  1. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will be dry, if it is raining (or even just kinda wet) I'll do it another weekend soon.
  2. I read there could be Quartz and Feldspar a few ridges back from the end of In-Ko-Pa road. I talked to the guy that owns the Dersert View Tower and he said it was private property back there. He did say there was quartz down one of the road on the other side of the freeway. I also read maybe garnet, mica... I's be happy to find anything of modest interest. Just started to start looking, few place down by Blythe I'd like to go to once it cools down. Any suggestions?
  3. I plan on trucking my motorcycle from East County to the Jucumba area early Saturday morning for a easy ride around the area. Leave East County 6am'ish and be back about noon time. I ride mild on an old XT 550, just going to putt around on side roads and a few dirt roads. I do plan on spending some time behind In-Ko-Pa road looking for some rocks and minerals. Maybe stop by the Acorn, MX track, Mc Cain's? I also hope to stop by here too http://dualsport-sd.com/forums/index.php?/topic/20695-jacumba-hamburgershot-dogs/

    Jacumba -hamburgers,hot dogs.

I was thinking about riding around the Acorn, Boulevard, Jacumba, In-Ko-Pa area...this Saturday morning. Besides enjoying the ride I want to stop and poke around for Rocks and Minerals out behind In-Ko-Pa road. Sounds like this might make it all the more fun. Yes details please. I'll try and post my ride information in "INFORMAL Local Rides" in case anyone else is interested.

    PM's not working

I sent you one last week, not sure it you recieved it or not? I did notice that you have to check a box now for it to show (anything you send) in your sent folder.
  8. My Mom has a 3 Lp box set that I would like to get converted to CD or MP3. I don't have a record player any more...so... If any one has the equipment or knows someone let me know. It's really important to her and I would like to get this done as soon as possible, so any help would be very appriciated. The music box set is O Love Is Teasin' - Anglo American Balladry http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:bif1zfh7eh2k
  9. I read this somewhere else, and have also heard that it would only be closed 9am to 3pm daily. Not sure what the deal is, but looks like something to be aware of. SDORC is distributing the following: SR 78 to BE CLOSED–IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED!! The following is forwarded from Sherri Kukla, editor of San Diego Off-Road Magazine. I might add to what she wrote that the alternate route she mentions is not acceptable to many off-roaders with motorhomes and trailers. The next shortest route would be I-8 east to Forrester Rd. north to 86 north to 78 west. Cal Trans has plans to close SR78 from Scissors Crossing to Yaqui Pass beginning this Monday, November 13 for eight weeks. To get to Ocotillo Wells will require a huge detour up San Felipe Road, through Ranchita, onto Montezuma Valley Road and into Borrego Springs, some have estimated an hour long detour. Call them today to POLITELY express your displeasure at closing this road at the busiest time of the off road season. 619-688-2556 or 619-688-6670. They are meeting TODAY (Wednesday the 8th) to decide if they should attempt to reschedule it with the contractor. They said they have only received a few calls and are paying attention to whether people are concerned about this or not. Please call right away to discuss the hardship for thousands of off roaders traveling that path and encourage your friends to call too! If you don't get this in time to call on Wednesday, call anyway, because they need to hear from us. We suggested they wait until after President's Day weekend or even Easter to do this.

    Home Theater

Anyone else enjoy home theater? I've been buying bits and pices here and there, upgrading, have a modest (in relative terms), but very enjoyable system. Nice thing is my wife really was the movie person so it's not something completely frowned upon Panasonic 42" Plasma HDTV (1yr ago) Denon AVR-1400 AV Reciever (7yr ago) Toshiba SD-4800 DVD-CD Player (2 years ago) Polk Audio - Center - Sub - Rear Surrounds (7 years ago) B&W CM-1's (got them last week) These are awsome small speakers, so good I put them up front to replace the Polk's I had there. DVD's I have enjoyed watching recently - Mission Impossible III (a little gritty but pretty good) War Of The Worlds (Same as above - a little gritty but pretty good) Saint Ralph (Fun movie for everyone) Over the Hedge (Fun movie for everyone) Kingdom Of Heaven (Not the best acting, but good story, beautiful visually and nice soundtrack) Men In Black (Have watched it many times, will watch it many more) Neil Finn at West 54th Street (Very good music performance was Crowded House leader) Cold Mountain (Good movie, strong visually and soundtrack) World's Fastest Indian (Great Movie) DVD's I have recently watched (but not really enjoyed) - The Break-Up (Couldn't decide if it wanted to be comedy or drama) A Prairie Home Companion (Like the radio show, movie didn't do it) Looking For Comedy In The Muslim World (Just didn't work in my opinion)

    need some exp advice

Once it starts will it idle, if yes that generally not starter - idle jet issue. You are able to bump start it you state. Charging seems to be working. As bikeslut states first things first check you spark, while you at it throw in a new plug as they are cheap and your getting at it anyway. If I was to venture a semi educated guess, I would say it valve adjustment time. Hard starting is a typical sign of valve(s) needing adjusting as is back firing to a certain degree. Timing used to also play a roll, but these day's it generally spot on and stays that way. Oh one other potential reason for hard starting and bump starting is sucessful is low compression. Low compression can be worn rings\cylinder or again related to valves and timing in the sense that you valves are staying open or closed to long. 1. New spark plug. 2. Test compression. 3. Check valves. 4. Validate timing. I would do those in that order. PS -I would go easy on the starter and battery, not using the them to the point of battery going dead. If it's not starting up after a few (up to 5 or so) short cycles of the starter stop. Wait Try another few (up to 5 or so) cycles again. Laying on the starter and battery that long is not really good for either.

