to keep it to one day, plus avoid the costs(motel, etc). I've got a top end to pay for daddy-o! -
Those jumps look like reception issues. Where is the unit located? (i.e. does it have a clear view of the sky or is it in a backpack, or obscured by your body, etc). If you want maximum accuracy, make sure battery saver mode is turned off, and WAAS is on as suggested (yes, it will eat batteries more). I've noticed that distances on the odometer screen can often be different than in the final tracks - probalby due to rounding. You could try pulling the active tracks up in Mapsource and editing out the error spikes to see if the expected mileage is closer - but it doesn't look like 5 miles of jumping to me based on that picture. I don't think "Pedestrian" mode won't help. I'm pretty sure that's just for route calculation and has nothing to do with tracks.

Camping and Hauling

Looks like fun. And great shots, Dave - as always! One think I've always wanted to ask you though - Where did you get your nickname (bagstr) from? -
I haven't seen any at motorcycle shops.. But you might be able to find some RAM mounts at the boating shops. I bought a RAM mount for my 76CSx at Boater's World off Rosecrans. I think I remember reading that they were closing down a few months ago though. The big West Marine further south on Rosecrans might have some stuff too...

Great ride! Miles and miles (yes, literally miles at a pop!) of awesome, tight singletrack. Just when you think it can't get any better, the trail takes a turn and leads you into another section that yanks a grin out of your helmet! It'll be a shame if the man takes it all away from us! Best of luck in the fight. Let us know what else we can do to help. I've got a few good photos to post up when I get back from my conference and into some decent bandwidth to upload. -
Well, I think I finished my first geek project (Crawdaddy, you should be proud!!!). Mickey and I rode all of the trails at Corral Canyon and created tracks for them! I'm not the king of this stuff, so hopefully it turns out. These are all the LEGAL trails from Pine Valley all the way down to the Corral Canyon OHV area - including Spur Meadow and the Espinoza loop. Here's the overview of everything: Forest Service Map: Tracks: Here's the detailed view of just the Corral Canyon area: Forest Service Map: Tracks: In all we had a BLAST! It was fun working our way through every single trail on the map (and coming across a few that weren't Many of which are a BLAST!!! - That is if someone were to ride them). As usual, download the attached "Corral Canyon Trails.txt" then rename it to "Corral Canyon Trails.gdb" so it will open in MapSource. I divided the tracks up into each route on the map. That leaves a total of 16 tracks, and I only had to filter down the Espinosa trail in order to get it under the 500 point maximum. Although it's a little hard to distinguish one trail from another, I color coded them based on published difficulty: Dark Green - Fire Road Green - Easy Blue - Moderate Black - Difficult Let me know what you think??? TRIVIA QUESTION Oh, and by the way, I've seen a few people post here that they've ridden all of the trails in the area. Can anybody tell me where this one is??? Have fun!!! Corral_Canyon_Trails.gdb.txt

I was hoping we could wait until it was officially open to post the track. Status is still open to members and guests only. I thought it was open. According to the Forest Service's Motor Vehicle Use Map : LINK HERE , it's usable. Trail 912. Any idea why it's not open to "the public" yet?