    Maintenance Day

I for one had a great time and would love to do it again. You see I have this problem, I love everything about motorcycles. I love looking at them, working on them, riding them, talking about them and talking about talking about them. I went home all geeked up because I got to do all of that with some good people and there were refreshments. I don’t know many people who ride. Got a good understanding on valve shimming Suzuki’s and some concept of valve shimming on KLR 650’s. Also was able to get some work done on my 1983 XT 550 including – Oil and oil filter change Oil up and install in new air filter Adjust pre-load on rear suspension Correcting choke cable slippage Big thanks to Matt for lending me a hand here and there and also letting me take his KLR 650 for a spin. First ride on a KLR 650, cool. Wish I would have brought my camera, I went for a ride, ncould have done a ride report. SanDiegoLand awarded me what in reality amounted to the booby prize by giving me the poster and sticker that was brought back from the first shim run as I was the only person who drove and would be able to take them home without them getting crumpeled. I had brought my bike in my truck. The Pig Pen award for spilling most (only) oil and gas would have been more like it. Sorry Ken. Nice to meet and BS with SanDiegoKLR650 and XR650l Bum. Ok where’s the name list, I’m afraid I might be starting to screw up names\member Id’s. I was really impressed by 2 Wheels riding spirit, not just his spirited ride to get there, but his attitude towards motorcycles and riding. Thanks again Ken for the hospitality and allowing us to stand around chit chatting, asking questions while you were doing your good work, glad your valve adjustment turned out top notch. I’m ready for another and next time I’ll help out with the refreshments.

    Introduction

Just registered, thought an introduction would be appropriate. As far as dual -sporting, pretty new. In a round about way I decided to buy a 1983 Yamaha XT550 (needing a little work) to throw in the toy hauler when we went camping (non-offroading camping). Thought it would be fun to do a little exploring around Mt Laguna (we generally camp Burnt Rancheria once or twice in the summer) and all, ride the pavement, ride the dirt roads. If we manged to get a trip to Sequoias or Grand Canyon it would be a fun way to get around once there. Got my MC license, but no camping trips this summer I've did a few rides by myself, one was out to Loveland Reservoir from East County (no freeway). The second I trucked it out to Lake Morena Honor Camp and rode to 4 corners and around Corral Canyon, Lake Morena, and Campo. Other than that I cruise around the neighborhood every once in a while mostly. A bit hesitant to get out there much due to age - capability of bike, street skills and riding alone. As far as motorcycle riding, again very limited street, but some dirt experience. Generally make it out to Ocotillo Wells once a month during winter. I ride with my daughter and nephew, met a fella last year and he made a few trips with us. Current off-road bike is XR 400, kids rides quads. I also have a 97 KTM 360 EXC , but have come to prefer the mellower traits of the XR 400. Hit Corral Canyon and McCain's Valley every once in a while on the XR 400. Couple other motorcycle related items. I've taken to tinkering with little Honda singles, 70's and 90's. The other thing is my collection of motorcycle magazines I started when I was young. Started buying motorcycle magazines as a kid (early 70's) when I would ride my bicycle to the Aero Drive-In (El Cajon). Nothing like peddling home on a bike with a big box full of motorcycle magazines. Kept them over the years and have added a few more in the past couple of years. Don't have a current count, but I would guess 1500+, mostly very late 60's to late 70's and then scattered 80's, 90's... Dirt Bike, Motocross Action, Cycle, Cycle Guide, Popular Cycling, Cycle World... I get a lot of enjoyment just grabbing one in the evening and re-reading. Some day I would like to get them all organized and in a spreadsheet or database. After that spreadsheet or db some the info and articles for easy reference. I think there is a wealth of somewhat lost info in a lot of them, also lots of fun and interesting info. Well, that's the long of it. Opportunity presents itself, I would look forward to meeting some of you other local riders. Going to poke around and see if I have any thing to post - contribute to the other sections. Here's a picture of my 83 XT 550. New registration, battery, grips, air filter, brake shoes and tires. Needs a seat cover, fork seals, skid plate would be nice and chasing of a few rattles. Does have a cool huge Acerbis tank and Supertrapp pipe.
  17. Not exactly Dual Sport... but riding related. Anyone remeber the "storm of the year" - "biggest storm we've seen in years"..... "storm watch" all the news hype about the first week March 06? Here's a few pictures. We were headed out to Ocotillo Wells the Friday night it started hitting. No pictures on the way out, it was about 10:30pm, road was deserted, and the snow started, then harder, by the time we hit the little hills on S2 going east the tires were loosing traction, on the little hill's right before you get to the "Log Cabin Bar and Restrant" on S2. Towing about 7500 lbs worth of trailer and bikes, turned down the tunes, told the kids to give me quiet and did about 5mph. So no pictures on the way out, but pictures from the desert and way home were pretty good. Daughter and I love weather, it truley was a trip to remember. We had a lot of fun chasing rain. Sometime we didn't have to chase it, it found us. Little chips and salsa around the fire. Ocotillo Wells - Wolfe Well Rd about 1\2 from Holmes Camp on the way out Sunday morning. Picture taken right at Scissors Crossing (78 and S2) Sunday morning looking west. Snowed a bit on the way home near San Felipe peak on S2. Kind if freaked me out, I had enough snow on the way out. S2 about half way to 79 heading west. Even Dudley's saw a lot of snow. That the top of my trailer, the right side one.

    Maintenance party

I know it's deadline time, but you still doing this? Just registered after lurking for a while. Not quite a real dual-sporter yet, but working on it, current dual-sport bike is learner (83 Yamaha XT550) as are my street skills. Would like to meet some other riders. If I would have been on the ball, the fork seals need replacing, might have been an opprotunity. Have the new seals, new fork oil and a parts diagram. Any way might try and follow up in the a.m. and see if anything is going on.
